The legendary woman who was reborn from the ashes
Chapter 21 The Ten Thousand Hour Rule
I believe everyone has heard of the 1-hour rule, which means that as long as we persist in spending time doing something, we will definitely be able to master it.
This law originated from a Danish psychologist who found that any skill or project can be transformed from mediocre to outstanding with 1 hours of focused practice.
The 1-hour rule applies to a wide range of people, whether musicians, athletes, writers, painters, or ordinary people who do the same job day after day. As long as they can continue to invest time and energy to improve their skills, they will eventually get the corresponding rewards.
The key to this law is deliberate practice, which means constantly looking for opportunities to challenge your limits and overcome your shortcomings.
The 1-hour rule does not mean that we will succeed as long as we practice for 1 hours. Rather, it means that by constantly accumulating experience, we can improve our skills and cognitive level and achieve better results.
Similarly, if you are good at something and are willing to spend time doing it, then you will definitely get the corresponding rewards.
If you want to succeed in your career or life, then start now and invest time and energy in deliberate practice. Believe that as long as you keep working hard, you will be able to realize your dreams.
In 1993, Professor Anders of Miami University conducted a survey at a top music school in Berlin. He divided the students into three groups: ordinary students, excellent students, and outstanding students.
All students were asked the same question: How many hours have you practiced since you started practicing piano? All students started practicing piano at around 5 years old, and in the first few years, everyone practiced for almost the same amount of time - about 2 to 3 hours a week.
但到了8岁左右,差别开始显现出来。一些学生的练习时间开始多于其他学生:9岁的时候每周6小时,12岁的时候每周8小时,14岁的时候每周16小时,20岁的时候每周超过30个小时。
By the age of 20, students with the potential to become world-class performers have practiced 1 hours; "averagely good" students have practiced 8 hours; and those who cannot reach professional standards and can only hope to become music teachers in the future have practiced only 4 hours.
Ericsson was surprised to find that there was no innate genius among the outstanding people. If there was not enough time for practice, no one could become a successful musician. He wrote this discovery into a paper titled "The Role of Purposeful Training in the Cultivation of Professional Talents".
The reason why geniuses are so extraordinary in people's eyes is not because of their superior talents, but because of their continuous efforts. 1 hours of training is a necessary condition for anyone to go from ordinary to world-class masters. This is the famous "-hour rule".
1 hours is equivalent to practicing for 3 hours a day, which lasts for about 10 years in total. Even the "geniuses" in our eyes cannot skip this process.
Superior IQ and innate talent are not the key to determining whether a person becomes an industry elite. Those who eventually climb to the top, no matter what kind of boring, difficult, and tiring practice they face, will pay a price far beyond ordinary people to reach the other side of their hearts, and will never feel satisfied.
Mozart's early works, before he really became a professional composer, were not outstanding. Most of his works from his childhood, such as the seven piano and orchestra concertos, were completed with the help of other composers, especially his father, and were constantly revised thereafter.
The Piano Concerto No. 21 was written entirely by Mozart himself, completed in one go with almost no revisions, and is regarded as his first classic work. This work was composed when Mozart was 10 years old, after he had been practicing composition for a full years.
After Mozart turned 20, he completed one masterpiece after another with astonishing speed and ease.
All this is based on his diligence. At the age of 14, he studied "The Art of Arithmetic" and "The Art of Computation and Algebra".
This experience cultivated his image thinking of mathematical logic, and based on this, he conducted a lot of counterpoint analysis and research on the compositions of other musicians. After his death, people also found that he had 46 books in his collection, including poetry collections, plays, theories of composition techniques, and philosophical treatises. He never gave up his thirst for knowledge until his death.
Mozart once said: "People think that my art comes without effort. In fact, no one composes music with so much time and thought as I do; there is no famous composer whose work I have not studied many times with great diligence."
There was an ordinary college student who had no outstanding talent or amazing background. However, he had a firm belief, which was the "10,000-hour rule".
This law means that in order to become an expert in a certain field, one needs to invest at least 10,000 hours in learning and practicing. The college student firmly believes that as long as he puts in enough effort, he will be able to succeed.
So, during the four years of college, the young man devoted himself to study. He got up early and went to bed late every day, either in the library or in the laboratory. He kept reading, doing experiments, and writing papers without stopping for a moment. His classmates said he was a madman, but he enjoyed it.
However, the reality was not as smooth as he imagined. His grades were always mediocre, and his papers were never published. He began to doubt his abilities and beliefs, and even doubted the authenticity of the 10,000-hour rule.
Just when he was about to give up, his teacher told him that the 10,000-hour rule is not a simple mathematical formula, but a spiritual force.
It tells us that as long as we work hard, we will succeed. But it does not mean that we can become an expert as long as we invest 10,000 hours, because the road to success also requires the right direction and method.
The young man listened to the teacher and re-examined his study and life. He found that although he had invested a lot of time, he did not really master the skills and methods of learning. So he began to change his learning methods and seek more help and guidance.
After a period of hard work, the young man's grades began to improve significantly. His papers were also published in academic journals. He felt that he was gradually on the road to success.
After graduating from university, the young man became an excellent researcher. He knew that this journey was inseparable from his own efforts and persistence, and even more inseparable from the inspiration and guidance of the 10,000-hour rule.
He believes that as long as he continues to persevere, the road ahead will be broader and brighter.
The above stories tell us that the 10,000-hour rule is not a simple mathematical formula, but a spiritual force. As long as we work hard and persevere, we will surely succeed.
At the same time, we also need to constantly reflect on and adjust our direction and methods in order to better move towards success.
Are there really geniuses? No one can deny that people with extraordinary talents and intelligence can achieve twice the result with half the effort compared to ordinary people. No success can be achieved by talent alone.
True geniuses are the ones who realize their full potential through hard work and endurance of loneliness.
A genius is someone who can constantly push himself into the pursuit of perfection, and in the process of constantly training himself, he can tap into more energy and talent. Their greatest gift is not talent itself, but strict self-discipline and high-intensity efforts.
Just imagine, if we push the opportunity to work hard to tomorrow after tomorrow, we will never be able to bring out our talents. Only when we are unwilling to give up, will there be a volcanic eruption.
Behind all great achievements, talent seems insignificant compared to the hard work, sweat and loneliness endured day and night.
Anyone who wants to reach the top in every industry has to climb mountains and cross rivers alone.
Every person who has gone from being ordinary to being outstanding has endured loneliness, pushed himself to the brink of despair time and time again, and unremittingly pursued perfection, thus creating the miracles we have witnessed.
Every unique and great achievement is actually based on extremely lonely diligence, either blood, sweat, or lots of wonderful youthful time.
