Chapter 50: Small Town Plague
"We can't rely on them, we have to find it ourselves," said Patrick.
"What are you looking for? A way out?" The leader glanced at him and said, "We are not in a hurry to get out. What we should look for now is the message left by the God of Destiny to find out what happened a thousand years ago."
“Perhaps the God of Fate is so capricious that he plays with the fate of others, rewarding them with eternal life one moment and punishing them to live in this closed space for generations the next.” Dwyer said with some emotion in his tone.
"Eternal life? The function of the scales may not be immortality. Seeing that the residents of this town are growing backwards, I think the real function of the scales may be to exchange the fate of a person's youth and old age." Phil Gray said carefully.
"Oh, that seems to make sense! Cousin, you are so smart!"
"The God of Destiny controls destiny. What you said does make sense." The leader thought for a moment.
"If the residents of this town have been growing backwards like this for generations, it means that the balance is continuing to play a role. In other words, the balance of the God of Destiny may be the one maintaining this space!" said the leader in surprise.
"This relic has a holy object! The holy object is the scale. The God of Destiny may not have taken the scale back to his kingdom, but left it here!"
When they heard about the holy relics, everyone's faces showed surprise. The preciousness of the holy relics was enough to cause a dispute between the two churches.
Phil Gray noticed the expressions of Mrs. Dean, Mr. Allen, and Mr. Dwyer. The eagerness and greed that flashed across their eyes was understandable, but...
He narrowed his eyes.
"This is all speculation based on the effect of the balance. I am not sure. Perhaps there are other reasons that can explain the reverse growth of the town's residents, such as the involvement of the God of Life."
"That's possible." The others nodded.
"But at the moment, only the God of Destiny and the God of Time and Space are involved here," Phil Gray said again.
"Let's split up and check it out this afternoon. If the scale exists, as the ones favored by the God of Destiny, we should be able to sense where it is," Patrick suggested.
"Didn't you notice?" the leader said calmly, "Our levels are all restricted to the listening level."
"what?"
Phil Gray didn't feel anything, he was at the listening level. He looked at Eli and Ernest, and they both nodded.
It is helpful to me. He was somewhat delighted in his heart. If there really was a holy balance, the leader would not be able to exert his divine-level strength in this space. With four people on his side, he definitely had the advantage.
But there is no guarantee that the leader has any other means, so it would be best if we can avoid him.
"The residents of this town seem to be ordinary people," said Mr. Allen.
“Those who are punished by the gods naturally cannot become those favored by the gods. And in a space that restricts strength like this, even if they are lucky enough to become those favored by the gods, it is difficult to break through to the level above listening,” said Patrick.
"There's no such thing as luck. Don't forget, the people here only know the existence of one god, and that's the God of Destiny." Eli tried to use his divine power, but he was not used to suddenly regressing to the listening level.
"Just do as he said. Let's check separately in the afternoon. Pay attention to where there are fluctuations of divine power and whether there are any records from thousands of years ago." The leader pointed at Patrick.
Everyone nodded.
Unfortunately, after asking questions for an entire afternoon, Phil Gray didn't get much out of it. The townspeople here were indeed enthusiastic and he told them a lot about the town, but as the mayor said, there was nothing special about it and everything was the same as an ordinary town outside.
He also tried to use his divine power, walking around, and feeling where there was divine power similar to his, but the entire town was unable to sense any of his divine power.
He sighed in disappointment and enjoyed the dinner prepared by the mayor with others. He also realized that others also gained nothing.
Just as they were about to go back to their rooms to rest, someone knocked on the door and shouted, "Mayor, it's bad, so many people are sick!"
"What?" The mayor, who was sitting next to them and chatting with them during dinner, stood up and opened the door. "What's going on?"
The man looked middle-aged. He lowered his head and looked at the mayor anxiously. "A lot of red spots appeared on their bodies, and they died after a while. Anyone who got close to them would also die. Now there are almost more than ten people dead!"
"How is that possible!" The mayor frowned, his small face full of sorrow, "Quick, take me to see them!"
But the middle-aged man did not listen to him, but pointed at Phil Gray and his group, "They are outsiders! The disease they brought, we have never had such a disease, and they had it as soon as they came. It must be them!"
"How can we be sick? Look how healthy we are. There are no such little red spots as you mentioned!" Patrick retorted angrily.
"This is God's punishment. You shouldn't have come!" The middle-aged man fell to the ground.
"Get up! What a disgrace you are in!" the mayor pointed at him and scolded, "Take me to see it!"
The middle-aged man then walked out with the mayor, sobbing.
"Shall we go and have a look too?" asked Mrs. Dean.
Mr. Allen nodded and said, "I am the one favored by the God of Life. Perhaps I can help them."
They followed too.
The fire lit up the dark town.
The crying sound echoed in the town. They stopped in front of a yard. There were more than a dozen townspeople watching outside.
"Scatter away, aren't you afraid of death?" the mayor shouted angrily.
"Those who are sick and those who have died are locked up inside." Another little boy came over with a white cloth around his mouth, as if he was afraid of being infected.
The mayor also wrapped his mouth with white cloth and opened the door to the yard.
"I am the favored one of the God of Life and I can cure some diseases. Let me go in and take a look first. You guys wait outside." Mr. Allen said.
"I'm going too." Eli followed and turned to Phil Gray and said, "Don't come. Be careful not to get infected too."
Phil Gray could only wait with everyone else, and soon Eli came out.
"How about it?"
Eli shrugged. "It's a little tricky, but Mr. Allen's skills are just for treatment, so I'm not needed. My abilities are more inclined towards cultivating plants."
The leader nodded and said nothing, and the others also breathed a sigh of relief.
Eli walked to Phil Gray's side and whispered while the others were talking to the townspeople, "Their disease is highly contagious and lethal. It clearly contains remnants of divine power. This disease caused by divine power... I think a plague maker has sneaked in."
Phil Gray glanced at the others who were talking and nodded slightly.
