The programmer and his woman
Chapter 10 Garment Factory Work
In a corner of the room, the slightly old computer stood quietly. Its shell had been polished by the years and turned slightly yellow, and the silver paint on the screen frame had long since peeled off, revealing a slightly dull metallic color. Whenever I approached, I seemed to hear its low breathing, which was the sound of it struggling to run the program.
This computer has accompanied me through countless days and nights. From a novice programmer to a code expert, it has witnessed my growth and transformation. However, as time goes by, its performance is gradually declining. Whenever I open those programs that I used to run easily, it starts to seem powerless and runs slower and slower, as if it is an elderly person trying to keep up with the pace of the times.
I knew it was time to upgrade the hardware of this computer. New memory sticks, hard drives, or even replacing the entire processor were the keys to its rejuvenation. However, I had been studying at home for a long time and had no source of income. I had also given away the only New Year's money I had.
At this moment, I realized that it was time to make a change. I couldn't stay at home all the time. I needed to go out to work. Only in this way could I have enough money to upgrade my computer and let it continue to accompany me for more years.
I stood up and walked to the window. The sunlight outside the window shone on my face, warm, as if telling me: It's time to set off. I took a deep breath, as if I had sucked all my courage and determination into my lungs.
But after several setbacks, I lost confidence in the talent market. I had no education and no work experience, so it was difficult for me to find a suitable job in the talent market. But where else could I find one? I was thinking about this, but my eyes were wandering around the room. At this time, my eyes fell on the evening paper on the table. I was delighted. Yes, some units had recruitment fairs in the newspaper. Thinking of this, I picked up the newspaper and started reading.
I browsed through the job postings one by one, silently evaluating the suitability of each position in my mind. The first one was for a truck driver, and I shook my head. This was obviously not a good idea. The second one was for a cleaner, and I frowned slightly. This was usually a job for old ladies, and it didn't match my major.
I continued to read, skipping those positions that were not related to my major or that I was not interested in. Finally, my eyes stopped at a job posting: "Recruiting a statistician, need to know office software." I was excited, this was exactly the position I needed!
I noticed that the contact was a phone number and decided to call it immediately.
I walked to the phone, picked up the receiver, and dialed the number listed in the newspaper using my home landline. There was a "beep" on the other end of the line, and I waited nervously.
A few seconds later, the call was connected. A gentle female voice came from the other end of the phone: "Hello, how can I help you?"
I took a deep breath and tried to sound calm. “Hi, I saw that you have a statistician job posting in the evening paper. I would like to learn more about it.”
She first introduced the basic situation of the company, and then told me that although the company is not in the city, it provides convenient shuttle service for employees, and they can take the shuttle bus to and from get off work every day.
Hearing this, my doubts were slightly relieved. The commuting problem that I was worried about before now seemed not so difficult to solve. The lady then asked if I was willing to attend the interview tomorrow and gave me a detailed introduction to the time, location and license plate number of the shuttle bus.
I knew this was a rare opportunity, so I immediately accepted the lady's invitation. The next morning, I got on the bus to the factory at the agreed time. It was a small bus. Although the bus was not big, the interior was clean and tidy. When I got on the bus, there were already two or three people sitting quietly in their seats. The bus stopped at two stations on the way, and six more people got on. They were dressed differently, and the atmosphere in the bus gradually became lively, but everyone still maintained basic courtesy and distance.
The bus drove quickly towards the suburbs, and the scenery along the way gradually changed from the bustling city to the quiet countryside. Finally, the bus stopped at the door of a factory. I looked up and saw big words on the door of the factory: This is a garment factory. The factory should be considered small to medium-sized, with several workshops and about 100 to 200 workers.
After I got off the bus, I followed the crowd into the factory. The factory was neat and orderly, with the roar of machines and the busy figures of workers interweaving into a vivid picture. I asked around and came to the section chief's office mentioned on the phone.
The section chief's office was located in a corner of the factory, with the door half open. I took a deep breath, tidied my appearance, and then knocked on the door gently, "bang bang bang".
I heard a clear female voice from inside the house: "Come in." I pushed open the door and saw a lady with delicate features. She looked less than 30 years old, with long hair and a slim figure. She was elegant and energetic. To be honest, I have never seen such a beautiful woman in my life. Her beauty seemed to be a natural attraction that made people unable to look away.
When she saw me looking at her silently after I came in, she smiled and asked, "Hello, are you here for an interview?" I realized my mistake, but my brain was still short-circuited at that moment, and I blurted out, "Wow, you are so beautiful."
