As soon as she returned to the palace, Li Xueyue was driven back to the Crown Princess's Mansion, as if she didn't want anyone to see her. She knew that this was because she came to the Cold Sword Palace unexpectedly. Yu Zhen must have planned the day to officially declare to the court.

"Tomorrow," Yu Zhen told her on the way to her estate. "You will be brought before the ministers."

Li Xueyue was stunned. So soon? She looked back and found that there was already a large group of maids waiting for her. Usually, there were only Yan Xi and a few maids. Did they specially send more maids to help her prepare for tomorrow?

"We'll be married in two days." Yu Zhen grabbed her hands and drew her attention back to him.

Li Xueyue's eyes widened. "But the clothes my mother made for me—"

"I made you a new one," Yu Zhen said. "Everything in the carriage was stolen."

Li Xueyue nodded slowly. She bit her lower lip, wondering if the news of her misfortune had reached her parents. At this moment, she suddenly remembered the carrier pigeon her father had given her. Where is the bird now? Did it escape?

"Please use your carrier pigeon to inform my parents that I have arrived safely. They must be very worried." Li Xueyue said.

"I sent a message early this morning." Yu Zhen comforted her. "You will be fine."

Li Xueyue breathed a sigh of relief. She was a little nervous because they were worried to death. Especially the twins. She shuddered at the thought of their expressions. Everyone must have been shocked to hear the news that Xueyue was attacked by bandits.

"How's tomorrow's surgery going?" Li Xueyue asked.

"Well, you will be dressed appropriately. The royal carpet will be rolled out in front of you. The ministers will gather in the throne room and it will be similar to a coronation."

In response, Li Xueyue nodded. She had experienced a coronation ceremony before. It should be easy to experience another one. At least that’s the case, she thought.

"I'll go back now." Yu Zhen said to her softly. He held her hand tightly and gave her a faint smile.

"See you tomorrow," he said.

"Have a good journey." Li Xueyue put down her hand and said. He bent down and kissed her forehead, which surprised many onlookers.

The maids exchanged surprised looks. They had never seen their prince being so affectionate to anyone.

The prince rarely touches a woman, let alone kisses her. Is this really a political marriage? Or did the prince fall in love with the princess before she arrived?

They stole another glance at the prince. They were shocked by what they found. His frown had softened into a smile. His dark eyes were filled with admiration. It was hard to believe that this was the same cruel, traitorous ruler.

Li Xueyue thought everything would go smoothly, just like the night before her father's coronation. But it was even busier. She had to undergo an intensive beauty routine the night before.

"Are you almost done?" Yan Xi groaned as she washed off her current mask and put on another one.

Li Xueyue has lost count of how many times she has been pampered with skincare products. First comes a milk bath, then a mud mask, and finally she is cleaned up. Next comes the hair care routine.

Her hair was thoroughly washed, combed, and sprinkled with some kind of scented oil. Her lips were smeared with sugar crystals and lemon. The beauty continued.

"It's almost done, princess," Yan Xi said patiently as he braided the princess' hair.

After the incense stick burned out, Yan Xi began to wash off the mask on the princess' face. Next, she placed a hot towel on the princess' face and the beauty routine continued.

By the time everything was over, Li Xueyue was exhausted. Her skin was soft and moist, like the hazy moonlight in the quiet night. When everyone left her room, except Yan Xi, she breathed a sigh of relief.

"I just don't understand how anyone can endure all this." Li Xueyue muttered to Yan Xi who was preparing the bed.

Yan Xi smiled softly after hearing what the princess said. "His Royal Highness the Crown Prince has instructed us to do our best to prepare for the princess."

Li Xueyue blinked. She didn't mean to complain so much. Yu Zhen must be doing this for her own good. He was always worried about her. It was strange.

Why is everyone so concerned about her health? It's not like she can't take care of herself.

She shook off the thoughts in her mind and walked to the newly made bed. Li Xueyue got in and sighed softly. She fell on the bed, feeling a little tired after a hard day.

"Good night, princess." Yan Xi said in a low voice.

Yan Xi approached the lit candles in the room and blew them out one by one, leaving only two lit lanterns on each door, providing enough light in the darkness, but not enough to disturb Xue Yue's sleep.

