Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 55: Brother and Sister Fight
For the rest of the time, Xue Yue patiently and quietly watched the game unfold. She clapped when appropriate, smiled when necessary, and pretended to be absorbed in everything she was watching. She was the perfect example of a spectator, but to be honest, she couldn't wait for it to be over.
She was very aware that a pair of eyes never left her side, people were watching her closely, but when she looked around, they looked away. Daytime love's eyes never stopped, which meant that she knew something.
Xueyue began to doubt the legitimacy of Ning Huabing's loyalty. After all, it was only a verbal oath. Like every empty promise. Nevertheless, if Ning Huabing was truly loyal, she would be a useful ally.
When lunch was over and the sky turned into a gorgeous painting of red, orange, yellow and dusk, the first day of the competition was over. There were still six days left before they would return to the capital.
"Tomorrow is your swordplay and martial arts competition, are you ready?" Li Chenyang asked Xueyue after everyone was in the spacious carriage. Even with five people, there was still room for more.
"Yes, are you involved too?" Xueyue poked him with her sharp eyes and asked softly.
Li Chenyang smiled awkwardly. She was obviously referring to the archery competition, where he plotted to sabotage her little introduction to society. Speaking of which, after the competition, there would be a grand banquet. There, Xueyue could truly enter the circle of high society.
After a moment of silence, he finally answered, "No."
"Well, is that so?" Xueyue leaned her head against the window and watched the forest move around her. "I guess Brother Wen will also participate then."
Every pair of eyes fell on Li Wenmin, who was enjoying the snacks secretly taken from the competition. When Xueyue exposed him, he was gritting his teeth.
"Ahahaha..." He chuckled and avoided everyone's gaze.
"I haven't scolded you twins properly yet for your previous tricks." Duchess Wang Qixing sighed.
"Mom, think of it this way," Li Chenyang said. "It's better if she loses to us than to a stranger. Don't you think so? People will see it as harmless sibling competition."
"Yes, but you lost, how do you feel?" Duchess Wang Qixing raised her eyebrows.
"Pride," he thought to himself. "I don't mind."
"Of course not." Duchess Wang Qixing sneered. "So, what's the plan for tomorrow?" She snorted and turned to Li Wenmin. "Are you really going to beat your sister in front of everyone?"
"Uh..." Li Wenmin's smile froze. "If...if I were the one who did it, would you like it more?"
This is obviously the wrong answer.
Duchess Wang Qixing's face was furious, her eyes were shining. "Li Wenmin!" She began to question whether she had raised her sons correctly. Sometimes, she would be proud of them, but sometimes, she would feel annoyed. To be honest, being a mother is a very rewarding but tiring task.
"Don't worry, Mom. Obviously, both of these competitions are for women," Li Chenyang assured.
"It's not about swordsmanship." Li Wenmin frowned.
"What?" Li Chenyang said sharply. "I thought it was?"
"The rules were changed mainly because there were not enough participants in the last women's fencing competition." Li Wenmin said, scratching the back of his neck.
"Why don't I know this?" Li Chenyang frowned.
"I knew this after looking at all the competition cards, otherwise why would I be wandering outside the tent?" Li Wenmin raised his eyebrows.
"Then Xueyue will admit defeat. It's too dangerous." Li Chenyang turned to Xueyue and concluded, "So you——"
"No, thank you." Xueyue smiled and said, "I'll be fine."
"As if!" Li Chenyang snorted. "Did you know that this is one of the most popular categories among men? You don't stand a chance."
Li Wenmin grinned, patted his chest, and said proudly: "Especially against me."
Xueyue sneered. "I train almost every day, you know."
"I started training when I was young!" Li Wenmin pointed out.
"Really? I thought you were just playing with swords." Lord Li Chenyang laughed, and his warm voice filled the carriage.
"Dad!" Li Wenmin burst into tears. "You are destroying my reputation!"
"I've already killed it by destroying your wooden sword," Lord Li Chenyang retorted, rolling his eyes.
"Pfft, good luck, Wen-ge. You're going to need it." Xueyue giggled and screamed as he reached out and grabbed her.
