Wilderness Redemption Tour
Chapter 8 Bonfire Party
In the Horseshoe Lookout Camp, singing was heard in Dutch's tent. Lin Yan listened carefully and it sounded like the sound coming from a loudspeaker. It should be a phonograph playing a vinyl record.
Under Lin Yan's expectant eyes, Arthur announced to the people who followed the aroma, "It's ready."
At about the same time, cheers came from another bonfire. What Lin Yan didn't expect was that everyone took the roasted meat to Pearson and cut it into small pieces, then grabbed a handful of meat and bones and put it on the plate that had just held the apple pie and started eating.
Lin Yan understood after a brief thought. Women accounted for almost one-third of the camp, and they obviously couldn't finish a whole piece of meat. Dividing the meat into small pieces and adopting this self-service model not only took care of them, but also looked more elegant.
Since this mode was adopted, Lin Yan's plate inevitably had a few more pieces of mutton. He cautiously put a piece of mutton that was roasted and shiny without any fishy smell into his mouth. He chewed it gently with his upper and lower teeth, and the meaty aroma with rich flavor, rich juice and no strange taste instantly filled his entire mouth. Is this mutton? It's so delicious. I don't know if the sheep here are good or Charles's craftsmanship is good. Well, this should be roasted by Charles.
Lin Yan sat by the fire and ate meat, watching the people in the camp chatting and bragging loudly while drinking whiskey or brandy with the meat on their plates. The scene suddenly became lively.
"How can you eat meat without wine? This is yours." Arthur saw that Lin Yan was just eating meat silently and looking at everyone in the camp, so he took a bottle of whiskey and handed it to Lin Yan.
Lin Yan usually doesn't drink at home. He is the type of person who gets drunk easily if he drinks too much. Even though he doesn't have a strong aversion to alcohol, he usually stays away from it.
Since it's not my own body, I think I can drink a little, but I don't know if I'm a good drinker. Lin Yan took the wine from Arthur, thought about it for a moment, then bit off the cork on the bottle with his teeth and took a sip.
A spicy taste filled his mouth and throat, choking Lin Yan and causing him to cough a few times.
"Haha, it's okay once you get used to it. If you don't like the taste, you can choose brandy, which is said to have a fruity taste. But everyone says that it is for women, and men should drink whiskey, and the stronger the better. Cheers, buddy!" Arthur clinked his bottle with Lin Yan's and took another big sip with the meat on the plate.
Lin Yan heard that Arthur was fanning the flames, and he muttered: The person who said that should be asked to drink industrial alcohol. Then he took a big bite of meat, and then raised the bottle and took a sip.
The two of them finished the meat on the plate and did not get more. Arthur took Lin Yan and started to walk around the camp, introducing Lin Yan to everyone he met. When they saw Lin Yan holding a bottle of wine, they also enthusiastically drank with him and chatted for a while. After a round, Lin Yan, who had taken another bottle of wine, felt dizzy and his steps were a little unsteady. Arthur didn't know who he went to drink with. Lin Yan looked around and saw that there was an empty seat at the round table in the camp, so he sat down.
Javier, holding his guitar, Karen, who had put on her coat again, and the uncle sat here chatting. Dutch stood outside his tent, looking at the uncle and Karen who were only drinking, and Lin Yan who was sitting next to him trying to sober up, and said loudly: "Don't sit there in a daze, how about singing a song?"
"Hey, my friend, do you know 'Louisville Girl'?" the uncle asked Javier who was holding a guitar beside him.
Javier didn't say anything, but raised his hand and played a prelude.
"That's right! This is it!" The uncle smiled knowingly.
Javier began to play skillfully, and everyone sang along to the familiar tune:
I met a chick in Louisville, mark my words, she was a flirt. She was flirting all day!
My hand touched his toes, remember what I said, she said: Young man, you are too low. You have to sway all day long!
I put my hand on her knee, remember what I said, she said: Young man, you can be free. You're hanging around all day!
