I am the Pope in the Western Fantasy World

Chapter 251 Arrival at the Main City

We have arrived at Gilgeam, the capital of the Church of the Dead.

The city stood majestically on the boundless northern wasteland of the East Continent. The hundred-meter-high black city walls were adorned with white snow. The clearly defined black and white colors showed the city's unique majesty and cruelty.

A huge skull is hung high on the city wall. The skull seems to have life, moving left and right from time to time, watching the people coming in and out of the city gate.

Two teams of undead knights were guarding the city gates on the left and right sides respectively. They were not riding ordinary skeleton horses, but war horses covered with black armor and their limbs covered with bone spurs.

The large train stopped at the city gate and the passengers got off and entered the city.

After a quick check and confirming that there were no other believers among them who came to cause malicious damage, they were allowed to pass.

"This city wall is really magnificent, comparable to the ones of the Church of the Dawn." Phil Gray sighed. He wondered when the City of North of the Church of Destiny could be renovated again, so that it would not be so easily captured by the enemy.

"It has a history of probably thousands of years. I remember that the church is reinforced every ten years, so it still looks very new. Come to think of it, I haven't been back here for a long time, but nothing here seems to have changed." Eli felt a little unreal. He found that everything in his memory remained in the same place, as it had been for decades.

It's as if I had never left.

“Time sometimes doesn’t leave traces so easily.”

"Yes, these things haven't changed, but I have grown up, and my sister has changed too. I can't touch her face and the soft top of her hair anymore."

Eli crossed his arms and hugged himself, as if he was embracing his sister in his soul.

He still remembered when he was a child, he and his sister sat on the high city wall, with their legs hanging in the air, swaying in the breeze, and then being scolded by the huge skull, telling them not to seek death themselves, and that the God of Death would not want such stupid children to die.

Looking up, the skull was still looking at the city gate boredly, but it no longer recognized its own appearance.

Phil Gray comforted him, "Everything is getting better now, isn't it? When Will's affairs are almost dealt with, I will go to the abyss with you and really bring your sister back to us."

"Thank you, boss! Oh, I'm really late. Let's go to the selection place quickly. It should start soon." Eli silently said goodbye to the huge skull, sorted out his sad thoughts caused by returning to his hometown, and took his boss along the familiar streets to the cathedral in the city center.

The cathedral at the headquarters of the Church of the Dead is also extremely impressive.

A huge statue of the god of death is placed on the left, observing everything with cold eyes.

On the right is a black church that reaches into the sky, its pointed top made of tens of thousands of broken bones and debris.

There were so many believers who came to watch the selection that all you could see were people with pale faces and black robes. The crowded crowd blocked the road, leaving Phil Gray and Eli unable to move forward or backward.

"Oh my God, how do I get through this?" Eli pushed away the unknown people who were crowding around him, trying to make some space for his boss.

However, the power of the crowd sometimes makes even the followers of the divine revelation level helpless.

"It seems like the selection has begun." Phil Gray stared at the cathedral. He saw the bustling crowd at the door of the church quiet down. Then an ethereal bell rang and a faint oath sound came from inside the church.

"Oh, that won't do. Please make way!"

Eli was a little anxious. He led the way in front, rushing forward and pushing many people aside, which earned him the cold and angry looks of those believers.

Phil Gray awkwardly covered his face with his black robe, no longer reserved, and followed Eli, trying to squeeze out a path.

After finally reaching the church door, they ignored the priest's attempts to stop them and relied on their own strength to gain the qualification to "watch from inside".

"That's the Great Elder!"

At this time, Sid was holding a black leather book and reading the selection rules in the center of the church.

Standing beside him were two men and one woman. The woman wore a black headband and a tight long skirt. She had bright makeup and looked dignified and majestic.

The other two men looked to be around forty years old, both dressed in bishop's robes, with solemn faces, and equally imposing.

"Are the people next to him the current Sons of the Church of the Dead?" asked Phil Gray.

