Chapter 146: Guarding the Fish and Waiting for the Thief
They waited for nearly half an hour, watching with boredom as another young priest helped other God-favored ones take on missions.
The missions were strange and the rewards were not so good. They suddenly felt that although the missions they had accepted before always had unexpected events, the rewards were definitely considerable.
"It's you guys. Long time no see." The person in charge of the mission hall, an elderly pastor named Melken Buckle, finally arrived and greeted them warmly.
Following behind him was the young pastor who had just left, who should have some understanding of the situation.
Phil Gray said, "Hello, you said you would trust us with the task. We have completed the task now, but why is it still showing as in progress?"
"Yes, I still remember. I just verified it with the church. Our church has 1000 gold coins for this task. However, the person who issued the task said that the target of the task is already dead? Should we cut this reward in half for you?" Melken asked with a smile.
"No, no, no. The death of the mission target has nothing to do with us. We safely sent him to the palace of the Pune Kingdom. Who could have expected that the king would execute him?" Eli retorted.
"Yes, the mission was agreed upon at the beginning. We would receive the reward if we could send him safely to the destination. We encountered many dangers along the way. We all tried our best to protect the mission target. As for how he is when he reaches the destination, it has nothing to do with us." Phil Gray said sincerely.
"This..." Melken hesitated, and Phil Gray continued, "If the reward of the tasker is cut in half every time for various reasons, how can other God-favored people feel at ease to accept the task in the future?"
Eli turned his gaze to the God-favored ones who were choosing tasks in front of the Mirror of Life. It seemed that as long as Melkan did not agree, he would go over and talk to those God-favored ones about the fact that the Church of Life did not pay the remuneration as agreed.
"Okay, go and collect your rewards." Melken reluctantly took out a seal from under the table and stamped the word "Completed" on the file.
"Praise life, we will be more proactive in accepting more tasks!" Eli took the bag with a smile.
Several people seemed very happy, as they had thought that this pastor would not be so easy to talk to.
Melken looked at them with a sly look in his eyes. "You performed very well. You wrote a letter to the church to expose the conspiracy of the mission target. The elders who came back praised you highly. In fact, I just wanted to say that although the mission reward is halved, I can give you another 500 gold coins as a reward. In short, you can get 1000 gold coins."
"Ah?" Phil Gray and Eli's faces fell. Then why did they go through the trouble to say so much?
"Okay, I look forward to your next mission. May the God of Life be with you." Melken smiled and nodded at them, then went to deal with other things.
"This guy is deliberately trying to make us unhappy." Eli shook his head, but they were already very satisfied to get 1000 gold coins.
As they walked out of the church, Ron came up to them, "How's it going? Have you finished your business?"
"Yeah." Phil Gray had already put the gold coins into the Holy Stone of Death. Ever since he mastered the true use of the Holy Stone and injected soul power into it, the space inside had become wider and wider, able to hold more things.
He planned to store more things this time in case of emergency.
"I've called a carriage. Come with me. I've also treated you to dinner. My wife's cooking is delicious." Ron waved at the carriage on the side of the road, and the carriage drove towards them.
Two horses pulled the second-floor carriage, and in front was a dark-skinned, very strong-looking coachman.
"Okay, no problem." Phil Gray nodded, and the other companions got on the carriage one by one.
They followed Ron to the warehouse he mentioned.
Ron's home is far away from the city center. There is a two-story building, behind which is this large warehouse.
Ron's wife was a native of Durr City. She looked very young and breathed air full of vitality. She and her three-year-old boy both had rosy complexions and looked extremely healthy.
"Praise life, thank you for coming to help us." She cooked a large table of dishes and warmly entertained Phil Gray and others.
"Thank you!"
But only half of the meal was eaten when someone came to tell Ron that their fish had arrived and needed to be put into the warehouse immediately.
"Let's go over there quickly." Phil Gray put down his knife and fork. Ron's wife packed the remaining food into a box for them to take to the warehouse to eat.
When I entered the secret room in the warehouse, I was hit by a chill. The temperature inside should be below zero.
However, Phil Gray and his companions were all favored by God. They circulated their divine power and their bodies quickly warmed up.
Ron held the iron box containing the fire-blood fish and placed it on the table in the middle of the secret room, then placed a thick cotton coat on the wooden bed next to it.
The wooden bed is very new, probably having been temporarily moved in to guard the fish.
"I'll get another small stove." Ron said. A layer of frost appeared on his eyebrows and he shivered with cold.
"No need, we don't need it. You can leave and we will just watch." Phil Gray persuaded.
"Okay, I trust you, but I'm afraid you'll be cold." Ron thanked him very much, then pushed the door and left. However, based on his perception, he didn't go far and slept in the outer warehouse.
It was very boring waiting in the secret room. Eli looked at the iron box. There was no lock on the iron box, but it was simply covered. There were ice cubes inside, and in the middle of the ice was the fire blood fish.
The fish was dead, but Eli could feel the heat radiating from it, and the ice around it was showing signs of melting.
Phil Gray felt that there was no breath of the undead in the secret room, not even a trace of divine power.
What on earth was it? He frowned.
More than two hours later, Ron brought them three thick cloaks. The black cotton cloak was very warm, and Phil Gray put it on, but he didn't wear a hat for fear of affecting his vision.
Unconsciously, it was already the early morning hours. Phil Gray's eyes were a little sore from staring at the fish. Eli yawned and said, "When will this fish thief come? Will he not dare to come out when he sees so many of us favored by the gods?"
As soon as he finished speaking, a black shadow flashed by, and with the sound of the iron box snapping, the fish in the iron box disappeared without a trace.
Although the black shadow was very fast, the God-favored ones were not vegetarians either. The three of them chased after the black shadow like a gust of wind. Ron in the warehouse only saw the door of the secret room being opened and several shadows flashed by.
Chasing the black shadow and jumping to the roof of the warehouse, they vaguely saw the black shadow's true appearance!
