Chapter 103 Witch Hunter
The rare peace allowed Carl to plan his future development with peace of mind, but this peace was broken four days later.
It was a gloomy morning. When the witch hunter appeared at the city gate, the guards immediately became nervous. He quickly ran down the tower and went to the inner city to report.
The Inquisitor named Gregory stood at the front, wearing an old white armor with the holy emblem of the Lord of Light Tarrant engraved on his chest, and a grim expression on his face. Behind him were a group of witch hunters of all kinds, a total of ten people, with varying equipment, some wearing leather armor, some wearing iron armor, but all wearing robes with the logo of the Hand of Light of the Inquisition printed on them, and the weapons in their hands were mainly flails and maces, as well as simple nail clubs made of wooden sticks with iron nails.
When they entered the city, the guards just watched, their faces pale, and no one dared to stop them.
Sister Eleanor Terron was standing at the gate of Rickburg at this time. After seeing the team, she unconsciously showed pride and arrogance on her face. She greeted Gregory and bowed slightly: "Your Excellency the Inquisitor, thank you for coming."
"Sister Senior, you can call me Gregory." Inquisitor Gregory knelt on one knee in front of her, kissed her left hand, and then stood up. "I understand the situation. From now on, my team and I will obey your orders and eliminate all witchcraft and evil spirits! May the light be with us."
"May the light be with us," Eleanor responded, with confidence flashing in her eyes.
When Carl received the report and led his troops to the city, the witch hunters had already entered the city and walked all the way in. The two armies met in the central square. The tense atmosphere instantly spread throughout the town. The street vendors began to pack up their stalls, and the surrounding residents closed their windows one after another. The square was filled with a solemn atmosphere.
Carl looked at Gregory with cold eyes, then turned his gaze to Sister Eleanor, who looked smug and full of provocation.
"Who let them in?" he demanded.
No one answered.
"Who were guarding the city gate in the morning?" he asked again.
At this moment, a soldier came up and said:
"My Lord, they are... people from the Inquisition..."
"So you let them in like this?"
At this moment, Gregory spoke, his tone was cold:
"Lord Carl, there is no need to blame a soldier. We just received a report that a witch was hiding in Rick Castle, so we came to investigate. We have no other intentions."
"Witch?" Carl turned around and looked at Gregory. He now understood what was going on. Perhaps the church had heard about it a long time ago, and Eleanor's sudden arrival was probably due to this. "Who told you there was a witch here?"
“Isn’t there?” Eleanor suddenly spoke up, and then she suddenly pointed at Amira’s wizard tower and shouted, “What is that building used for? Lord Karl, can you explain it to me?”
"It's just an observation tower." Carl replied.
"Guard tower? I think it's a wizard tower~" Eleanor shouted, "You hid a wizard here!"
Her shout shocked Gregory beside her. Then the judge nodded and said to Karl:
"Lord Carl, could you please let us confirm this?"
"Are you trying to search my military facilities?" Carl stared at him coldly.
"It's just to eliminate suspicion." Gregory continued calmly.
"What if I don't agree?"
"Then I will follow the witch hunter's code and take some slightly tougher measures." He continued calmly.
"You are so brave!" With this roar, Carl took the lead in drawing his sword. Then he saw that the soldiers behind him hesitated for a moment before following him and drawing their weapons.
Faced with this situation, Gregory did not make any move. He just spread his hands and said calmly:
"Do you want to kill the Lord's servants here? From now on, you will become sinners and give up the Lord's favor?"
As Carl said this, he found that the soldiers behind him began to retreat, and some of them put their swords back. He widened his eyes in disbelief, but heard a soldier beside him suddenly whisper to him:
"My Lord... those who attack the church without reason... will go to hell..."
In an instant he realized that he had called the wrong people. These local guards were, after all, just ordinary townspeople. Like all the lower-class people in this world, they believed in this and believed it without a doubt.
Eleanor smiled smugly again, and her expression even looked a bit like a villain who had achieved success:
"Well done~Gregory!"
Gregory nodded aside:
"Sister Senior."
Then he turned to Carl:
"Master Karl, I'm sorry."
Then Carl watched the witch hunters continue to advance towards the inner city. His soldiers made way for them wherever they passed. What should he do now? Carl thought to himself that if they saw Amira, everything would be exposed. The worst option would be to kill everyone. Thinking of this, he ordered one of the soldiers:
"Go and inform Alia immediately and ask her to summon the Fire Rose Guards."
Then he followed the witch hunter team.
The team arrived at the Mage Tower. Gregory first looked up at the tower, then took a deep breath and reached for the door handle. Carl's heart tightened.
At this moment, the door opened by itself.
Then he saw Amira come out on her own initiative. She was wearing the attire of a female knight of the Fire Rose Guard. She was wearing a helmet, and the fiery red armor outlined her agile figure.
After seeing Carl, he immediately bowed and said:
"Lord Lord!"
"Who is this..." Gregory looked at the female mage suspiciously.
"Amira, the new knight of the Fire Rose Guard!" Amira shouted loudly, like a young recruit.
"female?"
“You’ve probably heard of Flame Alia. The Fire Rose Guard has always only recruited female knights,” Carl replied. He then coughed a few times and said to Amira, “Hey, the judge wants to check our watchtower. He suspects we are hiding a witch.”
“Report, Rickburg does not hide any witches. Your Excellency the Judge, please check it out!” Amira stood at attention, saluted and shouted.
Gregory was so shocked by her shout that he scratched his ears. He hesitated and stood outside to look at the girl, but finally followed her into the tower. When everyone entered the tower, Carl was stunned. If he remembered correctly, according to the design requirements, this tower not only had a special magic circle, but also included an alchemy workshop, a library, and a pharmacy. It can be said that every room was full of magician style. However, the tower was completely different at this time. The first floor was an ordinary soldier resting place, with a small wooden table, a wooden double bed, and a fireplace for cooking. This layout made it seem as if this was really just an observation post. Each floor above was also extremely ordinary. Some were filled with armor and weapons, while more were used to store miscellaneous items.
They walked all the way to the top of the tower, but there was nothing there. Eleanor couldn't help but frown and rubbed her hands on her dress.
Amira turned back to them and said, “Is the presiding judge satisfied?”
"This is a witch's trick, she must have used magic!" Eleanor was somewhat exasperated.
Gregory just looked around, his expression calm and emotionless, and then he said:
"There's really no sign of witchcraft here."
Then he bowed to Karl and said:
"Excuse me, sir. Since there is indeed no problem here, we should take our leave now."
Carl just nodded calmly. When they went downstairs again, Alia also arrived with the Fire Rose Guard. The girl almost wanted to draw her sword on the spot, but was stopped by Carl. In the end, she just watched the witch hunter team gradually move away.
Alia came forward with a dissatisfied look on her face:
"That's why I said, don't take in a wizard easily."
“At least I got away with it,” Carl says, turning back to Amira. “It seems I wasted my time.”
The female mage waved her hand:
"The real trouble is not with me."
"What do you mean?" Carl looked puzzled.
"Humph, I know their style too well. They can't deal with mages, but they can deal with others."
