The programmer and his woman
Chapter 74 School Canteen
The breeze in the morning was a little cool. I hurriedly finished my breakfast and boarded the bus to school. Today is a special day because I will lead a brand new class and start the journey of a new semester. I am full of expectations, but also a little nervous, after all, each class has its own unique atmosphere and challenges.
The moment I stepped into the classroom, I looked around and found that the students' faces were so strange and curious. I took a deep breath and started the morning class. However, as the course progressed, I gradually found that the students in this class generally had a weak foundation, and some students even only completed secondary school. This made me feel a little frustrated, because I knew that with such a foundation, it would not be easy for them to keep up with the progress in the subsequent studies.
I couldn't help but think of my previous school, where the admissions system was relatively strict, with a simple entrance test, and only qualified students could be admitted. Although such a system was strict, it ensured that students had a relatively consistent foundation in their studies, making teaching smoother. However, the school in front of me was completely different. It seemed to value economic benefits more. As long as the students paid the tuition, they would be admitted regardless of their foundation.
Faced with this reality, I can't help but feel a little helpless. I know that as a teacher, my duty is to try my best to teach every student, no matter what their foundation is. However, such a gap in foundation does bring me a great challenge. I need to spend more time and energy to help them make up for the foundation, while also ensuring that the course progress is not delayed.
I was just thinking about my own things when I heard someone outside the classroom shouting, "Oh no! Oh no! Teacher Shen is fighting with a student in the class."
I had just finished my morning classes and was about to take a break when I heard a commotion in the corridor. I walked over curiously and saw a shocking scene unfold before my eyes.
A tall student grabbed Teacher Shen's hair with both hands and pressed down hard, forcing Teacher Shen into a 90-degree bow. Then, he raised his foot without hesitation and kicked Teacher Shen in the face. After a few kicks, blood flowed from Teacher Shen's face. Seeing this, the surrounding students and teachers stepped forward and tried to separate the two.
The student kicked and roared: "Damn it, let you say it again! I kicked your mouth to pieces this time so that you will remember it. If you say it again next time, I will kill you!" His eyes were full of anger and hatred, as if he wanted to put Teacher Shen to death.
At this moment, the principal rushed over after hearing the news. He loudly ordered the people around to take the two away. Teacher Shen was helped away, while the student was held by two security guards, his face full of dissatisfaction and anger.
I walked over to Teacher Wen and asked her curiously, "Teacher Wen, do you know what happened?"
Teacher Wen shook his head, indicating that he didn't know. At this time, a fat art teacher next to him interrupted and said, "I just happened to pass by and saw everything. Speaking of Teacher Shen, he is always rude and likes to criticize students, saying that they are stupid and foolish. I have seen him criticize students like this more than once. This time, he may have made the student angry and hit him."
She paused for a moment and continued, "This Mr. Shen always likes to criticize others. I think he will get into trouble sooner or later."
I asked in surprise: "But it's noon now, how could something happen?"
The art teacher was stunned for a moment, then suddenly seemed to understand something, and said with disdain: "Hey, Teacher Wang, why is your brain circuit different from that of normal people?"
"Haha, I'm not going to joke with you anymore. I'm going to eat." I said.
At this time, a student from our class came over and invited enthusiastically: "Teacher Wang, where are you going to eat? How about we go together?"
"Okay, let's go together. I just arrived at this school too, and I don't know where to eat nearby. Do you know any places to eat?" I asked the two students.
"I know!" Another student next to him answered, "There is a cafeteria in the school. Come on, I'll take you there."
I said in surprise: "Ah? This school has a cafeteria? This is the first time I heard of it."
I thought it would be best if there was a cafeteria, so I wouldn't have to look for restaurants everywhere. So I followed the two students into what they called the "cafeteria", and my first impression was that it was very different from my previous impression of school cafeterias. I had imagined that the traditional school cafeteria should have rows of neat tables and a self-service way of picking up food, but the scene in front of me left me a little confused.
