Come to another world and become a lord
Chapter 4 The troops are approaching the city
When the townspeople began to enter the inner city in a mighty procession, Carl was standing on one of the arrow towers, looking around, with Jim standing beside him. The view from the arrow tower was surprisingly wide, and he could see the location of the inner city gate without any obstruction. Looking around, there was a dense crowd of people. There were a total of 45 households in the town area, with a total population of about 200 people. Now they all gathered on this main road, forming a long queue. Everyone's expression was full of fear and anxiety. He just felt a little helpless. After all, there was only so much he could do.
The wall structure of Reikburg is the most typical inner and outer city structure. Behind the small town is a solid castle, which is not only the residence of the lord, but also the last refuge for the townspeople. The outer wall is about 10 meters high, while the inner wall is at least 15 meters high. The connection points between them are blocked by towering arrow towers. Once the outer wall is captured, the enemy can still be kept out by sealing the tower gate.
In addition, Carl also noticed that both the outer city gate and the inner city gate used iron mesh gates. This kind of gate is controlled by a winch on the city wall. In a critical moment, it can not only close quickly, but also is extremely strong. Even a battering ram may not be able to break it open. Behind the city gate is also a typical urn structure, surrounded by city walls, leaving only a small open space facing the city gate. Once the enemy breaks in, it will inevitably become a live target. All of this arrangement is for war considerations. Sure enough, the design concept from the beginning is a military fortress that can repel enemies thousands of miles away. He thought aimlessly.
While I was thinking, Alia had already walked up the stairs.
"Scouts reported that the northern army has crossed the Fall River and is less than five kilometers away from here. There are thousands of cavalry, and infantry recruited from other places, the number may reach tens of thousands."
"Tens of thousands?" Alia's report made Carl gasp again.
"Yes, in addition, they also captured villagers from two nearby villages and drove them here together." Alia continued.
"Capture the villagers? Why are they doing this?" Jim on the side couldn't help but ask.
In return, Alia sneered:
"Humph, this is a common trick used by nomads. Let these people rush to the front and act as cannon fodder, even if it's just to consume the enemy's arrows."
"This, this is too cruel!" Jim shouted angrily after hearing the explanation.
"This is war." The girl seemed indifferent, as if she had long been accustomed to it.
"Carl, there must be some way, right? We can't just watch these people die!" Jim continued yelling.
But Carl ignored his words, instead he focused his attention on Alia and asked:
"what is your opinion?"
"The enemy will definitely force this group of people to attack the city. This is an old tradition of the northerners. Give them a few ladders and let them climb up unarmed. It doesn't matter even if they all die..." Alia paused here, "We need to arrange some archers on the arrow towers on the outer wall. Whoever dares to climb up will be shot! Even if the outer wall is going to be lost, we can't let them take it easily with a group of untouchables!"
"Wait, those are just ordinary villagers, do we really want to do this?" Jim shouted.
"What Jim said makes sense. These people are not our enemies. They are just ordinary people of the kingdom." Carl said, tapping his chin with his finger.
"But they will do anything to survive." Alia replied bluntly.
"Hmm..." Karl touched his chin with his hand, thinking for a while, and then said as if he had made up his mind:
"I've changed my mind, Alia. Gather everyone at the outer city gate."
The girl showed a surprised look:
"you sure?"
"Yes."
"I have to remind you that we have limited manpower and it is impossible to defend all positions! Once the enemy..."
Before she could finish, Karl interrupted her:
"We don't need to deploy defenses at all locations, just near the city gates."
"What did you say?" The girl looked at him with almost incredible eyes.
"Trust me, just follow my orders."
The girl looked at him with an extremely suspicious expression, as if she was going through a series of ideological struggles, but in the end she said nothing and retreated.
Soon, a team of about 30 people, led by Alia, marched towards the city gate. Apart from the local guards of Rickburg, this was the first time that Carl saw the famous Fire Rose Guards under Alia. Six girls, who were also wearing gorgeous armor like Alia, lined up in a neat team and walked at the front of the team. The girls did not completely obey Carl's orders, but left half of their guards in the inner city. Carl had no opinion on this. He just watched the team. The girls all looked majestic and walked in unison. They carried halberds and longbows on their backs, short swords on their waists, and leather quivers with an exaggerated capacity of more than 30 quivers. At the same time, they took into account the three combat needs of long-range shooting, fighting cavalry, and close combat. Their equipment was far better than that of the dozens of local guards under Carl, and their mental outlook was even more different. This made Carl feel fortunate that he asked the prime minister for them.