As soon as I finished speaking, I immediately realized my mistake. The lady was obviously also stunned by my sudden compliment. A hint of shyness flashed across her face, but then she became a little annoyed. She frowned slightly and asked in a serious tone, "Who are you looking for? What's the matter?"
I immediately felt my cheeks getting hot and my heart filled with regret. I quickly adjusted myself and tried to answer in a formal tone: "Hello, I'm Wang Dong, and I'm here to interview for a statistics position."
"Yes, I know. I was the one who answered the phone yesterday." The section chief replied in her usual clear voice.
I smiled slightly, trying to ease the previous awkwardness, and then continued, "I was wondering why the voice on the phone yesterday was so nice. It turns out that the voice is just like the person."
The section chief obviously didn't expect me to answer like that. She was trying to keep a serious face, but suddenly she lost control, covered her mouth and smiled, then teased: "You kid, you must have lied to girls a lot, you are so smooth-talking."
I quickly waved my hands and explained, "No, no, I really mean it. But having said that, I do look forward to working here and hope to contribute to the company."
The section chief seemed quite satisfied with my answer. He nodded, handed me a few work point forms and said, "Here are some work point forms. Calculate the total work points for each process according to the different processes, write it down on the form and give it to me."
I took the form and secretly thanked myself for not continuing to talk glibly but getting to the point. I looked at the form carefully. The data on it was densely packed, but I knew it was an opportunity to show my abilities.
I quickly glanced over the form, then picked up a pen and started calculating. Although the task was a bit tedious, I believed that as long as I was careful and patient, I would be able to complete the task accurately.
In the following time, I devoted my full attention to the work, checking the data from time to time to ensure that the total work points for each process were accurate. When I finished all the calculations, I carefully checked the form and confirmed that there were no errors before handing it over to the section chief.
The section chief took the form, looked through it carefully, and then smiled and said, "Not bad, you did a good job. It seems you came prepared."
I was secretly delighted when I heard her praise, but I remained humble on the surface and replied, "Thank you for the compliment, Section Chief. I will continue to work hard."
The section chief continued to ask, "You know how to use a computer, right? Use Office software to write a document, make a statistical table or something like that."
"Yes." I answered confidently.
Then, she introduced the company's system and the salary of the position in detail: "We are a Japanese company. The salary for the statistics position we are recruiting this time is 800 yuan per month. There is no contract and Sunday is the only day off. If you live in the city, there will be a shuttle bus to go to work every day. You will enter the factory at 8:30 in the morning and get off work at 5:00 in the afternoon. Is there anything else you need to know?"
"Oh, no," I replied.
"Well, today's interview ends here." The section chief handed me a resume and said, "Fill out this resume and go back to wait for notification. If we decide to hire you, we will contact you by phone within two working days."
However, when I took the resume form, I didn't fill it out immediately, but stared at her involuntarily. The section chief seemed a little uncomfortable with my gaze, she coughed lightly, and then said helplessly: "Fill out this form."
After he finished speaking, seeing that I was still indifferent, he repeated, "Take this form and fill it out."
Seeing that I was still looking at her motionlessly, she asked angrily, "What's wrong with you? Why are you staring at me without taking the watch?"
I realized my mistake and quickly apologized: "Oh, sorry, sorry, I was so engrossed that I just wanted to look at her for a while longer. I have never seen such a beautiful girl since I was a child. If I don't pass this interview, I will never have the chance to see her again."
After hearing this, the section chief smiled and shook her head gently: "Ah, I really can't do anything about you. How can you be so shameless at such a young age?"
Then, she changed the subject: "But I also like your straightforwardness. Fill out this form and come to work tomorrow."
I looked up in surprise: "Ah~! Don't I have to go home and wait for notification?"
The section chief looked at me with a smile and said, "I also want to hear you praise me more. The most important thing is that you are also capable. I originally wanted to choose between you and the girl in front, but I don't want to choose one. I'll choose you. You look pretty good. There will be a girl leaving your position tomorrow. Come to me when you go to work tomorrow. I will take you to do a work handover with her first."
I replied excitedly: "That's great, sister, you are the most beautiful."
After hearing this, the head of the department smiled even more: "Okay, stop talking nonsense, and go fill out the form."
I took the resume form handed to me by the section chief and filled in every piece of information carefully. When I finished filling it out, I checked it carefully to make sure there were no omissions or mistakes, and then handed it to the section chief respectfully.
The section chief took my resume, reviewed it carefully, then looked up and said to me, "Okay, I'm done here. But it's still early, and the bus you took this morning doesn't go back to the city until after get off work in the afternoon, so if you want to go home now, you can wait for the small truck that goes to the city for business at noon."
