Li Xueyue didn't know what else to do. She sat on the edge of the bed, swinging her legs out of pure boredom. The room was beautiful and perfectly furnished, but she didn't like it. There wasn't a book to amuse herself with.

She sighed softly and observed the carpet on the floor of the room. She had never seen a carpet with such elegant design and rich colors. She wondered if this was Han Jian's specialty.

She hummed softly, her arms at her sides. Perhaps sleep would be better? At least morning would come soon.

She jumped when she heard a loud noise outside the room. What was that? She just looked up when the door slammed open. A cold air rushed into her body, sending chills down her spine.

Her eyes were wide open. She didn't know how or why it happened. But she cried. Seeing him brought an indescribable sense of relief.

"Yu--" Before she could finish her words, he rushed to her. When he hugged her tightly, she let out a staccato laugh.

Li Xueyue had never felt so complete, as if her soul had found its other half. He was with her.

Yu Zhen was indeed here—in person. Alive and well. Even though the months had passed, his embrace was still the same. She flushed against his chest, her ear pressed against his rapidly beating heart. He was as overjoyed to see her as she was to see him.

"I missed you," he whispered in a low, dark voice. He held her tighter until she was pressed against him. He buried his face in the crook of her shoulder. There, her scent was strongest.

"I know," Li Xueyue whispered. She was startled by his sudden embrace, and her arms fell limply at her sides. She hesitated and raised it behind him. She placed her fingertips on his broad upper back as he squeezed her. She felt his muscles tighten as he moved.

"Are you feeling okay?" Yu Zhen took a step back and asked worriedly. He reached out and gently stroked her cheek.

Before Li Xueyue finished speaking, he suddenly brought her face closer. She blushed and closed her eyes. She held her breath, waiting for something only he could give her. But it never came. Instead, she felt his fingers touch her forehead.

Li Xueyue opened his eyes wide in surprise. He bit his lower lip. His body trembled, and he tried hard to hold back his smile.

“Oh, shut up!” Looking at Li Xueyue’s flushed face, he smiled.

“What are you expecting, Sunshine?” Yu Zhen retorted, putting his hands down. It seemed that her body temperature had returned to normal. Not too cold. And not too hot.

Li Xueyue narrowed her eyes in anger. "That's completely different from what you think now." She said angrily.

Yu Zhen watched her cross her arms in delight. She reminded him of a restless cub. He couldn't help but put his arm around her waist.

With a tug, she was pulled towards his solid chest, her palms resting comfortably on it. She wanted to increase the distance between them, but he would not allow her to do so.

Yu Zhen leaned over and placed a chaste kiss on her forehead. Her heart trembled at the action. Even when he pulled away, she could still feel the lingering kiss.

"I miss you, my little hamster." Yu Zhen whispered. He hoped this was not a dream. If it was, it would be the cruelest joke God had played on him.

Yu Zhen couldn't remember how many times the dream had tormented him. She was always there - so close, yet so far away. Beside him, yet untouchable. When he tried to grab her, she would disappear into thin air.

"I miss you more." Li Xueyue whispered. She enjoyed the comfort of their bodies entangled together. He held her as if he was forced to do so.

Li Xueyue smiled, and he kissed her again, this time on the side of her head. "How did I get here?" she asked.

As he hugged her tighter, Li Xueyue melted into his arms.

"Your horse." Yu Zhen replied.

"Where is he now?" Li Xueyue asked. Immediately, fear surged through her body. Did Heiyue... die in the severe cold?

Yu Zhen noticed the flash of panic in her eyes. He reached out and smoothed the wrinkles on her forehead. She still liked to worry, didn't she?

"All is well," he said in a soft voice.

Li Xueyue didn't realize how much she missed hearing him speak. His voice was low and hoarse, but it filled her with warmth. He spoke as if nothing else in the world mattered except for the audience and him.

"For the first time in my life, I felt fear," Yu Zhen said.

Yu Zhen absentmindedly played with the string that held her nightgown in place at the back. One or two tugs and it would come undone. Even now, he could feel the curves of her body. He put his arm around her waist. Her skin was soft, and he wanted to run his fingers over it.

“I thought I had lost you,” Yu Zhen admitted. It was hard to accept it. The night before, he had been so overwhelmed by fear that he was numb. He tried everything to distract himself.

Sleep was an impossible task. He could not close his eyes because he knew she might never wake up. He could not rest without thinking about her. He could not stop thinking about her shivering in the cave. She haunted his thoughts day and night.

It was too late for him to quit now. She was his drug and he was addicted.

"How can you be so stupid?" Yu Zhen asked in a deep voice.

The change in tone caught Li Xueyue off guard. He still loved her so much the second before. Now, he was in a bad mood.

"What are you talking about?" Li Xueyue asked. She was ready to argue with him, sooner or later. But then he surprised her.

"I gave you my pendant. Why don't you find a place to sleep in town?" Yu Zhen asked.

Did he…really express his concerns? Li Xueyue was a little surprised. He always kept everything in his heart before. Did he change when she was not around?

"I was scared," Li Xueyue admitted.

"What?" Yu Zhen asked. This country will soon belong to her. What terrible things are going on outside?

Li Xueyue opened her mouth and explained what had happened. From the bandits to the creepy town she had stumbled upon. His dark eyes filled with recognition, then were replaced by raw anger.

"I'm going to kill them all." Yu Zhen said angrily. He grabbed her shoulders and pulled her close. "Did they hurt you?"

Li Xueyue shook her head. "No, they didn't. Don't hurt them, they are your citizens."

"They ambushed a royal carriage and killed your soldiers, and you have the mercy to forgive them?" Yu Zhen asked incredulously. Her duties had not even begun, and she was already offering him advice.

“I was so angry at the bandits that I wanted them dead,” Li Xueyue admitted. “But as I traveled and saw how the towns were damaged, my anger was replaced by pity.”

Yu Zhen glared at her condescendingly. She was too kind-hearted. This would be a weakness that could be used against her. “Sunshine-”

"Yu Zhen, they had no choice," Li Xueyue said. "The war must have starved them. And they are in the border area. They are the first to be attacked by Wuyi or other neighboring countries."

Yu Zhen had always known that she was smart. If she had managed to give up being a candidate for Han Jian, she must be. But he didn't think her intelligence would be combined with her emotions.

Seeing the fear in her eyes, whether it was fear for the people of Hanjiang or fear of his rejection, he couldn't help but reach out to comfort her. When he touched the back of her head warmly, she blinked in surprise.
