When the pears are green

Chapter 1 Plain Countryside

After five or six days of continuous rain, a sunny day finally arrived.

The gentle and dazzling sunlight sprinkled on the thick yellow earth and also fell into the small puddles in front of and behind the house. Song Li liked sunny days very much. There would always be a period of continuous rain in late spring in the north, either raining or cloudy. The sun always hid behind the clouds and didn't want to come out, and the clothes and quilts were always damp.

Song Li took out the quilt and put it on the rack to dry. She glanced at the locust tree leaves sparkling in the sun. The dazzling spots of light jumped back and forth among the green leaves.

By the time Song Li had taken out all the bedding, she was already sweating. Song Li said in a barely perceptible voice, "It is true that when it rains continuously, you don't know that spring is gone, and when it clears up, you realize that summer is deep."

At this time, Song Yue also hung the clothes to dry. She walked to Song Li and asked, "Sister, what were you talking about just now?" Song Li smiled and said, "Yueyue, I said that after a while, we can hear the cicadas."

After hearing this, Song Yue said to Song Li, "Sister, I don't like cicadas. I only like fried scrambled eggs." After Song Yue finished speaking, she fell into the memory of fried scrambled eggs.

At this moment, their younger brother Song Xing came in from outside, jumping up and down. Song Li asked him, "Xiao Xing, where are your parents?"

Song Xing smiled and said, "Sister, Dad and Mom are back here. The corn has all grown. There's no need to water it anymore."

Song Li rubbed her arms with her hands. The scene of harvesting wheat against the wind and rain a few days ago was still vivid in her mind. The family endured several days and nights and finally harvested the wheat into the house before the storm came. Although everyone had a smile on their faces at that time, no matter how deep the smile was, it could not cover up the fatigue growing from the bottom of their hearts.

After a while, a couple in simple clothes came in from outside. They were Song Li's parents, Song Changhe and Zhang.

Looking at Song Changhe, who was honest and simple but spoke sweet words to his wife, after seeing the yard full of bedding and washed clothes drying, he laughed loudly and said to Zhang, who was a little old but still had a pretty face through the vicissitudes of time: "Xiangxiang, look at our two girls, they are just like you, hardworking, kind, and pretty."

After hearing this, Song Li and her brother both lowered their heads and covered their mouths and laughed. Zhang blushed and kicked Song Changhe.

Zhang kicked Song Li and her two siblings out of the house and sent them to play on the riverbank.

Although Song Li has been here for more than a month, she still doesn't want to go out. She realized that she had become Song Li, and she was so scared that she didn't go out for nearly half a month. She always lay in bed whenever she had the chance, as if only the bed could give her a sense of security.

Song Li once learned a lot about his past from Song Yue and Song Xing indirectly, but no matter how similar the disguise was, it was still fake after all.

Song Li once accidentally said the wrong thing in front of Song Changhe, which led to Song Changhe's repeated attempts to test her. Since then, Song Li has become more and more reluctant to go out and speak.

Zhang looked at Song Li who was becoming increasingly quiet. She scolded Song Changhe, and Song Changhe felt extremely regretful.

Zhang and Song Yue took turns to comfort Song Li, saying that Song Changhe was deceived by others, which was why he did such a thing. Song Changhe personally apologized to Song Li. Song Li knew that she had to live in this family and could not hold on to the past, so she gradually integrated into their lives.

Once something happens, the grudge will exist, and Song Li became more cautious in his words and actions.

From then on, Zhang often asked Song Yue and Song Xing to take Song Li out to play. Zhang was afraid that the villagers would gossip about Song Li, saying that Song Li fell into the river and became stupid, and she was even more afraid that it would affect Song Li and even Song Yue and Song Xing's marriage.

When Song Li and her friends approached the riverbank, they heard endless laughter. Some children were playing in the water, some were standing on the shore skipping stones, and some little girls were digging grass and playing with flower strings under the shade of trees.

Song Xing looked at the children playing in the river with envy in his eyes. Song Li asked in a low voice: "Xiao Xing, do you want to go too?" Song Xing shook his head and said: "My parents won't let me. I won't go. They will be angry."

