Li Xueyue then realized what a fool she was for not stopping at any of the other towns she saw along the way.

A few times, she saw signs pointing to different villages, but ever since her first encounter with Bandit Town, she was hesitant and didn't dare to go anywhere else except trying her best to go in the direction of Cold Sword Capital.

The rain was coming harder now, scraping at her skin like sharp arrows, and she finally realized the folly of her own paranoia.

"You scaredy cat," she chided herself.

If she had let go of her fear earlier and stopped at a small town, she wouldn't be trapped in this small cave, shivering.

Her teeth chattered from the cold. She had managed to start a fire in the howling wind, but now the flames were dwindling.

Li Xueyue had no other kindling to start a fire. The sticks outside the cave were soaked and were useless when thrown into the fire.

Black Moon snuggled quietly beside her. Poor thing. He was shivering with cold despite his fur coat. His huge body could not be warmed by such a pitiful fire.

"I'm sorry, Black Moon," she whispered, clasping one hand around her upper arm and petting her horse with the other.

He was already sitting cross-legged on the floor, but showed no signs of falling asleep any time soon.

Li Xueyue didn't expect the rain to fall so quickly. One minute it was drizzling, and the next minute, raindrops fell on them like cannonballs. She bit her lower lip as her stomach growled in protest.

"I should eat more before leaving the palace..." Li Xueyue muttered.

They had been traveling alone for at least a day now, and neither of them had eaten a proper meal. She wanted to eat some wild berries she found in the forest, but wasn't sure if they were safe to eat. What if they were poisonous?

But the spoiled Black Moon, who usually eats the best quality feed, is actually very well behaved.

Black Moon nibbled the grass in the forest to fill her stomach. She knew that eating grass was a favorite pastime of horses, but Black Moon was different.

Prior to this trip, the pampered horse refused to eat anything other than the premium blended food offered to him.

Li Xueyue reached into Heiyue's saddle, hoping to find something delicious for him. If she brought fruit, it would be better than nothing. When her fingers touched the edge of the coin inside, she was disappointed, and there was nothing else.

"A one-time sum of money can't solve my problem." Li Xueyue sighed.

She sneezed without warning, startling Heiyue, whose ears were on high alert from the sudden noise.

"It's just me." Li Xueyue sniffed. She continued to stroke his head until he went back to lie down.

"Oh no—" she gasped as the flames grew smaller than her hand.

She cursed under her breath and looked around for a source of fuel. Her eyes fell on her soaked robes.

Li Xueyue weighed her options. If she cut off the sleeves, she would lose the minimal warmth it provided her.

If she let the fire go out, they would lose their source of heat and be plunged into complete darkness. Nothing could be more terrifying than this. The storm outside had already heightened her fear, but she tried her best to calm herself.

"Damn the rain," she complained.

The unfamiliar sound of the dagger cutting through cloth made Black Moon prick up his ears.

Li Xueyue used the dagger tied to her leg to cut off her sleeves all the way to her elbows. Suddenly, her whole body trembled because of the exposed skin. She took a deep breath and rubbed her goose bumps desperately.

“Too cold,” she muttered, adding the wet material to the fire.

She prayed that the moisture on her sleeves wouldn't extinguish the flame. To her dismay, it grew only a little bigger.

“I’m so tired…” Her voice trailed off and she yawned. For some strange reason, the coldness was slowly subsiding. It was almost like it was leading her to death’s door. Even Black Moon didn’t realize she had fallen asleep.

It wasn't long before Li Xueyue's eyes fluttered shut. She began to doze off, not realizing it was just a trick of the weather. Her body leaned toward the black moon, and death slowly crawled toward her legs from the shadows.

A few minutes passed, and Black Moon was confused by the silence. He tilted his head, wondering what was going on with the soft whispering in his ear. He sighed softly, hoping to hear something. But there was nothing, except the quiet trembling of the wind.

Heiyue knew something was wrong immediately. He neighed even louder, twisted his neck, bit and pushed hard in the air. What happened? He could no longer hear someone calling his name affectionately.

Black Moon stood up. He heard the rustling of clothes, and then something thumped beside him. He stamped one leg in protest, wondering if his friend had heard the same thing. But he felt and heard nothing.

Thinking of this, he began to panic. He stamped his feet again, groaning in protest. He covered his ears and began to pace around the cave, just to avoid the heat from the small fire that Xue Yue had built.

Black Moon poked at the floor again and again, hoping to hit something. Finally, he did. The motionless body smelled familiar, sweet, and light. It smelled like comfort and home and kindness. It was a scent he was used to and loved. The only problem? She didn't move.

He poked her with his nose again, wondering why her body was motionless. What was happening to his friend? He heightened his senses and listened. Finally, he heard it. The quiet and chirping tinkling sounded strange. The breath was getting weaker and weaker...

He tilted his head in curiosity as a gust of wind blew past. Suddenly, he felt the heat in his side disappear. He was confused and, for the first time in his life, afraid.

Black Moon snorted softly. He paced a few steps, continuing to push his friend at gunpoint. Little did the poor thing know that she would not succeed until the next morning.
