Li Xueyue followed Wen Jinkai hesitantly. They walked in pure silence, for which she was grateful, but it made her think. She couldn't help but think back to her discoveries. First, Li Minghua was still alive, and second, the one who wanted to kill her was the Queen.

Li Xueyue swallowed her saliva. If she was not mistaken... the queen was dead now. Li Xueyue knew that the royal family would be assassinated, but she did not expect it to be so direct. Moreover, who knocked her out? Who murdered the queen? Why did she wake up in the queen's bedroom? Did someone want to frame her for the queen's death?

There were so many questions without answers that Li Xueyue felt like her head was about to explode. The further she walked, the more anxious she became. Was someone out to catch her? Was this why they were framing her for the murder of the queen?

"Do I have enemies?" Li Xueyue thought to herself, and in a trance, she actually whispered it out loud.

"I don't know." Wen Jinkai replied. He looked down at her, then turned his gaze to the shadow guards behind him. They were taught to mind their own business. It was a pitiful thing. These guards were numb to any emotion, they only knew obedience and violence.

Wen Jinkai turned his attention elsewhere. Li Xueyue stared at the floor, absent-minded. He also had his own questions. What on earth was she doing near the Queen's corridor?

"Where are your parents? Why are you alone here?" Wen Jinkai asked her.

Li Xueyue looked up, unsure if she could trust him. Although he behaved like a decent man, there was something wrong with him. The circles under his eyes had darkened since she last saw him. And when his eyes met hers, they were strange. His smile lacked warmth. It was as if… he had given up on life.

"When was the last time you slept?" Li Xueyue asked suddenly. "Your eye bags make you look like a panda."

"Not everyone has time to put hundreds of layers of powder under their eyes," Wen Jinkai retorted, noticing that she quickly changed the subject.

Li Xueyue didn't bother to respond. She just stared straight ahead as the group of people walked quietly along the corridor.

"The emperor is dead."

Li Xueyue stopped immediately. She opened her eyes wide, surprised by the news. She raised her head and met Wen Jinkai's lifeless gaze.

Wen Jinkai gauged her reaction, wondering if she was involved. Her shocked expression looked real, but then again, she was a great actress. Her every move seemed calculated. He knew she wasn't stupid enough to walk around like a fool. Was she really confused by the information? Or had she anticipated the outcome?

"Then why are you here?" Li Xueyue whispered. "Shouldn't you be looking for the murderer who killed the emperor?"

"You ask an interesting question." Wen Jinkai said coldly.

As they passed a brightly lit lantern, Li Xueyue finally saw Wen Jinkai clearly. There was blood everywhere. His robes were soaked through, red enough to make people think it was their original color. His face and hands were also splattered with blood.

Why didn’t she smell it? Li Xueyue guessed that it was because her mind was too messy. Wasn’t the blood bothering him at all? When she stared at him again and saw his nonchalant expression, she found that it didn’t bother him at all.

"What is the Empire going to do now?" Li Xueyue asked.

"According to tradition, we will mourn the death of the emperor for at least a few weeks. Once that is over, the crown prince will resume his duties—" Wen Jinkai paused. Without warning, he let out a cruel laugh.

The terrifying sound made Li Xueyue shiver all over. It was colder than the wind in winter. She hugged her shoulders and felt goose bumps all over her body. "What's so funny?" she thought.

"Oh, by the way, the prince is dead." He deadpanned. "The rebels tonight knew the layout of the palace very well. Almost all the royal family members were massacred."

Li Xueyue was silent. She couldn’t even breathe after hearing the news. Was it true at that time…? If it was true that everyone was killed, and everyone before the Li family died, then it could only mean one thing: the dynasty was dead. This is the beginning of a new era in history.

Li Xueyue understood Wen Jinkai's melancholy look. His eyes were dead because he had lost everyone he cared about - he had lost his family. Her lips trembled. She felt sorry for him. His mother, his father, his closest friends, all disappeared overnight. He would never see them again.

Li Xueyue despised Wen Jinkai. But in the final analysis, she was still a human being. Her heart was kinder than she thought. She became emotional, but was unwilling to shed a tear for him.

"I'm sorry," was all she said.

Wen Jinkai looked at her reaction and smiled. Her sad expression almost made him believe that the real monster in the court was not the Li family, but the Li family. Power was what they wanted, and they got it in one fell swoop.

Of course, he was involved. He should have run to the emperor and stayed with the man to protect him. But he didn't. Because he wasn't the only one who saw the blur in the distance. He wasn't the only one who thought they saw Li Minghua.

In the chaos, he saw her face one last time. It was outside the throne room, and the moment was fleeting, but he chased. He chased the shadow that was moving faster than he could run. When he hit a dead end, he knew he had imagined it.

"Why are you sorry?" Wen Jinkai let out a dark laugh. "It's not like your family was killed tonight. Your parents will be safe, your brothers will be waiting for you at home, and when the dawn rises, it will be the beginning of the Le Dynasty."

Li Xueyue shook her head slowly. "I said sorry because I felt sorry for you."

A trace of gloom passed over Wen Jinkai's face. He turned around suddenly and almost caught her, but she dodged him.

"I've said everything I wanted to say." Li Xueyue pondered. "Whether it offends you or not, I don't care. You want to know the reason, so I'll tell you the truth."

Wen Jinkai gritted his teeth. He was frustrated by her words and that blank face. He had hoped that she would smile at him one last time. He could no longer remember the memory that she was not angry with him. No matter what he did or said, she would not be happy.

Seeing the pain flashing in his eyes, Li Xueyue tilted her head. Her pity for him grew stronger, but she couldn't sympathize with him. It wasn't her thing to do. After all, her family was the reason he left. But she could tell him a fact to cheer up his dull mood.

She smiled slowly. "Li Minghua is still alive."
