The most powerful wizard in the magic world

Chapter 48: Divergence and Choice

The carriage slowly drove into the gate of Markles City. The coachman held the reins respectfully, his eyes full of expectation and nervousness. After a bumpy ride, they finally arrived at their destination. The city lord's mansion was towering, and the ancient stone walls were covered with moss, as if telling the history of the city.

"Stop!" The coachman suddenly said in a louder tone, pulling the reins tightly. As the carriage stopped, the gate of the city lord's mansion slowly opened, and several guards walked out, looking around with serious eyes.

"You, come here." One of the burly guards pointed at the coachman, his voice low and majestic.

The coachman got off the carriage quickly, straightened his clothes, and looked a little uneasy. "Yes, what do you want?"

"Where are you from?" The guard did not answer his question, but looked straight into his eyes, as if trying to see through his heart.

"I come from a small village in the north, and I'm responsible for delivering a batch of goods to the city lord's mansion." The coachman took a deep breath and tried to appear calm.

"Is this the place you should come to? Do you know that the city lord doesn't like irrelevant people to disturb his peace?" The guard still remained vigilant.

"I... I'm just an ordinary coachman. I didn't mean anything wrong." He quickly defended himself, sweat beading on his forehead.

At this time, the door of the city lord's mansion slowly opened, and a man in a luxurious robe walked out. He looked at the coachman and the guards with eagle eyes. "What happened?"

"City Lord, this is a coachman from another place, claiming to be here to deliver goods." The guard reported, his tone less polite and more defensive.

The city lord frowned slightly, walked forward, and glanced at the carriage, as if examining it. Then, he turned to the coachman and said in a low but somewhat friendly voice, "What's your name?"

"My name is Carl, the city lord." The coachman couldn't help but shiver, but he tried to remain calm.

"Lord City Lord, there are no elixirs or valuables in the carriage, so we can let him go." The guard continued to interject.

"But why did he come here?" The city lord slowly approached the carriage, a look of curiosity flashing across his face. "Do you know how many people in this city dream of meeting me?"

Karl felt the pressure on his shoulders suddenly increase. "I... I just want to finish my work as soon as possible and go back to live a peaceful life." He lowered his head slightly, not daring to look at the city lord.

"Work? What kind of goods did you deliver?" The city lord's voice became softer, but his eyes were still as sharp as a knife.

"It's some ordinary food and cloth, trading items in the city, which are urgently needed to be replenished." This time, Carl tried to make himself sound sincere.

"Food and cloth?" The city lord seemed uninterested in these items. Instead, he turned to the guards and said, "Relax your vigilance against him and let him in. Perhaps he can provide us with some unexpected news."

The guard showed a hint of hesitation, but under the gaze of the city lord, he finally nodded. "Okay, Karl, you can enter the city lord's mansion."

Karl felt relieved, and then he followed the city lord carefully into the magnificent hall. There were magnificent crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and the sculptures on the walls seemed to be whispering.

"You don't go out often, do you?" the city lord asked casually, sitting on a gold-inlaid chair.

"Yes, Lord. I just make a living in the village and take on some errands occasionally." Carl replied with a hint of fear in his tone.

"But what do you do for a living?" A mysterious smile flashed across the city lord's face. "Sometimes, life is not that simple."

Karl felt that he was involved in an unfathomable situation, and his heart tightened. "City Lord, what do you mean? We ordinary people just want to live a peaceful life."

"Peaceful days?" A dark fire flashed in the city lord's eyes. "There is no peace in this world, only power and conspiracy. Haven't you heard that there have been some suspicious activities outside the city recently?"

"Suspicious activities?" Carl was shocked. He had never heard of such things, but he knew that if he tried to show off, he might get into unnecessary trouble.

"This is a matter of our City Lord's Mansion, you don't have to worry about it. However, knowing some things will be helpful to you in the future." There was a hint of amusement in the City Lord's tone, and he seemed to be testing Carl's bottom line.

"I... I really can't do anything." Carl tried to calm himself and avoid making his words sound too desperate.

"Nothing can be done?" The city lord smiled slightly, as if he was enjoying every step of this game. "Each of us can choose. It just depends on what you want."

At this moment, there was a sudden loud noise outside the door, as if something was knocked down. The guards were nervous and ran out immediately.

"What happened?" The city lord looked nervous and stood up.

"I'll go check it out!" Carl felt his heartbeat quicken, and suddenly, he seemed to be involved in this thrilling conspiracy. He knew that once he walked out of this place, things might become irreversible.

The city lord clenched his fists and stared at the door with a sharp gaze. "Just wait here for me. I will take care of this matter."

“I…” Carl wanted to say something, but was stopped by the city lord’s eyes. He immediately realized that he had no right to decide these matters.

Not far away, the guards gathered at the door, discussing what had happened in a low voice, while the city lord had already rushed out of the hall. A moment later, a crowd-pleasing noise came from outside.

Carl felt a little uneasy. He realized that he was no longer an insignificant little character. The fate of this city seemed to be changing quietly. The whole hall fell into silence in an instant. He felt an inexplicable force approaching.

"Come on, everyone!" The shouts from outside were as loud as an alarm. The guards at the door quickly exerted their greatest strength to prepare for the impending danger.

"I can't wait any longer." Carl said to himself, moving his feet, trying to find a chance to escape. He knew that the secrets of this city had already entangled him tightly, and there was no turning back.