I put my arm around his waist, remember what I said, she said: Young man, you are too anxious. You are swaying all day long!
My hand went up her thigh, remember what I said, she said: You're doing great. Rocking all day!
My hands went up to her hips, remember what I said, he said: Let's go lie down on the lawn. Rocking around all day!
"She was swaying, and we started to sway too, hahaha." After the uncle finished singing a song, he joked with satisfaction, and the people around him also laughed.
What is this? Is this a pornographic song that is well-known to people in the West? Although it is a little worse than the old driver and mineral water I have heard before, it is still good enough.
After Lin Yan finished listening to the song with a mysterious smile while sitting in the front row, he suddenly felt like vomiting. He hurriedly stood up, ran a few steps, and came to the woods at the edge of the camp. He leaned against a tree and vomited a few mouthfuls of acid from his stomach. At this time, a gust of wind blew by, and Lin Yan felt much more comfortable. With the help of the moonlight, he saw a large smooth rock not far away, so he walked over and sat there, intending to rest for a while.
The Horseshoe Observatory at night has a unique view. Living in the city, Lin Yan rarely looked up at the night sky. When he occasionally looked up, he could only see a somewhat dark sky against the bright lights of the city, and only a few stars, including the Morning Star. Therefore, as he was not an astronomy enthusiast, he had never carefully observed the stars in the sky.
On the first night in the Western Wilds, Lin Yan had the honor of seeing why the Milky Way was called a river. In the dark blue sky, bright stars were like pebbles in a river, densely covering the sky. Lin Yan was a little dazed for a moment.
"Do you also like to look at the night sky?" A somewhat hoarse voice came from the other side of the big rock where Lin Yan was sitting.
The sudden sound startled Lin Yan, and he woke up instantly. "Who?" He shouted involuntarily.
"Oh, I thought you came here because you saw me."
Lin Yan looked sideways and found that there was a person sitting on the other side of the stone. She was wearing black clothes. Lin Yan subconsciously ignored her just now, thinking that there was no one here.
"Sorry, Mrs. Adler, I'm drunk and just noticed you here." Lin Yan recognized that this was Sadie Adler, the woman who had lost her husband and home and whom Lanny had introduced to her in the evening.
"It's okay. I saw that you seemed very interested in the sky just now, which reminded me of someone." Sadie turned her head and said to Lin Yan with her back facing him again.
"I just haven't seen such a beautiful night sky for a long time, so I was a little fascinated. By the way, this party is held for the two of us, aren't you going to attend?" Lin Yan wanted the other party to get out of his sadness quickly, so he asked this specifically.
"For them, every successful robbery is worthy of holding a banquet. We are nothing but an excuse for them to indulge themselves." Although Sadie had just been taken in, she seemed to have seen through the nature of the gang.
What she said seemed to make sense, and I couldn't think of how to refute it for a moment. Lin Yan tried hard to recall the Van der Linde Gang and its members' profiles that he had seen in his memory, and then added what he saw and heard today and said: "I don't think so. It was the O'Driscoll Gang that destroyed your family, and those who are celebrating for us and for themselves are the Van der Linde Gang."
"What's the difference? They're all murderers and robbers. A name can't change anything." Sadie said with some disdain.
"No, Mrs. Adler, I think there is a fundamental difference. Have you heard that other vicious gangs have so many female members? Do other gangs call their gang members 'family'? The most important point is: after rescuing a woman who lost her husband and her home, would other gangs be kind enough to take him in and take care of her? Not to mention anything else, if it was another gang, do you think they would have saved you at that time?" Lin Yan felt his thoughts became clearer the more he spoke. He asked a series of questions, forcing Sadie to seriously think about the reasons.
"This..." Sadie hesitated.
Lin Yan felt that a long time had passed, so long that there seemed to be no movement in the camp. Just when he wondered if the other party had fallen asleep, he heard the other party breathe a sigh of relief, and then Sadie's intermittent voice accompanied by sobs came into his ears. "This... sir, what you said... makes sense. There are... differences between people. I have always... always refused to admit it. I always felt that they... were the same as the people who killed my husband, so... that's why I refused to integrate with them."
