Chapter 9: Castle Dinner
One hour before dinner, Emerald Castle Restaurant——
The dinner was about to begin, and the maids had already started to get busy. They all wore cotton gloves and wiped the non-existent dust on the table. The butler pushed a special tableware cart and parked it next to the table. The maids picked up the tableware on the cart and wiped it carefully one by one. From time to time, they could be seen measuring the table with their fingers, probably to confirm some distance, and then placed the shiny tableware neatly on the table.
Seeing that the time was almost up, the butlers and maids lit white candles together and placed them on the candlesticks.
……
7:50 PM! At the castle gate——
From a distance, I saw the butler Gandalf waiting there.
Balto and Bob took a few quick steps forward, and Gandalf took two symbolic steps forward.
"Sorry, we're late," Barto said.
"No, the time is just right, please follow me." After that, Gandalf led Barto to the restaurant.
As soon as I walked into the restaurant, I saw Baroness Lilibet coming to greet me, and Baron August had also stood up from his seat.
If this batch of slaves were not really important and they would have to cooperate in the future, Barto himself would not have invited him to this dinner. Barto had participated in several noble banquets before, but this was Bob's first time. Although he became a low-level knight attendant, his status did not improve much. If he had not followed Barto this time, he would not have had the opportunity to attend the dinner.
After Bob sat down, he began to look around the restaurant. The tablecloth was spread neatly on the dining table, and a set of silver cutlery was neatly placed on the tablecloth. Knives, forks and spoons were all available, and there were unknown patterns carved on the cutlery.
There is an amethyst candle lamp hanging in the center of the restaurant, and candlesticks are placed on both sides of the dining table, which are full of white candles. An oil portrait of the Baron is hung above the fireplace, which is very majestic. The overall light in the restaurant does not look so bright, but it is not dark at all. Instead, it looks softer, giving people a very comfortable feeling.
The decanter on the table has begun to be filled with burgundy wine, which emits bursts of aroma.
The servants began to serve the dishes. First came a fruit plate with fresh fruits and vegetables as the main ingredients, sliced white bread cubes, cheese, ham, and some special salad dressing.
The food was so delicious that Bob felt his mouth starting to water.
"Slurp." The main course hasn't started yet, so he can't embarrass himself, Bob thought as he swallowed.
"The territory is still under construction, and the dinner was prepared in a hurry. I apologize for the poor hospitality and impoliteness." Lilibet said to Barto who was sitting on the right.
"It's already very rich, ma'am," Barto replied.
"We've been at sea for almost a month. We can only eat bread and salted fish every day. I'm already bored of it," Barto continued.
"Thank you for your hard work, Barto. The slave trade will subsidize you." Richard August, who was sitting opposite, looked at Barto and said.
"Thank you for your generosity, Your Excellency the Baron. It is a great honor to be able to attend this dinner."
……
Bob chewed his food carefully, watching the butler come back with the dining cart and the maids begin to serve the food.
"Hey, dinner is here," Bob thought to himself.
The first dish was T-bone steak: it was brown all over, probably not fully cooked, and looked very appetizing.
Bob watched the Baron and Barto talking while eating, then looked down at the knife and fork in his hand. He felt that it was really troublesome and he really wanted to swallow it directly into his stomach.
"Hehe, hehe." He heard a laugh coming from the left and turned around. It was the Baron's daughter laughing at him.
"You don't know how to use it?" Helen August said with a smile.
"You do this..." Helen demonstrated.
I watched Helen skillfully hold the steak with the fork in her left hand, cut it into small pieces with the knife in her right hand, and then put the pieces into her mouth with the fork.
"Uh, is this difficult?" Bob followed suit and easily got the hang of it.
After all, with the physical coordination of a low-level knight squire, is he really worried about not being able to eat steak?
Well, it’s really good. The meat is tender and smooth in the front, but a bit hard and chewy in the back.
The second dish is cream of mushroom soup: the soup is milky white, with various wild mushrooms as the main ingredients, and a proper amount of cream and other condiments. A sip of it is rich and smooth, which really warms the heart and stomach.
The third dish is stewed beef tripe: it tastes like tomato, slightly sour, and not too greasy, and goes well with rice.
The fourth dish is grilled foie gras: it tastes of lemon and black pepper, and also minced garlic, slice by slice, very delicious.
The fifth dish is roasted rabbit meat: from the cross-section, it looks a bit like chicken, with some coarse salt and spices sprinkled on the surface. The meat tastes firmer than chicken, crispy and full of flavor.
The sixth dish is roasted wild boar leg: although the shredded meat is a bit thick, it is more to Bob's taste.
Seeing Bob's expression as if he had never seen anything like eating or drinking, Barto was speechless.
"Try this, Barto. This is the eight-year-old port red wine we bought from Lincoln Manor." Seeing that the wine was almost awake, August smiled and signaled the maid to pour the wine.
Raising the transparent glass goblet in his hand, Barto took a small sip. It was smooth at the beginning and clean at the end. It had a strong fruity aroma and the acidity was just right, without too much sourness. It tasted very sweet.
"It's worthy of being produced by Lincoln Manor." Barto said with satisfaction.
The last dish served was a plate of fried sausages with applesauce. It looked delicious, but Bob was already a little full. Although the knight had a big appetite, he couldn't eat any more after such a big meal.
"It's good to be a nobility. You enjoy a good life from the moment you are born. Look at the heroic Baron, the beautiful and charming Baroness, and this lovely noble lady. I really don't know how many lifetimes of blessings they have accumulated." Bob thought about himself. He originally thought that becoming a low-level knight's squire was not bad and his status had been improved, but compared with these people, he was still far behind.
Bob feels that he has indeed been lax recently and he still needs to keep working hard.
……
"Have you finished eating, Nora?" Colin asked.
"I've finished eating a long time ago. Here, these are for you too," he said, handing Colin half a loaf of brown bread and some dried salt fish on the plate.
"I'm not a pig, but I'm almost there."
"Let's settle down first. I can finally have a good sleep today. I have been drifting on the boat for nearly a month, and I feel like I haven't slept at all. I have been in a daze the whole time." Colin stood up and said.
"Well, when we get back later, go to bed early, brother."
"Goodnight, Nora."
"Good night, brother." After saying that, Nora went back to the female slaves.