He even doubted whether they were really women, rather than a group of cross-dressing men. It was hard to imagine that a group of girls could walk briskly and flexibly with such heavy loads.
Following behind were the local archers of Reikburg, more than 20 of whom were brought out by Alia. They wore the kingdom's unique red and white checkered cotton armor and tile helmets - a kind of helmet with a top iron plate as the center, surrounded by various irregular iron plates, forming a ring like a tile to protect the entire head. Due to its simple craftsmanship, it has become one of the most common helmets in the kingdom. Of course, the defense power of the simple iron plates is naturally very limited. On their backs were an ordinary kingdom longbow, a wooden quiver that could store 14 arrows, and a dagger tied to their waists as a last resort for close combat.
It was already noon when everything was arranged. Standing on the top of the city wall, one could vaguely see the flying dust in the distance. In the dust was a mighty army from the north. Leading the way were nearly 5000 nomadic archers, wearing light leather armor, felt hats, and equipped with short bows and sabers. For a long time, these guys were the most troublesome objects for the kingdom. They were fast and flexible, good at riding and shooting, and almost became the nightmare of most infantry. They were the elite and the trump card of the north that could threaten the kingdom. But there was a fatal weakness: they were not good at siege. The light armor and simple weapons made them extremely vulnerable after dismounting. Of course, the commander on the opposite side also understood this, and naturally would not let these people waste their time on fearless battles to climb the city. So the real main force of the siege was not them.
Thinking of this, Karl glanced back and forth at the opposing army. He saw heavy infantry, each wearing chain mail, holding a round shield and a battle axe. Their attire was not that of a nomadic tribe. They might be other forces that had been united, or they might be mercenaries. Their number was so large that there were at least a thousand of them. In addition, there were rows of archers and light infantry wearing simple cotton armor, numbering several thousand. Their attire was different, and their equipment was also uneven. It was more like a temporary ragtag army, but even so, the sheer number was enough to crush him to death.
As they got closer to the city, the army gradually slowed down its pace and finally stopped. Then, led by several cavalrymen, a large group of ragged villagers were pulled to the front of the formation. There were men and women, old people and children. They were divided into several rows and tied to ropes and led forward.
Carl watched all this quietly, his expression as calm as Alia's, while Jim on the other side had clenched his fists.
He saw the cavalrymen first said something to each other, then took out the daggers at their waists and cut the ropes that bound the villagers, and finally waved the whips and began to shout loudly.
The villagers began to move towards the castle under the shouting of several people. They walked reluctantly at first, but soon, several cavalrymen gave up whipping them with horsewhips and started shooting the last ones with bows and arrows. As several people screamed and fell to the ground, the crowd moved faster and finally turned into a mad rush.
However, even so, the cavalrymen did not stop and continued to shoot arrows at those who ran the slowest. People kept falling down with screams, most of them were elderly people, and even children.
Looking at the tragic situation below the city, Jim could no longer contain his anger and began to bang his fists on the battlements:
"Karl, you will save them, right? You will save them!"
"What a joke."
Meanwhile, Alia had already drawn her bow and drawn her arrow, and was shouting to the people below:
"Stop immediately, or we'll release the arrows!"
However, her voice was immediately drowned out by the noise below.
As people gradually approached the city wall, they noticed that the archers on the wall began to aim at them. They hesitated for a moment, but when their companions' screams sounded again behind them, everyone seemed to have made up their minds and rushed towards the town again, gradually entering the range of the bows and arrows.
Alia had already pulled the bowstring to its full length, and when she wanted to let go, Carl had already grabbed her bow and gently pressed it down.
"Okay, that's it." He said softly, and then shouted to the guards behind him, "Pass the order down, open the city gate!"
"What?" Alia widened her eyes and looked at Carl with an almost incredible expression.
