Come to another world and become a lord
Chapter 2 Bargaining
"What...what?" Carl looked at the king in disbelief. Such a bizarre thing was simply unbelievable to him. But everything seemed understandable. As a time traveler, he had been thinking about the meaning of coming to this world. Was it just to be a serf for a lifetime? But what was happening now was not what he expected. The northerners were moving south, and Rickburg was in danger. This was not an opportunity, but a huge crisis.
Ignoring Karl's reaction, Philip continued to speak to himself:
"Well, the enthronement ceremony should be carried out as quickly as possible. We can start now. After all, the war is approaching, so we should save ourselves the trouble of complicated ceremonies."
"But...we just want to leave~" Carl replied.
"Leave?" His words made Philip frown, and the latter shook his head and said, "No, no, no, you are the Baron of Rickburg now. When foreign enemies invade, the lord cannot abandon the city. This is the ancient rule of the kingdom. My Baron, do you understand?"
The Prime Minister Aaron on the side could no longer hold back and rebuked:
"Your Majesty, this is ridiculous. You can't just find a farmer and hand over your duties to him~"
"Nonsense, how can he be a farmer? This is obviously mine... My nephew, Prime Minister, stop talking nonsense~ Now we will complete the enfeoffment ceremony~ I will announce this to everyone in Rickburg! Bring me my sword~"
As he was speaking, the attendant beside him had handed him an exquisite sword. From the blade to the hilt, it was engraved with complex patterns, but it was not opened. It was just a ceremonial sword with no actual combat ability. Then he took the sword and stood up from the throne.
"Your Majesty!" Prime Minister Aaron shouted from the side, as if he wanted to say something.
But King Philip no longer paid attention to him. Instead, he focused his attention on Carl and said to the confused serf boy:
"Carl Flandal, come forward and swear allegiance to your lord."
What should he do? Should he accept the offer? Carl's mind was spinning rapidly. The northerners had never shown mercy in killing the nobles of the kingdom. Once the city was breached, he would surely die. But did he have any choice? He looked around at the guards. He was just a serf. If the king wanted him dead, he would have no way to stop him. If he accepted the offer, he would be a baron with a fief, a true noble, and even a royal family in name.
Thinking of this, he unconsciously took a step forward, and suddenly felt Jim pulling him from behind. Even a serf like him understood what was going on, but he had no choice. And this opportunity only came once. Either he would be a serf for the rest of his life, or he might even anger the king and be executed. It would be better to take a chance and change his fate.
Finally, he made up his mind, shook off Jim's hand, strode to King Philip, knelt on one knee, tapped the tip of the sword lightly on his shoulder, and heard the king's voice in his ears:
"I grant you the title of Baron and knight. From now on, you will adhere to the chivalric code, loyalty, humility..."
He paused here, tried to recall, then gave up and continued:
"Uh... Anyway, it's the rules that all knights should follow. You can go back and read it yourself later."
After saying that, he tapped Carl's shoulders and forehead with the tip of his sword, then retracted the sword and shouted happily:
"Ok, the enthronement is complete. From now on, the Lord of Rickburg is my nephew! Everyone, get ready, we are leaving here today!"
His actions once again made Military Minister Rhodes express his dissatisfaction:
"Your Majesty, regardless of whether it is appropriate to confer a title on a serf, such a hasty process..."
However, before he could finish, Philip's words made him swallow his words back:
"Rod, I have no objection if you want to stay."
The Minister of War blushed and said nothing more.
Then Philip looked around again, and after making sure that no one raised any objections, he showed a satisfied look:
"Then everyone, follow me back to the capital!"
After this was said, everyone seemed to be relieved. Although they were dissatisfied with the king's hasty enfeoffment, leaving here and returning to the capital was more in line with their personal interests. In the end, everyone chose to compromise and acquiesced to the enfeoffment.
Carl was almost confused throughout the whole process. It was so sudden and so dreamy that he almost felt like he was dreaming, until everyone left the hall and only he and Jim were left.
As the king passed him for the last time he heard him say:
"Well, Baron Rickburg. I'll leave this place to you. Don't let me down."
The whole day afterwards, the main castle was shrouded in a busy atmosphere, servants began to pack luggage and put away things, so many princes and nobles, countless gorgeous clothes and jewelry. It was not until dusk that it became quiet. During this period, no one paid attention to Carl, the new lord, as if he had never existed and was completely forgotten by everyone.
He could only sit in the main hall with Jim, doing nothing. This state continued until Prime Minister Aaron came to him. The old prime minister was accompanied by two servants, with a sad face.
He glanced at Karl, then sighed helplessly again:
"Karl Flandal, right?"