Yan Xi took one last look in the direction of the princess. Seeing that the young woman was fast asleep, she quietly slipped out of the room.

In the dead of night, a figure breezed past the Crown Princess's manor. His footsteps were brisk but full of power.

He moved resolutely in stealth. In the still night, not a sound could be heard. Not even the crickets chirped, not even the trees shook.

Moonlight streamed in through the empty corridor, creating a path for the man to walk through. The only thing he could see was his shadow. He didn't even have a lantern in his hand.

"Your Highness, Your Highness." The guards greeted him in surprise. They quickly lowered their heads and knelt on the ground.

"You didn't see me tonight," Yu Zhen ordered.

The guard nodded quickly.

"We understand, Your Highness," they replied in unison.

The guards were smart enough not to gossip, especially about the Crown Prince, who was known to cut off useless tongues without hesitation.

The guard opened the door for Yu Zhen, who walked in and closed it again. He walked forward through the dark bedroom, passing through door after door, and finally found her bed.

A cold breeze blew in through her open window. It wasn't as cold as his frozen soul, that was for sure. But it was enough to make him frown.

"You'll catch a cold," he muttered.

The pale moonlight sprinkled on Li Xueyue's body. She was shining, like an ethereal being that did not belong to this world.

Seeing her sleeping peacefully, Yu Zhen sighed. He didn't realize that he had been suppressing his anxiety. His purpose of visiting her was just a simple check-up.

"You slept well tonight," Yu Zhen said to no one. His voice was barely above a whisper - like a ghost wandering the halls at midnight.

Yu Zhen was a little tired from the afternoon work, but seeing that she was safe and sound was enough for him. He walked to her bedside and sat beside her. The moonlight perfectly showed her soft features.

Then Yu Zhen frowned. She was crying.

He lowered his head and brushed the hair away from her face, revealing her fair cheek. It was wet with tears. He thought she was sleeping peacefully, but that was not the case. Her eyebrows were knitted together, forming wrinkles on her forehead. She was not sobbing or sniffling.

It’s a silent pain reserved for the dead of night.

Yu Zhen wiped away her tears and tidied the quilt.

"Don't..." she mumbled, pushing away the suffocating material.

Before Yu Zhen could do anything, he grabbed her wrist. What did she dream about? Who dared to disturb her nightmare? He put her hand into the quilt and continued to cover her with the quilt.

"... touch me..."

Yu Zhen's face was gloomy. Don't touch me? Who was in her dream? She struggled on the blanket, kicking and twisting.

Yu Zhen didn't know what to do. He could only watch her face become more anxious.

"I'm going to kill them," he said angrily.

She was stunned.

He stopped.

Does that work? Yu Zhen looked down at her face. It had softened into chaos.

"Yes, my little hamster." Yu Zhen muttered softly. "Whoever dares to touch you will be killed."

Her brows knitted together as she heard his words. Was she awake? Or was her consciousness slipping in and out? None of this mattered to him.

Yu Zhen inserted his thumb between her clenched fingers. He held her hand between his own. He leaned down and whispered, "Then Yangguang, tell me, who touched you?"

There was silence. She said nothing more.

Yu Zhen pursed his lips. Was this just a simple nightmare? Or a memory of a memory? He didn't know. But she was much calmer now. Her tense shoulders relaxed, just like her facial features.

He breathed a sigh of relief. The nightmare was over. This time, she didn’t wake up in tears. She didn’t wake herself up screaming either. He was worried that she would wake up alone in this dark and gloomy room.

"Everything will be fine, Yangguang," Yu Zhen comforted. He lifted the blanket to her chin and patted her again and again until he was sure that the nightmare would turn into a happy dream.

That night, he stayed in her room, watching over her, making sure nothing was wrong. His sleep didn't matter if she couldn't get a good night's sleep.

Yu Zhen remained beside her, a silent silhouette in the darkness. He sat there until his shoulders grew numb from staring down. The only time he moved was to readjust her blanket.

Not until the night gave way to morning under the pale blue light of the rising sun did he finally slip out of her room—unseen.
