Matthews followed Caron to the most lively place in the city of Carnia - the slave market. For the first time, he witnessed the dark side of the world - the existence of slavery.

Kalon explained to him that this market was a gathering place for people from different regions and cultural backgrounds, where all kinds of slaves were bought and sold. Some of them were criminals from distant regions, while others were prisoners of war, and each of them had a different story and destiny.

The slave market is a bustling and diverse trading place in the city of Carnia, attracting all kinds of characters: merchants, buyers, intermediaries and ordinary citizens, each with their own intentions. The lives of slaves are completely controlled by their masters, and they are exhibited in the market like commodities for people to choose. Buyers have various needs, some are landowners looking for cheap labor, some are craftsmen who need specific skills, and some are nobles seeking to satisfy personal desires.

As they approached the slave market, Caron reminded Matthews: "Master, the crowd here is quite complex, so you need to pay special attention to your personal safety and protect your property. Although I will observe the surroundings carefully, please do not take it lightly."

As soon as Matthews stepped into the slave market, he was surrounded by a clamor: the cries of vendors, the cries of slaves, the bargaining of buyers and the whispers of onlookers intertwined to form a chaotic and noisy atmosphere. The air was filled with an unpleasant smell, mixed with the pungent smell of feces and food, which made people frown.

The slaves were tightly bound by heavy chains, and their tattered clothes could hardly hide the mottled marks left on their skin by the sun and hard work. In their eyes, fatigue, dullness and despair were intertwined, as if they had become accustomed to this endless suffering. However, at certain moments, their eyes would also flash with a desire for freedom, a yearning for the unknown world, and an expectation of breaking free from bondage.

The voices of slave traders echoed throughout the market, and they boasted about the slaves' various specialties and skills as if they were displaying goods. Their voices were sharp and piercing, as if to attract the attention of every potential buyer. Some of these slaves were skilled craftsmen, whose hands seemed to be endowed with magical powers, able to create breathtaking works of art; some were strong laborers, whose muscles were strong and powerful, able to undertake the heaviest work; and some were even young children, who may not have grown up yet, but have already demonstrated unique gifts and talents.

Buyers walked through the crowd, with scrutinizing expressions on their faces, carefully looking at each slave. They evaluated the value of the slaves with a critical eye and asked various questions about them. They were concerned about the slaves' age, health, past work experience, and even their birthplace and family background. In this process, some buyers might sympathize with the slaves' plight, but more people regarded them as commodities, focusing only on the practicality they could bring.

This scene makes people feel deeply heartbroken and helpless. The fate of the slaves is ruthlessly manipulated by others, and their value is simply reduced to labor and commodities. In this cruel market, the glory of human nature seems to have been covered up, replaced by endless greed and indifference.

The slave market was a soul-shaking experience for Matthews. He was deeply moved as he wandered through the hustle and bustle of the market and witnessed the slaves' struggle to survive. The suffering and helplessness of these slaves made him feel extremely sympathetic, while also giving him a deeper understanding of the cruel realities of the world.

At the auction area, a little boy was brought to the front. He was dressed in rags, his hair was messy, and the slave mark on his forehead revealed his identity. Although his appearance was shabby, his skin was still fair.

The slave trader began to brag about the little boy: "This is a treasure I found. He was once the son of a noble, but because his family offended the powerful, all the adult males in his family were executed, leaving only a few girls and him as slaves. Those girls have been bought, and as for him, look at his skin, how pure it is, which proves his past wealthy life. Make an offer now, the starting price is only one gold coin, this opportunity is rare!"

Matthews became interested in the little boy and was about to make an offer, but was stopped by Caron. Caron whispered to Matthews: "Master, these slaves from noble families are not valuable, usually not more than two silver coins. They are used to a comfortable life, have no labor skills, poor work efficiency, and are difficult to manage because they are too thoughtful. After buying them, it takes a lot of time and energy to train and supervise them, and they may also run away or betray. Therefore, few people bid to buy these slaves, and only mines will accept them. In the mines, if they do not work hard, they will suffer severe punishment, and their final fate is often death."

Matthews quickly became alert and realized that the original bidder's intention was to lure him into the game. Although his mind had matured, as a newcomer to the alien world, he still almost fell into the trap. After realizing it, the surprise on his face quickly faded, replaced by an indifferent expression.

The slave trader on the auction table cast an inquiring look, as if he was still waiting for Matthews to raise the price. However, Matthews had seen through the other party's trick and would not be fooled again. He remained calm and did not respond. In the end, the gold coin became the only bid in the audience.

Matthews decided to continue his inspection of the slave market. However, the slave trader from before suddenly hurriedly came up to him with the little boy and said eagerly: "Young noble, please stay and consider this slave. I am willing to sell it to you at the extremely low price of two silver coins, which is the lowest price in the market."

The slave trader knew clearly that Caron was a veteran in the market, so he did not dare to ask for an exorbitant price. But seeing that Matthews remained unmoved, he added: "Otherwise, he will be sent to the mines, where death awaits him."

At first, Matthews was just a little curious about this slave of noble descent, after all, he had never seen anyone in such a situation. But now, he remembered a proverb from another world: "Curiosity kills the cat." He took a deep breath and realized that he should not be driven by unnecessary curiosity and fall into unnecessary trouble.
