Fire brings light, but there are no gods in the world of Dark Souls. To be precise, gods are not immortal, they are fragile and dependent on fire.

In this setting, fire is similar to the existence of resources in nature, such as water, plants, minerals, etc. It will be produced and exhausted, over and over again.

With the appearance of fire, human-shaped creatures appeared in the world. Some creatures discovered fire, gained powerful strength from it, and became kings (not gods yet).

There are four beings who have gained power: Gwyn mastered the power of thunder and lightning and was called the Sun King.

The first dead, Nito, mastered the power to dominate death and was called the Tomb King.

The witch Izalith masters the power of fire and also has the soul of a king but is not king (the fire here is only a flame of power, not the original fire of creation).

There is also a dwarf that no one knows about. No one knows what power he has obtained. He is the king with the least information in the original game.

He also does not have the king's soul power placed in the king's weapon, but through the DLC we can know that he has mastered the dark soul, that is, human nature.

This dwarf is the ancestor of mankind. The reason why he is called a dwarf is relative to the heights of the first three, because the former are relatively tall, basically giants.

Due to the emergence of new races, the status of the immortal ancient dragons that once dominated the world was shaken, and differences led to war.

The first three of the four kings began to fight against the immortal dragons. But the knights led by King Gwyn suffered heavy losses because the ancient dragons had immortal dragon scales and were difficult to defeat.

Among the ancient dragons there exists an alien species, a scaleless white dragon named Hiss.

It does not possess dragon breath like other ancient dragons, but it possesses the power of crystallization.

(It can be seen from the library and crystal caves in the back, but since it is not explained in the opening animation, it is also considered to be a kind of magic mastered after receiving Gwyn's soul.)

Since it has no scales, it is destined not to be immortal, and is rejected by the ancient dragons as an alien.

In addition, the white dragon also longed for the power of the soul of the king born in fire, so it chose to betray the ancient dragons and told King Gwyn the secret of the ancient dragons' immortal dragon scales.

So the world was changed, Gwyn and his knights condensed lightning spears to destroy the ancient dragon's scales.

The Nito released a death miasma that corroded the ancient dragon's naked body, while the witch Izalith and her followers used fire storms to burn the towering ancient trees where the ancient dragon lived.

The ancient dragons perished, and only some of their incomplete bloodlines remained in the world, such as the ancient giant snake, the flying dragon, the seven-headed giant snake, and the dying rotten dragon whose body was corroded by miasma and had lost the ability to fly and use fire.

The kings who exterminated the ancient dragons became gods, and the world entered an era ruled by gods, the Age of Fire.

In this era, the kings (gods) represented by Gwyn, the Sun King (the gods here are seen by humans in later generations) created a glorious civilization (represented by Anor Londo, the Sun King's City), and multiplied and thrived.

King Gwyn led his Silver Knights out to spread the fire, spreading the power and light of fire to every corner of the world.

In the long years that followed, the disappeared fourth king became the ancestor of mankind, began to live in the world, and revered the ancient kings as gods.

Their deeds have become myths and legends, faith has created miracles, and mankind lives under the protection of God.

Countless long years passed, and the world changed dramatically.

Finally, the initial fire began to dim and gradually went out.

Because the power of the king comes from fire, the civilization they create and continue with this power also consumes fire. When the power of the flame is exhausted, it will go out, and the world will once again usher in darkness.

That is, when resources are exhausted, civilization will cease to exist.

The three kings adopted different approaches to deal with this situation.

Gwyn finally chose to set himself on fire, igniting himself in the furnace of the First Fire, burning his powerful soul as the king in order to keep the flames burning.

This approach is actually very correct, that is, to return the power of fire to fire, which has some flavor of returning farmland to forest.

Unfortunately, Gwyn was only one of the four kings, and his soul was separated into two parts (given to the white dragon Seath and the four kings of Anor Londo respectively, which is a later story). It was really a drop in the bucket and could only delay but not stop the invasion of darkness.

Tomb King Nito is dead himself (compared to the living, which is different from the ignorant state of the original chaotic era where there was no life or death.)

They do not yearn for light, nor have they created their own civilization.

It can be seen from the fact that there is basically no light in the Great Cemetery and the Giant Cemetery that the realm of death under Nito's rule is unusually quiet, so the consumption of the power of the First Fire is not obvious.

Nit himself lay directly in the coffin and slept forever, silently waiting for the end of time. This approach is not bad, it is very close to the original dark chaos.

Just like Lao Tzu's Taoist theory, it is closest to nature and governs by inaction.

But the old witch was not as open-minded as the first two.

The reason why she is called the old witch is because she has many daughters (little witches).

She discovered that the original fire came from chaos, so she wanted to use the power of the king's soul in her body to combine with chaos to create an original fire again.

This is just like when scientists learned that the origin of the universe was the Big Bang, they began to study how to utilize the energy released by nuclear fusion. It is a suicidal behavior.

As expected, this dangerous chemical experiment eventually got out of control, and the combination of chaos and fire power eventually devoured the old witch, making her a hotbed for incubating chaos, and thus the oldest demon was born (the ancient demon BOSS of the Demon Ruins).

Demons appeared at an insane speed. Minotaur demons, goat-headed demons and terrifying chaos worm-like creatures were born one after another and began to erode the world.

Even the old witch's children could not escape the fate of being corrupted by Chaos (this is a story for later).

Here we actually have sufficient reasons to believe that the Sun King Group, which serves as the guardian of world order, once fought a brutal war with the demons.

The war spread to every corner of the world. Since the source of power came from the primordial fire, the battle should end with both sides suffering losses.

The fierceness of the battle back then can be vaguely seen from the armor of the silver knights wandering on the continent that was burned black by the devil's fire and the weapons in the hands of scattered demons that still exude a bloody smell (this is a story for later).

In short, the struggles of the three kings did not fundamentally solve the problem, and the darkness continued to spread.

Then the undead carrying the ring of darkness appeared (the reason for the appearance of the undead is actually the ultimate reason and result of this series of games, so I won’t discuss it here.)

Now all we need to understand is that the appearance of the undead is due to the extinction of the First Fire and the spread of darkness.

No matter how many times an undead person dies, he will be resurrected in the fire as long as he does not lose his faith.

Once the undead lose their faith, they will become hollow zombies, unconsciously craving for souls and attacking other living beings.

In the world view of Dark Souls, the world is illuminated by "fire".

Once the fire is about to go out, a person with a strong soul is needed to turn himself into firewood and throw it into the furnace to keep the fire going. This kind of person is called the "Fire King".

Due to various reasons, by the time of Dark Souls 3, the fire was about to go out, but there was no Lord of Fire to pass on the flame.

Then, the "bell" was rung, awakening the ancient fire kings, hoping that they would burn themselves once again.

However, the Fire Kings who had passed on the fire once were unwilling to devote themselves again for their own reasons and left the throne one after another, leaving the cause of passing on the fire in jeopardy.

At this time, the protagonists of the story - the fireless ashes (emeralds) appeared on the stage. They were heroes who had passed on fire once, which also made them unable to become firewood themselves, and they had an instinctive desire for the embers.