Song Li knew that it was because she had fallen into the water before, so she comforted Song Xing and said, "Let's go skipping stones over there!" Song Xing and Song Yue jumped up happily.

Song Yue and Song Xing were competing to see who could hit the ball farther. Of course, the thirteen-year-old Song Yue was better than the ten-year-old Song Xing. Seeing Song Xing's unconvinced look, Song Yue stared at him with her big eyes. Song Xing felt embarrassed by Song Yue's stare and suddenly laughed, revealing the dimples on his cheeks and a small canine tooth.

Song Li stood on the embankment and looked around. He saw the endless plain connected to the sky. The corn had sprouted and was green, as if it had covered the earth with a layer of green.

There was a bank looming in the distance, and Song Yue said it was another river running on the land. From a distance, the lush forest seemed to wrap up the bank.

Song Li thought about going there to take a look after she became more familiar with the place.

"Sister, sister." A series of calls disrupted Song Li's thoughts. Song Li quickly turned her head to see that it was Song Yue calling her.

Song Li quickly responded: "Yueyue, what's wrong?"

Song Yue pulled Song Xing over here. Song Li put his thoughts to himself and hurried towards Song Yue.

"Yueyue, Xiaoxing, are you going home?" Song Li asked, looking at the sky.

Song Yue smiled and said, "Yes, sister, let's go back!" After hearing Song Yue's words, Song Li smiled and took their hands and walked towards home step by step.

Song Li likes this pair of siblings very much. Although his parents dote on his younger brother Song Xing, the little guy is not arrogant. Although he has a bit of a bad temper, he is very close to his two sisters.

As the second child in the family, Song Yue was often ignored by her parents. But she loved her brother very much and was even more dependent on her sister who grew up with her. Song Li once heard Zhang say that during the days when she was in a coma, it was Song Yue who watched over her day and night.

It seems easier to make a living on the endless plains, but it is not too easy. Working in the fields all year round may not necessarily provide enough food and clothing for the family for a year.

Wuzhuang Village, where Song Li's family lives, is located between two rivers. It is a village with about a hundred households.

The Song family lived in a small courtyard built with mud bricks in the eastern part of the village.

In the middle of the yard, there is a three-room house with beams facing south and north. The main room is in the middle. Song Changhe and Zhang live in the east room, and Song Xing lives in the west room.

Near Song Xing's room there is a house facing west and east. That is where Song Li and Song Yue live.

The kitchen is almost directly opposite Song Li and Song Yue's rooms. There is a smaller house to the south of it, which is usually used to store miscellaneous items.

Although the mud house had poor lighting, Song Changhe left large enough windows when he built the house, so the room would not be too dark and damp.

Zhang also opened up a small vegetable garden in the yard, and asked Song Changhe to build a chicken shed next to the vegetable garden. In addition, Song Changhe would do carpentry work during the slack season, so although the family was not rich, they would not go hungry.

The three siblings Song Li walked slowly on the road. The spring breeze blew their hair, making Song Yue and Song Xing laugh.

When Song Li and her friends reached the entrance of the village, Song Li saw a girl standing under a willow tree by the roadside. The girl's black hair swayed in the spring breeze, and her oval face was set with a pair of phoenix eyes, but these eyes were staring at Song Li with a vicious look.

Song Li felt that she had not offended anyone, so she asked Song Yue: "Yueyue, who is that person? Do I have any grudge against her?"

Song Yue gritted her teeth and glanced at the person under the willow tree, and said to Song Li: "Sister, she is a lunatic, ignore her."

Song Li looked regretful and said, "He's so good-looking, but he's a lunatic. What a pity!"

Song Xing walked up to Song Yue and said, "Second sister, why don't you tell the truth to the eldest sister?"

Song Yue said angrily: "Sister has already forgotten her, so don't bring her up again and make her sad. Xiaoxing, don't say anything."

Song Li stopped and looked back at the two people who were whispering. Song Li wondered what were you hiding?

Song Yue saw Song Li looking at them, and she pulled Song Xing forward guiltily.
