Chapter 696: Tirion's Choice
Uther looked at Tirion with a reproachful look in his eyes, feeling heartbroken that he could have made such a mistake!
Tirion's face was full of struggle. It was obvious that Uther's arrival had shaken his previous psychological preparation.
Finally, Tirion clenched his fists and said with all his strength: "I plead guilty, my lord, and I am willing to bear the consequences of my crimes."
When Tirion said this, the whole audience was shocked!
That's Tirion!
One of the first Paladins!
The elder of the Knights of the Silver Hand!
The kingdom's Great Lord of Hearthglen!
The crowd around Garen was excited. They had always thought that these accusations were false accusations against Tirion or exaggerated, but they did not expect that Tirion would admit it so openly.
Especially those colleagues close to Tirion and those guards from Hearthglen, they looked at Tirion with painful expressions and pleading eyes, begging him to answer the judge's words again.
Jialin watched all this with an expressionless face.
Galen didn't want to judge whether Tirion's decision was right or wrong.
Everyone has different ideas, especially those with firm beliefs like the first generation of paladins. Garen still remembers that when Tirion awakened the holy light, his synonym was "mercy"!
It’s too troublesome, Jialin sighed in his heart, it would be great if everyone was like me. The core of my Holy Light is judgment and verdict. As long as I think something is wrong, I can pick up a knife and do it without saying a word. The Holy Light also supports me especially!
"Command: shock!"
Uther let out an angry roar, and the power of holy light made the noisy crowd quiet down immediately as if struck by lightning.
Uther glared at Tirion and said coldly, "Very good, record it truthfully. The Paladin Lord confessed to his crimes!"
"Now, please invite Commander Dathrohan to the court to testify!" Uther called Dathrohan, "Have you accused this man of treason? Now please explain to the court the incident and the process of this man's crime!"
Dathrohan nodded slightly to Tirion sadly, and then told him how Tirion had obstructed them from capturing orcs and attacked the captured knights.
As Dasohan stated what happened, whispers rang out again in the hall as the four jurors discussed Dasohan's testimony.
Uther spoke to the crowd again: "Is there anyone here who can prove that what Grand Commander Dathrohan said is true?"
As soon as he finished speaking, a knight from Hearthglen stood up. He was the follower who had informed on Tirion.
"I can, my lord!" The young attendant looked at his lord with contempt in his eyes. "I was there when it happened, following the command of Lord Dathrohan. I witnessed Tirion's betrayal with my own eyes."
Uther and Dathrohan looked unhappy after hearing this. They disliked this treacherous and extremely rude paladin follower from the bottom of their hearts.
However, the young paladin continued as if nothing had happened: "Just as Grand Commander Dathrohan said, I saw Tirion trying desperately to rescue the orc. He even said that he had an agreement with the beast and no one could overturn it. You see, I knew he had ulterior motives. Long before we went to capture the orc, I had a feeling that this evil traitor could not be trusted!"
"Silence!" Uther couldn't help himself after all, and immediately scolded the young follower, "I have known Tirion for many years. I have even saved his life more than once, and we have worked together to break through the enemy's formation countless times. No matter what he has done, it is not the place for a green-headed boy like you to point fingers at him. Young paladin, you must learn to control your emotions and words."
Uther was blatantly taking sides, but no one in the court was dissatisfied. More than half of the people here even hoped that Tirion could be acquitted.
Uther waved away the panicked followers and allowed Tirion to defend himself.
Tirion recalled that many years ago his seven-year-old son asked him, "Dad, are all orcs bad?"
“Race does not indicate glory, and people should not be hasty in judging their different existence.”
This was Fording's answer at the time. Now, this noble paladin must set an example for his son with his words and deeds, in the name of his father.
He puffed out his chest and narrated the whole incident.
"My Lords, I know this may sound absurd, but the orc did save my life. In return, I pledged my protection as a paladin. The orc's name was Eitrigg, and he was the most formidable opponent I have ever faced."
"Please understand what I said. If I have to break my promise and betray my honor as a paladin in order to continue to follow the Silver Hand, then I would rather not do that. I am willing to accept any punishment you deem appropriate."
Uther understood what Tirion meant, so he chose four jurors to communicate with. It seemed that he was trying to get a lenient trial for Tirion. In the end, the jurors made concessions. Of course, the most important thing was to persuade the stubborn old man Antonidas.
Uther returned to the center of the court and continued presiding: "Tirion Fordring, this court remembers your great contribution to the defense of Lordaeron and the Allied Kingdoms over the years. Everyone present has witnessed your courage and bravery."
Uther looked at Tirion deeply. "But even for the sake of so-called honor, colluding with the mortal enemy of mankind is a heinous crime. In order to pardon that orc, you took a terrible risk for your own sake and disregarded the safety of Hearthglen. In consideration of your merits, if you are willing to abandon the oath you swore to the beast and reaffirm your commitment to the Alliance, I can pardon you."
This was already the biggest concession the Human Alliance had made. The orcs had committed numerous crimes and were deeply indebted. The war had destroyed the homes of a large number of people and caused countless casualties among humans. Many people had lost relatives at the hands of the orcs to a greater or lesser extent, and the hatred had become difficult to resolve.
Even if Uther, Tirion, Daelin or even the Archbishop want to favor Tirion, they must also consider the people's sentiments in the Alliance!
As long as Tirion changed his words and they executed the orc, everything could be treated as if nothing had happened. Tirion would still be a senior elder of the Silver Hand and still the overlord of Hearthglen!
"Please, my lord. Just do as they say and end this matter." Tirion's loyal retainer whispered.
Dasohan looked at the old fellow expectantly.
"So, the orc will be executed, right?"
"Yes, we will sentence that beast to death!"
This result seemed to be within Tirion's expectations, and he made a decision:
"I will continue to serve the Alliance until my death. You have no doubt about this."
"But I will not abandon the oath I swore. To break it would be a betrayal of everything I, and all of us, hold dear as noble men."
As soon as this statement came out, the whole audience was in an uproar!