This so-called "canteen" is more like the canteen in the maternal and child health care hospital I used to go to. It is spacious but undecorated, giving people a rustic and slightly shabby feeling. Although it has some characteristics of a restaurant, such as a cash register and waiters delivering food, the overall atmosphere is different from that of a restaurant, lacking the unique bustle and prosperity.
I can't help but think that this student may have misunderstood the word "canteen". This place doesn't seem to have a direct relationship with the school, but it seems to have some connection with this three-story building. Maybe the staff and students in this building sometimes patronize this place, which makes it called "canteen" by students.
Looking around, I found that the business of this "canteen" was not as prosperous as I imagined. It was lunchtime, but apart from our table, there was only one other table of guests in the entire "canteen". I couldn't help but feel a little surprised by the desertedness.
I picked up the menu and flipped through a few pages. I found that the prices were not expensive, which was somewhat beyond my expectation. While flipping through the menu, I asked, "My dear classmates, how do we eat?"
The student with a Beijing accent suggested enthusiastically, "Then let's each order one dish and mix them together later. This way we can taste three different dishes. Doesn't that sound good?"
I smiled and nodded, "Yeah, okay, that's a good idea." In fact, I thought so in my heart. After all, ordering one dish alone may not be enough, and mixing them together allows me to try more flavors.
I glanced at the menu and was attracted by a dish of fried prawns. The price was affordable, only two yuan per prawn, so I decided: "Then I'll order the fried prawns first. Next, it's your turn."
The two students discussed for a while and ordered two dishes that looked quite delicious.
After a while, the fried prawns I ordered were served. When the plate was placed on the table, I was shocked by the size of the fried prawns. Hey, the size of the prawns is really big, it can be said to be a "giant".
However, when I looked closely, I found something wrong. My hometown is a coastal city, seafood is my favorite, what kind of shrimp have I not seen? But why does this shrimp look so strange today? Although it is wrapped in thick batter, it can be seen from the appearance that this thing does not seem to be a shrimp. I frowned and tried to search for the memory of this creature in my mind, but unfortunately, there is no record of this creature in my knowledge base. I hesitated and did not dare to move my chopsticks.
"Teacher Wang, the dishes are here, let's eat first." A classmate greeted enthusiastically.
I pointed to the fried prawns on the plate and asked in confusion, "Classmate, don't you think these prawns look a little strange?"
The student from City A listened to me, put down his chopsticks, and carefully examined the fried prawns on the plate. He frowned and muttered, "Hey, don't tell me, there is something wrong."
Another classmate came over to take a look, a confused look on his face.
"Oh, what's wrong? Aren't these just prawns? If you two don't eat them, I will eat them all." The classmate who had been very casual before was now impatiently picking up the chopsticks to pick up the prawns.
I hesitated for a moment, but finally gave up trying this strange fried prawn and said, "Whoever you like can have it. I'll wait for other dishes."
At this time, another dish was served, a meat dish. The three of us took a bite and tasted it, but the taste disappointed us greatly.
"It's so disgusting!" The student from City A put down his chopsticks first, frowning.
I took a bite and couldn't help but frowning, "I'm not used to this dish."
"Teacher Wang, you don't want to eat this dish?" the student asked.
I smiled and said, "Hey, it's true that I'm a little uncomfortable with the taste."
"Come on, why don't you come and eat the dish I ordered with me later?" the student from City A invited me enthusiastically. I nodded, secretly feeling lucky that I could try the dish he ordered.
We were chatting when the vegetarian shredded potato he ordered was finally served. I looked closely and saw the golden shredded potato mixed with emerald green onions, the color was tempting.
"Come, Teacher Wang, try the dish I ordered." He invited me enthusiastically.
I picked up a piece of potato shreds with chopsticks and put them in my mouth. I felt the sweetness and refreshing taste while chewing. I couldn't help but nod and praise: "Well, this dish is really good."
"Come on, let's change seats and eat this dish together. Let him enjoy the other two dishes alone," he suggested.
