The Book of Doomsday: Little Cannon Fodder Trying to Survive
Chapter 140: Dedication and Sacrifice
"Brother, what do you want to say? Are you saying I'm wrong? Or are you blaming me for saying that?" Song Yi clenched his fists and shouted in a low voice. "Was I wrong? That's right, every one of us four brothers took Tang Tang's efforts for granted. Why? What does she owe us? The most ridiculous thing is that she didn't even get the most basic thanks for her efforts. We four are fucking worthless."
Song Yi looked up at his three brothers in front of him. The eldest brother always had a serious face and no emotion could be seen, the second brother still had a calculating look on his face, and the third brother looked confused, as if he didn't know why Song Yi was so angry.
"Brother, Tang Tang and I will go collect supplies later. The amount of supplies we collect this time won't be too much, and there will be no food. I plan to go to the business district to collect warm clothes and luggage."
"No, why? Aren't you going with Tang Tang? Why do you say there are not many things and no food? What's going on? Is it..." Song Min asked excitedly.
"It's me. I don't want Tang Tang to continue to make endless sacrifices." Song Yi finally shouted out loud. Looking at the surprised expressions of his brothers, Song Yi found it a little ridiculous. Could this be a case of "a little kindness, a little resentment"?
"Tang Tang saved my life, how did I repay her? I kept causing trouble for her. She had clearly said that she didn't want to stay in the barracks, but when she heard that the barracks were short of food and water, she took the initiative to take out her own food and followed us to collect supplies. She was obviously afraid of trouble and didn't want to escort the survivors, but because of our responsibility, we followed to escort them back to the barracks. If it weren't for her along the way, it would be lucky for us to be able to survive, how could we bring so many survivors back safely. Knowing that the barracks were in danger, she didn't say a word. She said she would go back alone to provide support, and she brought out the collected materials without any selfishness. She had not planned to come here, but she came with us, and in the end, she saved everyone. Because I took it for granted that the third brother was in great health, and she was too weak. What was the result? The third brother didn't care about Tang Tang's current health at all. The second brother knew about the third brother's situation, and I'm afraid he was thinking about how to maximize the benefits! Don't you feel ashamed to let her pay without any return from us?"
"Xiao Si, I..." After hearing what Song Yi said, Song Yan finally realized his problem. He opened his mouth to explain but didn't know where to start.
"Don't explain. We are all the same. We are all ungrateful. I've made this clear. No one can order her around. If you don't want to pay the price, do it yourself. Don't overthink. It's getting late. Let's get going."
After Song Yi vented his emotions, he walked towards the car without looking back, leaving the remaining three brothers standing there with unclear expressions, watching Song Yi go away.
Hearing the door closing, Tang Tang looked towards the source of the sound in a daze. Seeing Song Yi with a heavy expression, she couldn't help but become curious. Although she had not known Song Yi for a long time, Tang Tang knew Song Yi quite well. He always had a smile on his face and was a very cheerful and sunny boy. This was the first time Tang Tang had seen Song Yi in this state.
"What's wrong with you?" Tang Tang couldn't help but ask out of curiosity, but her voice came out hoarse.
"It's okay, drink some water." Song Yi picked up the water bottle at hand, unscrewed it and handed it to Tang Tang's mouth, indicating that Tang Tang should open her mouth and drink water. Tang Tang was not used to such actions. She raised her hand with great effort to take the water bottle and planned to drink the water herself. Perhaps because of the severe exhaustion, Tang Tang's hands kept shaking, and the water bottle was shaken out after opening the bottle cap, and the water spilled all over Tang Tang's neck.
Song Yi looked at Tang Tang, put his arm around her neck, and carefully lifted her up. With the other hand, he took the water bottle and slowly fed it to Tang Tang. After making sure that Tang Tang had finished drinking, he carefully put her down. He wiped the water stains on her neck with a towel. After working for a long time, he sat back in his seat.
"Let's set off now. We still have some distance to go, so you can get some sleep." Song Yi said softly, looking straight ahead.
"What's wrong with you? You feel a little abnormal and not quite used to it!" Tang Tang's voice was not as hoarse as before but it had not yet regained its former clarity.
"Nothing, I just suddenly figured out some things and am reflecting on myself. Have a good rest!"
"Okay then, wake me up if you need anything." Tang Tang saw that Song Yi didn't want to say anything and didn't ask any further questions. She closed her eyes and rested.
The car was running steadily on the road, not too fast. Seeing that Tang Tang had fallen asleep, Song Yi drove even more carefully, trying to avoid bumpy roads as much as possible so as not to disturb Tang Tang's sleep.
Looking at the back of the car going away, the three Song brothers remained silent. It was impossible to tell how much impact Song Yi's words had on them, but they all knew that what Song Yi said was true and they would not let Tang Tang help them unconditionally in the future.
As brothers for many years, although Song Yi is cheerful and lively, there is one thing they all know and are very clear that they cannot control, which is his stubborn personality. Once he makes a decision, he will not change it, and he has never done so since he was a child.
Song Ang, who had always been steady, kept scratching his hair while thinking about what Song Yi said. He reflected deeply on every word Song Yi said. It was indeed as Song Yi said that he took Tang Tang's efforts for granted. But what he could guarantee was that he was not an ungrateful person. Instead, he was too self-centered. He subconsciously imposed his way of doing things for many years on Tang Tang, and put his responsibilities on her, and let Tang Tang bear the habits he had accumulated over the years without considering it.
Now I think it's really wrong. I live in a military family, and the military's duties and missions have been engraved in my bones since I was a child. Willing to sacrifice, selfless dedication, and serving the people. What does this have to do with Tang Tang? It's just because I can see that she is capable, so I subconsciously think that she should have the same ideological awareness as me.
Tang Tang did have such an awareness, but I was wrong in that I shouldn't be strict with myself and others, and I took it for granted that I should be responsible for Tang Tang. Now I think about it, I know how much Tang Tang has paid, but I just subconsciously think that in the face of the disaster, everything Tang Tang did was justified. For everyone, even if I pay a lot, the sacrifice is worth it.