"It seems to be correct, but I only remember how they looked when they were young. Now they seem to have aged a lot. The Saint Sister has not changed, but I heard that she is married and her child is two years old. Hey, isn't there another young one?" Eli said softly.

"I don't know, it seems like it's about to begin." As Phil Gray spoke, the great elder put away the book in his hand and handed it to the servant beside him.

"Next, I will introduce our candidates for the Pope one by one. First is the Bishop of the Ashes, Rodney Warren. He is 43 years old and has served as the bishop of the district for nearly ten years. He used to be the leader of the Undead Legion of Gosasnae City. He is the only son of the current patriarch of the Warren family. He has made outstanding contributions to the Holy See. He is currently at the Divine Revelation level, but has heard the words of God's Demotion and is about to be promoted to the Divine Demotion level."

The archbishop stepped forward and pulled a saint next to the great elder to his side with a smile. "I believe the believers in the Ashes are already very familiar with him. After all, the gifts his believers have given him are almost filling up his warehouse, including but not limited to coffins, tombstones, etc."

"Bishop Rodney!"

"Come on Bishop!"

Some believers have already cheered.

Phil Gray felt a long-lost sense of familiarity, as if he had come to some kind of competition scene on Earth in his previous life.

"Thank you all for your support." Rodney nodded slightly. His voice was cold and his eyebrows were high and slightly raised. He didn't look easy to get along with, but he seemed to be quite popular among the believers. Or maybe this person was just a stooge he found?

Then Elder Sid introduced another Holy Son: "This is Holy Son Marshall Wollaston. Holy Son Marshall is the Bishop of the Eternal Sleep District. I think everyone has participated in the activities he presided over in the Tower of Mourning."

As soon as Sid finished speaking, the archbishop added:

"Many female believers have confessed their love to him before, but unfortunately our Holy Son only wants to serve God for life and has no plans to get married."

There was a burst of laughter at the scene.

"He has served as the bishop of this area for nearly ten years. Before that, he served as the bishop of Gotanya, the city with the highest death rate every year. It seems that the God of Death recognizes his political achievements!" The Archbishop patted the Son of Saint Marshall on the shoulder.

Phil Gray couldn't help but laugh. Although this was indeed a compliment to the Church of the Dead, it sounded full of irony to him.

"Holy Son Marshall is the designated next heir of the Wollaston family. He is 44 years old. If he becomes our Pope, he will have to give up the position of patriarch to his younger brother. But I believe Bishop Marshall will be happy to do so." The archbishop on the side continued to speak humorously, which aroused laughter from the believers.

The solemn and silent church suddenly became lively.

This archbishop seems out of place in this cold and rigid Church of the Dead?

Phil Gray had developed a certain fondness for the archbishop.

Elder Sid signaled the archbishop to shut up, and then continued to introduce the saint beside him: "This is Her Highness Saint Jaslin Grote. Her strength is also at the divine revelation level, but she is favored by the gods because of her uniqueness. She is only 27 years old. She is a combination of human and undead. Her mother was the deputy leader of the Legion of the Dead, a true undead creature, so her understanding of death is better than any of us believers. Her husband is also a member of the Legion of the Dead."

"Your Highness the Saint!"

"Support Her Royal Highness the Saint!"

The believers' cheers were obviously much more enthusiastic than those of the first two.

"Okay, these are our candidates." After Sid finished the introduction, he asked the three saints to stand back in their original positions.

"What about the other Son?"

"Yes, where is the Holy Son Yilaizhe?"

someone in the crowd asked.

"He didn't come. According to the selection rules, he is deemed to have automatically given up the selection." Great Elder Sid shook his head, with a bit of anger in his tone. The boy didn't even come for such an important matter.

As unreliable as ever.

“Wait, you left out two candidates.”

Just as everyone was silent in surprise, a voice suddenly came from the crowd.

Everyone turned their eyes to the source of the voice, only to find that the voice came not from the absent Saint Yilaize, but from two young men with unfamiliar faces.