So we quickly changed seats and moved the other two dishes in front of that classmate. He looked at the delicacies in front of him and smiled from ear to ear: "Hey, that's great, I'm in for a treat today."
"Look how pretty he is." The student from City A teased him, then turned to me and said, "Teacher Wang, I tell you, you've only just arrived in City A. In a restaurant like this, it's best not to order meat dishes, because you don't know what they put in them. Remember, in the future, just order vegetarian dishes like I did. Stir-fried shredded potatoes, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, etc. Anyway, look at the price of the dish, if it's cheap, choose vegetarian dishes. The cost of the dish is low, so the boss can make some money, and he won't put anything else in it."
He paused and continued, "Think about it. How much does he have to pay for rent for such a big store every month? There are so few customers at noon. If he doesn't make a fuss about the food, how can he make money? Therefore, ordering vegetarian dishes is the safest choice."
I suddenly realized what was going on and couldn't help but marvel at the thoughtfulness and wit of this classmate. I asked him, "Classmate, your accent sounds like that of a local, right?"
"Yes, that's right. I live nearby," he replied.
"Oh, then you live very close to home. Why don't you go home to eat?" I asked curiously.
"No one is home at noon. If someone is cooking, I won't eat out." He explained, "But the portion of shredded potatoes here is quite large. It should be enough for the two of us."
At this moment, an unknown creature suddenly flashed before my eyes. It flew across the table in front of me at such a speed that I could hardly react. I screamed, "What the hell?"
The student from City A seemed to be used to it. He looked at me calmly and said with a smile, "Teacher Wang, you haven't seen this before, have you?"
I shook my head in confusion, "Huh? What is this?"
He explained: "This is a cockroach. It must be very hungry. Usually, it rarely comes out to look for food during the day."
"Xiao Qiang?" I repeated, feeling confused.
He added: "It's cockroaches, the kind that hide in the gutter every day. They reproduce very well, if one or two of them enter a house, they can breed a whole house of them in a few days. They are also very dirty, full of germs, and disgusting."
I suddenly understood, nodded and said, "Oh, I have heard of cockroaches, but this is the first time I have seen one today."
He continued, "Teacher Wang, now you know why I asked you to order only vegetarian dishes, right? Have you finished your meal?"
I nodded, "I'm done."
He smiled mysteriously, "Would you like to see that thing again?"
I looked at him in confusion, "Ah? How come?"
He pointed at the table and said, "Look." He gently lifted a corner of the table with his hand, and then a group of cockroaches ran out of the table and fled everywhere. Seeing this scene, I almost vomited the food I had just eaten.
I quickly waved my hands and said, "Ouch, that's enough, stop it. This is too disgusting."
Another classmate, who still had food in his mouth, also shouted: "Are you sick? I haven't finished my meal yet, and you made so many of these things. Are you going to let me eat?"
The student from City A seemed a little proud. He smiled and responded, "I thought you weren't disgusted by this thing?"
The classmate retorted: "Who doesn't feel disgusted by this? It's everywhere. What can we do about it? Just try not to think about it. Who is like you? You want to get rid of the cockroaches even though they are lying peacefully in their nests?"
The student from City A quickly apologized: "Oh, sorry for what I have done. You've almost finished your meal. You've eaten the meal for two people. Look, we only have one serving. I was afraid you'd be too full."
The classmate chuckled and said, "What do you know? I'll eat more at noon and save the dinner."
The classmate from City A joked, "Well, I was wondering how you could eat so much but still be so skinny, I guess you must have starved yourself to death."
I smiled and shook my head, then turned to him and asked curiously, "Hey classmate, where are you from?"
He replied, "Teacher Wang, I came from Province H."
I asked curiously, "Why did you come all the way here to study?"
He sighed and said, "They told me that after I finish my studies here, I can stay in City A and find a high-paying job, so I came. But life here is harder than in my hometown. I can only go out to bask in the sun when I come to school, and the dormitories arranged by the school are all dark."
