Wilderness Redemption Tour
Chapter 66 Accident
Before arriving at Valentine's auction, John shows off his lassoing skills to the two new gang members.
He first took out a piece of hemp rope from the hook on the side of the carriage. After calculating the length, he took out the knife from his waist and cut off three arms' length. Then he skillfully tied a ring with a diameter of about 40 cm at one end.
Then, he held the end of the rope with his left hand, raised his right hand high and shook the ring, and threw it decisively when the time was right.
The thrown lasso accurately caught a sheep at the end of the flock. The trapped sheep was frightened immediately, but it only ran two steps before its neck was tightened by the lasso and it could no longer move at all.
John calmly tied the rope in his hand to the edge of the cart, then picked up the hemp rope under his feet. He repeated this twice, and three sheep that would not run around were born.
Lin Yan had just learned the lasso skill from the system. When he saw John showing off his skills, he suddenly felt his hands itching.
But the destination had not yet been reached, and some sheep still strayed from the main group from time to time, so he had to continue to perform his duties.
After more than an hour of unremitting efforts, the flock of sheep was finally driven into the auction house called "Jacksonworth" in the south of the town of Valentine.
When John put the sheep into the temporary sheepfold at the meeting place, the manager-like man holding the account book pointed at the three sheep tied to the carriage and asked: "What is this..."
"Oh, these are not for sale. I just took them out for a walk."
"..."
It was probably the first time that the manager encountered such a seller. He did not speak for a long time after hearing John's answer.
"Sir." He paused, as if he was organizing his words.
"I think you have some misunderstandings about me. My time is precious, so I won't beat around the bush with people like you." As he spoke, his eyes swept over John, Lin Yan, and Sadie in turn. "The origins of the animals here are all clear. As for the origins of your batch... I won't ask, and you don't need to make it up. 25%, as long as you give me a 25% kickback, I will pretend that I know nothing and help you sell them according to the process."
"What did you say?" Hearing that the other party was going to take a quarter of the income, John, who felt he was being blackmailed, habitually reached for his waist.
The manager-like man was so confident, obviously he was not worried that the group of people in front of him would take action here. Seeing John preparing to draw his gun, not only did the two bodyguards beside him step forward to protect him behind them, but even the guards around the venue surrounded him.
"I have made it very clear just now. Smart people should know what to do." The other party stretched out his hand to push away the bodyguard and said arrogantly.
"15%." Sadie started bargaining.
"20%." Seeing that there was some negotiation, the manager lowered his price appropriately.
"17%." John also joined in.
"18%." The other party is very stingy when it comes to money.
"Okay, deal!" John compromised and shook hands with the other party.
"Come back after the auction, and I'll give you the money then." The deal had been done, and there was no need for him to stay here. After telling John when to come and get the money, the manager turned around and walked into the venue with the two bodyguards behind him.
"According to market prices, each of us can earn at least $200 on this trip." John stretched and walked towards the carriage with the sheep tied to it.
"Since it's an auction, don't they need to give us a receipt or something? What if we ask them for the money and they refuse to acknowledge it?"
To be honest, Lin Yan had only seen the auction transaction method on TV and in novels, but those were all situations at the auction site. He had no idea about the procedures that sellers and merchants should follow before the auction.
John laughed and said, "You don't need to worry about the situation you described, because it is impossible to happen."
He explained: "Auctioneers like them rely on their reputation to do business. If anyone in this industry is reported to have embezzled customers' money or the amount is incorrect, then his career will be over. Don't think that this is just an auction in a small town. The money they handled in that day may be more than all the banks in this state combined."
After John's explanation, Lin Yan suddenly understood. He concluded: "A smart person will not give up long-term interests for the sake of short-term gains."
"Well said!" John praised. "So we don't have to worry about him defaulting on his debts."
The mission had been completed, the meat issue had also been resolved, and the three people boarded the vehicle and headed straight for the last destination - the grocery store.
After entering the room, Lin Yan directly handed over the list written by Pearson to save trouble.
The grocery store owner took one look and immediately realized that this was a big deal.
"I'll prepare these things for you now," he pointed to the door, "You can sit on the bench at the door for a while, or go to the bar next door for a drink."
"Then let's go have a drink." Lin Yan took out his pocket watch and checked the time. "We'll be back in twenty minutes."
After leaving the grocery store, John jokingly said, "Jamie, if it were you, you should pay for this drink today. If it weren't for Mrs. Adler's wise choice, we wouldn't have earned this money at all."
"No problem, order whatever you want to drink today, it's my treat!" Thinking that this matter was going surprisingly smoothly and his original worries were totally unnecessary, Lin Yan felt that he should indeed compensate his companions.
"Then you're welcome." John smiled and pushed open the butterfly swing door of the Smithfield Tavern.
Before the spring door was fully opened, John's smile had already frozen on his face. He stopped, raised his hands, and slowly walked away from the main entrance of the pub.
Lin Yan, who was following behind him, had no idea what was happening ahead. Just when he was wondering why John didn't keep walking, he saw John slowly raise his hands.
Realizing that something was wrong, he suddenly moved sideways and drew his pistol at the same time. Sadie was at the end of the team. When she saw Lin Yan's move, she also followed suit and moved two steps to the side, drawing her pistol and becoming alert.
Only then did he see clearly why John had backed out.
A shotgun pressed against his chest pushed him out.
Lin Yan did not pull the trigger immediately. Having played many games, he understood that this kind of door-opening killing plot was obviously deliberately arranged by the system.
After the gunman who threatened John with a gun walked out of the pub, more people came out of the pub.
The leader of this group of people was a man with sparse gray hair, wearing a dark blue suit and a pair of black cycling gloves. He was about sixty years old. From his clothes to the accessories on his body, Lin Yan judged that this man was definitely a big shot.