"Prime Minister~"
Carl stood up and saluted awkwardly, while Prime Minister Aaron just waved his hand in disdain:
"No need to be polite. To be honest, making you a baron is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in my life." He paused here and continued, "But now that things have come to this, it doesn't matter what I say. Since you are already the baron of Rickburg, I have only one request: defend this city to the death! Even if there is only one person left, you are not allowed to retreat. If you dare to escape..."
"I won't run away." Before the prime minister could finish his words, Karl interrupted him.
"What?" Karl's words made the prime minister feel a little surprised.
Before he could react, Carl continued:
"Besides, where can I escape to?"
With a smile on his face, he was right. If he ran away, he would become a serf with no status. It would be easy for a noble like them to find and kill him. He had no choice.
His words seemed to make Aaron feel a little relieved, and he nodded slightly:
"Well, that's good~"
Although he had no choice, he still had room for bargaining. From Aaron's attitude, Carl noticed that the Prime Minister cared a lot about this place. Indeed, this city was the gateway for the entire kingdom to defend against the north, so he couldn't not care. Thinking of this, Carl sorted out his thoughts and continued:
"But if I am left to defend, it will only be a matter of time before I fall."
His words made Aaron's eyes light up. Then he asked:
"What do you want to say? Do you think His Majesty will abandon you?"
"It looks very similar. It seems that His Majesty just wants to use me as a pawn." Carl replied calmly.
"Your Majesty is not stupid. He knows exactly how important Rickburg is." Aaron paused again, thought for a while, and continued, "One and a half months. We only need to hold on for one and a half months. By then, even if Your Majesty does not move, my reinforcements will surely come."
"Thank you very much, Prime Minister." Carl bowed his head to express his gratitude, "But this alone is far from enough."
“What did you say?” Aaron showed a hint of confusion when he heard Karl’s words.
"You want me to guard for a month and a half, but after all, I am not an officer. I was just a country bumpkin who only knew how to farm..."
Hearing Karl's words, Aaron showed a look of disdain again:
"Humph, you are quite self-aware of this. I don't even have any expectations of you. If I had no choice..."
"But even so, we still need to be able to defend Rickburg. We cannot afford the risk of losing it..." Carl continued, while Aaron listened quietly, "So, I alone am not enough. I need people who can really fight to assist me. Perhaps the Prime Minister can help me in this regard?"
After hearing Karl's words, Aaron fell silent again. After thinking for a long time, he suddenly turned around and whispered to a servant behind him:
"Go, call Alia."
Soon the door was pushed open, and a tall female swordsman strode into the hall. Her flaming red hair seemed to be burning on her shoulders, her eyes were deep, her nose was high, her skin was white and delicate, as pure as a newborn baby. She was wearing a scarlet armor that seemed to be tailor-made, perfectly wrapping her body and outlining her graceful curves. The patterns on the armor were meticulous, like leaping flames.
Needless to say, this person was Arya mentioned by the prime minister. Carl couldn't help but stare in a daze for a moment, and so was Jim next to him. The latter even let his saliva flow onto his clothes.
Alia ignored Carl and Jim, walked directly to the Prime Minister, and knelt on one knee:
"Prime Minister, are you looking for me?"
Seeing the swordswoman's respect, Aaron nodded with satisfaction, and then said to Carl:
"You've come just in time, Arya. Let me introduce you. This is my most capable guard, known as Arya the Blazing, a demon hunter, a bard, the strongest swordsman in the kingdom, and the captain of the Fire Rose Guard. If it weren't for her birth and gender, I believe she would already be a famous knight."
Carl nodded, but in return the girl gave him a cold look, as if she regarded him as an ordinary serf. Of course, at this time, he and Jim were indeed dressed like serfs, and their clothes were torn and dirty.
"Mr. Prime Minister, I don't understand why you want to introduce me to two country bumpkins?" The girl immediately questioned the Prime Minister's introduction.
"Alia, this is not some country bumpkin, but the newly appointed Baron of Rickburg, Carl Flandal. He is Your Majesty's eldest nephew and a noble member of the royal family." Aaron spoke with a hint of sarcasm.
"Member of the royal family?" Hearing the prime minister's words, the girl looked at Carl in disbelief, and then showed a look of contempt and suspicion again.
Aaron cleared his throat and continued:
"At the same time, I am also your new lord."
"What!" As soon as these words came out, Alia screamed and stood there for a moment, at a loss as to what to do.
However, without paying attention to the girl's reaction, Aaron continued:
"From now on, Arya and her Fire Rose Guards, a total of thirteen people, are all yours. Win this defense battle for me!"
When he said the word "win", he patted Carl's shoulder vigorously.