After a moment's thought, I replied, "Then I'll take the noon bus, so I can get home earlier."
The section chief smiled and nodded, saying, "Okay, I'll take you to see Master Li later. He's the driver of the small truck, and you can take his car back."
"Thank you for your help, Chief." I said gratefully.
"Okay, don't just stand here like an idiot. Go out for a walk and come back to me at noon." The section chief added.
I responded and walked around the factory. I found that there was nothing around except the factory area. It was a wasteland for several kilometers. There were no shops, no restaurants, and not even a snack stand. I was a little disappointed. I thought I could at least find a place to eat nearby.
I stopped and looked around. All I saw was an empty space. In the distance, the sky and the wasteland met to form a horizon. I seemed to be the only traveler in this land.
I sighed and turned back. I looked at the time and it was already noon. I found the section chief on time and under her guidance, I met Master Li.
Following Master Li's instructions, I came to his car. When I saw the car, I was stunned. It was a stuffy car. It looked very ordinary from the outside, but the inside was very different from what I expected. There were no seats in the car, and the windows were not transparent but sealed with opaque materials. It was pitch black inside, as if it was a closed little world.
"You wait here for a while. There are a few people who need to go to the city. We'll leave when everyone is here." Master Li's words broke my brief daze.
I nodded and stood beside the car, feeling a little nervous. This kind of environment is undoubtedly a challenge for someone like me who is used to bright and ventilated spaces. But thinking about being able to go home early, I decided to endure it.
I stood by the car, waiting for other passengers to arrive. Sure enough, after a while, more than a dozen people came over one after another. Most of them were young people, talking and laughing, and they seemed to be accustomed to this environment.
This small van originally had limited space, and now it was a challenge to accommodate more than ten people. I watched them get on the bus, and everyone found their own seat, some standing, some squatting, and they made full use of the space in the car.
When I was the last one to get on the train, I was stunned. The train was already packed and I could hardly find a place to stand. As I hesitated, Master Li shouted, "Push in as hard as you can, or the door won't close!" I had no choice but to bite the bullet and try to find a gap.
When Master Li saw that I couldn't squeeze in, he personally took action and pushed me in. I tried hard to adjust my posture, trying to make myself more adaptable to this small space. However, no matter how hard I tried, the door would not close.
"No, it still won't close, try again!" Master Li said, and pushed me in again. I felt my arms and legs were squeezed so hard that they hurt, and I even felt my waist was twisted. Finally, with a "click", the car door closed.
At this time, I was twisted and standing in a half-squat position, which was a real torture. This position made my waist and legs ache after a while, and I couldn't help but count the time in my heart. Every second felt like a year.
The car was so hot and stuffy that the air was almost frozen. Everyone's breathing became rapid, and the car was filled with an indescribable smell. However, in such an environment, we all remained silent tacitly, no one complained, and no one spoke.
I secretly thanked myself that the windows of this "stuffy car" were sealed, so the traffic police could not see what was going on inside. Otherwise, such overloading would definitely be fined once entering the city. But even so, such a journey made me feel exhausted and miserable. I prayed silently, hoping that this journey would end as soon as possible.
Just as I was twisting my body and half squatting to endure the stuffiness and discomfort, suddenly, a loud "bang" broke the silence in the car. Then, a burst of angry curses rang out: "Fuck you, Erdan? Your fart was so strong that it hit me on the head! What did you eat this morning? Your fart is so smelly!"
I couldn't believe my ears. This scene was so funny. I secretly complained in my heart, how can I live like this? Next time, even if I leave a little later, I will never take this kind of "stuffy car" again.
It would be fine if I didn't mention farting, but once I mentioned it, I suddenly felt my nose become more sensitive. The car was already stuffy and smelly, and now it was filled with all kinds of disgusting smells - foot odor, sour sweat... All kinds of smells intertwined together, making it impossible to breathe.
In this agony, the car suddenly stopped with a "squeak". Due to inertia, we all rushed forward, and then fell backward. The guy in front of me hit my big toe hard before he could stand still. The pain almost made me want to scream, but someone's elbow pressed against my chest, so I couldn't scream.
At this time, not only did my feet hurt, but my waist seemed to be really twisted, and my legs also hurt a lot. I gritted my teeth and endured the pain, waiting for the moment when the car door opened. Finally, with a "click", the car door opened. I felt relieved and quickly squeezed out of the car.
After getting off the bus, I stretched my waist and luckily it was not a big problem. After saying goodbye to Master Li, I quickly looked for a bus to take home. Although this experience made me suffer a lot, it also made me deeply realize the difficulty of life.