Lin Yan, who had never made a woman cry, became a little nervous after hearing her sobbing, but his current idea was very clear, that is, to take this opportunity to help her get out of her pain. So he hurriedly got up and sat next to Sadie, patting her on the back and comforting her: "From your performance, I know that you love your husband deeply, and you can't get out of the pain of losing him. But life must go on. Your continued depression is not what your husband wants to see, nor is it what the people who saved you want to see. The reason why our lives are meaningful is that we have goals to pursue. When one goal is achieved, there is another goal waiting for us. So is it your goal to keep making others worry?"
When Sadie heard Lin Yan's question, she immediately retorted: "No, my goal in living is revenge, revenge on those damn members of the O'Driscoll Gang. I will kill them all! I will send them all to hell one by one! I will make them buried with my Jack!" In the end, she almost gritted her teeth and squeezed out these words from between her teeth.
Lin Yan shuddered inexplicably, wondering if this was murderous intent. This woman looked weak on the outside, but he didn't expect that the hatred in her heart was so deep.
Sadie completely untied the knot in her heart. She stood up, her expression softened, and bowed deeply to Lin Yan, saying, "Thank you, thank you for helping me untie the knot in my heart."
Lin Yan waved his hands hurriedly and said, "No, you're welcome. Didn't Dutch say that all gang members are one family? Now, do you want to join them? Let's go together. You haven't tasted the barbecue tonight, right? It tastes great."
Sadie smiled, took off the straw hat on her head and put it beside her. She put her hands back to tidy up her hair and said, "No need. I want to stay alone for a while. Don't worry, I'm fine. Have a good time tonight."
Lin Yan said with some regret: "Well, I'll leave first, and you should get some rest early."
"Yeah." Sadie hugged her knees with her hands and returned to her previous position.
After a conversation with Sadie, Lin Yan's alcohol level had subsided a lot. He walked back to the camp with a somewhat frivolous pace, and saw Arthur still sitting by the campfire chatting, so he walked over.
Beside the campfire, the old man was talking, while Arthur, Pearson and Bill sat beside him and listened quietly. Lin Yan sat back next to Arthur, who turned his head to look at him and smiled, "Are you feeling better?"
Lin Yan nodded and said with some pride: "It's just a bottle of whiskey. What's the problem? Just take a rest and pee and it will be fine."
After hearing this, Arthur smiled mysteriously and leaned close to Lin Yan's ear and said, "Just now I saw you doing something secretly with that widow behind the camp. I didn't realize that you like quite a variety of things, and you're quite good at them. It seems that I made a mistake in asking you to ask someone else for advice."
Lin Yan was surprised. What the hell was going on? He waved his hand in front of Arthur and asked, "Arthur, you must have drunk too much. I was just chatting with Sadie. How could you think that?"
Arthur pushed his hand away, put his arm around his neck and said, "Even if it's just a chat, this is a good start. Before, Sadie didn't even talk much to the women in the gang. You're still amazing."
Lin Yan was speechless, thinking that Arthur must have drunk too much. He stood up and said to Arthur, "You guys continue, I'm a little sleepy, I'm going to sleep first." After saying that, he yawned and turned back to his bed.
After lying down with his clothes on, Lin Yan sat up again. It was a pity that there was no pillow. Never mind, I'll just use something else as a temporary substitute. Lin Yan looked at the empty bedside and muttered. Then, he took off his windbreaker, folded it into the shape of a pillow, placed it on the bedside, and lay down again to feel it. This time it was much more comfortable.
Alas, gang life is so hard, you can only sleep with your clothes on at night. Lin Yan sighed, then spread out the blanket to cover himself, and fell asleep to the crackling sound of the burning bonfire and the faint laughter and voices of gang members.
In his drowsy dream, Lin Yan suddenly heard a series of electronic voices in his mind: [The Wilderness Redemption System is activated, now checking the player's progress...]
