Be in low spirits

Chapter 51: Missing Victim

During the meal, Kong Zhixi felt a little worried. Looking at Li Li's expression, she couldn't understand why his mind was full of his pitiful love experience. "Are you... hiding something from me?"

"Well, I bought you some milk tea. Drink it after dinner. It's a little cold." He had been busy all morning and had not had time to shave. There were four dishes and a soup on the table. It was a bit of a waste for two people to eat it.

He answered irrelevantly, and Kong Zhixi probably guessed the reason. "You can tell me when you want to." She didn't want to force him, but with this neck, it was difficult for her to eat the four dishes and one soup.

Li Li looked at her, wanting to say something but stopping himself, then walked over to her, put some food in her bowl, and began to feed her mouthful by mouthful. "Did you guess it?" Li Li knew that this was not a solution.

"I'll do it myself." Kong Zhixi picked up the bowl. "Jia Jia told me that her father wanted to go to the school to argue with them because he found that some of the materials used in the school's outsourced projects were substandard. He never came home after that. All kinds of rumors have spread in the village. Also, I've met her grandmother. She will come to the police station to ask about the case."

"Do you remember?" Li Li sighed.

"Do you know this case?" Kong Zhixi thought he had remembered it too. Li Li shook his head and she did not continue. In the afternoon, Li Li went to the police station. Kong Zhixi felt bored and fell asleep on the sofa. She had become more and more sleepy recently.

When she woke up at around 4pm, it was still daylight. She was bored, so she went downstairs and took a taxi to find Cheng Xi. Cheng Xi's attitude towards her became increasingly unfriendly.

"Brother Li won't be with you?" It is always said that when rivals meet, they are particularly jealous of each other, but Kong Zhixi always felt that she was the third party and she did nothing wrong.

"He's at the police station, go about his business." Kong Zhixi wore a neck brace and was pointed at all the way here, but she was used to it since this B&B wasn't welcoming her anyway.

"I came here to ask you about the memories in reality." Kong Zhixi only wanted to ask what she wanted to know.

"Kong Zhixi, you don't really think that you and Brother Li can go back together, do you?" This time she came clean and no longer acted like the innocent girl next door.

The tea in the cup was steaming. That was Kong Zhixi's favorite thing to watch, but now she had lost her former energy and spirit. "Cheng Xi, I never thought of snatching your brother Li away. Although I don't know why I married him, I still want to apologize to you."

"This is the order of appearance in life. It's normal to have regrets, but I don't believe that his feelings for you are far greater than mine." Her words made Kong Zhixi feel that the originally dim guesthouse had become warmer.

"So, you understand." Kong Zhixi nodded, and the white smoke coming out of the cup of tea finally smelled like fireworks.

"Do you know how many obsessions in this city are waiting for their end? Their days are endless. Brother Li didn't force you to think about the past, which means he wanted to keep you here." She looked very elegant while making tea.

"I know." Kong Zhixi took a sip of tea. It was no longer sour like last time, but had the fragrance of jasmine.

"You know? Since you know, why don't you care?" Cheng Xi was a little confused by her. She didn't seem to care about this relationship.

"Love is not everything in life. I just want to know whether I should go back and how to go back." Kong Zhixi feels that she is an indifferent person at heart. For her, survival is her instinct.

Cheng Xi smiled. She originally thought that she could just wait for this obsession, but now it seems that even if she waits, she won’t be able to wait. This Kong Zhixi has never cared about her brother Li. She has lost completely.

Her sudden tears caught Kong Zhixi off guard. She didn't know what she said wrongly to make her cry like this. If others saw it, they would think she had hit someone. "You... don't do this. If others see it, they will think I bullied you." She was a little restless.

"What do you want to ask?" Cheng Xi wiped her tears and thought it didn't matter. If she went back and Li Li stayed here alone, she might still have a chance.

"I...I just want to ask, is there any pattern or method in the way everyone remembers reality?" Although she wiped away her tears, Kong Zhixi was still uneasy when she asked this question.

“It’s different, but there is a pattern.”

"Is it possible that different memories are found in different ways?"

"No, but there is a possibility that if you don't want to remember something during your lifetime, you may not be able to remember it after you die." The tea was now cold and no longer steaming.

Kong Zhixi fell into deep thought. Li Li had never thought about the case at all. Doesn't that mean that everything he experienced in the police station during his lifetime was something he didn't want to recall?

It was almost 6 o'clock at this time. Li Li called her and asked her to wait while he answered the phone.

"You're injured and you're still running around." He started to get angry when he got here. Kong Zhixi knew she was in the wrong and didn't dare to reply. "Sister-in-law is just bored, don't be angry." Cheng Xi advised from the side. She probably had never seen him so angry before, and her voice was trembling a little.

"If she comes to your place again, remember to call me first." He softened a little towards Cheng Xi.

On the way back, Li Li had a gloomy face. Kong Zhixi stammered and complained, "I didn't do anything wrong. Why are you so angry?"

"What do you think?" He honked the horn twice in anger, and the electric cars on the road quickly gave way. Kong Zhixi pursed her lips and stopped talking. Although she didn't know what he was angry about, it was the first time she saw such a look on his face.

After two days of cold war, Kong Zhixi stayed at home quietly. On the third day, she was really worried about Jiajia while having breakfast. She thought that she would sneak out after he went to the police station. Before leaving, Li Li warned her: "Don't run around. I will take you to the hospital to remove the neck brace at noon today." Kong Zhixi nodded and said, "Yes." She looked well-behaved.

Finally, Li Li was still a little worried, so he pressed his head and kissed her hard, saying, "If you run around, you'll be punished." Kong Zhixi nodded again. Half an hour after he left, Kong Zhixi went downstairs and took a taxi. She knew that these cases were not what Li Li wanted to remember. If she asked him to investigate together, it would probably take ten or half a month to finish.

When she got to the village, she took off the collar herself and twisted her neck. It was still a little stiff, but she could move freely. She walked a long way before she found Jiajia's house. No one was home. She knocked for a long time but no one answered. Kong Zhixi asked the neighbor next door. The neighbor said that he went to the city yesterday and had not returned yet. He did not say where he went.

Seeing that it was almost time, she quickly took a taxi back to the city and bought a few boxes of takeout. When she got home, Li Li was already sitting on the sofa, his face was dark and ugly. Kong Zhixi was so scared that she dropped the food on the ground and burned her feet. "Hiss." She shouted subconsciously. Li Li looked up and stood up to help. When he got close, Kong Zhixi took a step back. He sighed helplessly, took the mop and swept the floor clean. Kong Zhixi jumped to the sofa and sat down. Li Li took a towel to wipe her clean, blew on it, and said, "If you want to go out, just tell me. Is it difficult for me to go with you?"

"You... didn't want to hide it from me, too?" Kong Zhixi knew she couldn't confront him, so she could only suppress her complaints. Li Li stopped what he was doing after hearing this. "I didn't want to hide it from you, I just... I just felt that the time we spent together was too short."

"I just want to find out the truth of the matter." Kong Zhixi probably guessed his intention, but she didn't think she had done anything wrong.

Li Li got up and washed his hands, then found an ice pack to put on her. After a long time, he said, "Isn't this good? Three meals a day, four seasons for two people." He knew that this sounded a bit pretentious and selfish, so he didn't plan to tell her.

She didn't know if it was because her feet hurt from the burn or because the wound on her neck hadn't healed completely, but she suddenly felt sad. "You're not that kind of person at all."

Li Li smiled disdainfully, "What kind of person am I? I can't even remember, how do you know?"