"Ladies, ladies, please be quiet." Li Chenyang sighed.
"Madam?!" Li Wenmin frowned. "Great, my family loves to bully me!" He crossed his arms angrily.
"Hey, Brother Wen, don't be so angry~"
Li Wenmin looked as if there was wind blowing in his ears. He stuck his chin in the air and stared out the window, hoping that the trees outside would burn.
"Oh, thank God, he finally calmed down." Duchess Wang Qixing said thoughtfully.
Li Wenmin groaned. "You are not either!"
Li Chenyang rolled his eyes and focused on the beautiful scenery outside.
Xueyue smiled to herself, glad that the topic had changed and she could still participate in the competition.
"Wait, I seem to have forgotten something." Li Wenmin said with a frown.
"Your dignity?" Li Chenyang asked.
"Your brain?" Li Xueyue was angry.
The two exchanged glances and then chuckled, which made Li Wenmin a little frustrated.
"Mom, they bullied me." Li Wenmin pointed at his younger brother and sister and shouted loudly.
"You are too old, my child." Duchess Wang Qixing rolled her eyes and pinched his cheek. He exhaled and glared at the floor.
"Sometimes I forget that I'm raising young people, not quarreling children." King Li Chenyang laughed, his face full of pampering. He enjoyed such carefree moments the most. After Li Minghua disappeared and before Xueyue appeared, the twins often kept to themselves.
"In my eyes, I always regard them as children," said Duchess Wang Qixing, her eyes full of inexpressible love for the people in the carriage.
"So, idiot, what did you forget?" Li Chenyang asked.
“I don’t know…” Li Wenmin scratched his head. “I know it’s important. Really important.”
"That obviously can't be his brain." Li Chenyang snorted, causing Xueyue to laugh. "Sometimes I wish he could use both a sword and a quill."
“That’s it! Sword!” Li Wenmin gasped and clapped his hands. “Mentor!”
"Teacher?" Li Chenyang raised his eyebrows.
"Yes, mentor! Rumor has it that there is a legendary warrior who trained Commander Wen Jinkai to his current position!" Li Wenmin exclaimed. "I heard that he is coming to watch the sword fighting competition to identify potential candidates."
“Why is he scouting for soldiers among the nobles?” Li Chenyang frowned. “I think the war needs more soldiers.”
“We did, but there are rumors that he is looking for a woman with a good figure,” Li Wenmin concluded.
"Women?" Duchess Wang Qixing turned to her husband and asked, "They are going to send nobles... to be their beds—"
"No, dear, of course not. No one would be stupid enough to attack a noble's daughter," King Li Chenyang soothed.
"But there will be someone who has this ability." Li Chenyang said gloomily. "I heard that the emperor plans to send the daughter of the loyal family to the enemy's front line."
"Like... a marriage?" Duchess Wang Qixing's face turned pale. She trembled and grabbed Xueyue's hand from her side.
"I hope so." Li Chenyang frowned. "The problem is, we don't know who they might be. So Xueyue, no matter what you do, don't draw attention to yourself. Got it?"
"This doesn't make sense. Why not send the princesses to the enemy front?" Duchess Wang Qixing hugged Xueyue tightly.
"Our two princesses are about to get married, and the chosen ones... will marry the generals. Together with the princesses, there will be five people in total seeing them off." Li Chenyang said in a deep voice.
“This is a decision I cannot overturn.” King Li Chenyang pinched his brows and sighed. This decision has caused many debates, but in the end, compared with the death of hundreds of thousands of people in the war, the lives of five people are nothing.
"The Emperor has made it clear that there will be no nepotism. Meaning—"
"This applies to every woman present." Duchess Wang Qixing tensed up. "How come no one knows about this?"
"Only ministers would behave like this." Li Chenyang frowned. "The emperor doesn't want this to get out. If it gets out, everyone will start to behave strangely."
"Does that mean that Xue Yue can be chosen—"
“Yes.” King Li Chenyang sighed softly and closed his eyes in pain.
Just like that, Duchess Wang Qixing's entire world was shattered.
