Chapter 18 Good Partner
Officer Leonard's efficiency was satisfactory. He returned with a bag of materials not long after. He even reached out and handed Klein a bottle of orange soda very seriously.
"There's no fruit shop in the hospital, so I'll make do with this for you."
"Thank you." Klein politely took the drink, smiled bitterly, and gave Leonard a complicated look.
Good man, you are always finding ways to take advantage of me!
"So what kind of old joke is this?"
"In the old days, there was a writer who once left. His father asked him to stay where he was and went to buy him some oranges."
Leonard first seemed to have suddenly realized something, and a flash of joy flashed across his face for having obtained a new joke from the past. Then he showed a thoughtful expression and began to recall this rare old knowledge. Then, with his angel-level IQ and the rice he had eaten for a thousand years, he suddenly realized what kind of joke his previous series of actions had inadvertently played, and even brought Pallez to heaven with him. In the end, he entered a strange state. On the one hand, he felt panic and absurd because he had taken a huge advantage of a great existence above the sequence, and on the other hand, he was complacent because he had inexplicably gained the upper hand in the communication with Klein and made him suffer a setback.
...You don't have to be so petty with me, Detective Leonard! Stop being so stupid!
"The young police officer is fine now. The rescue was successful. But they left in such a hurry that I was unable to fulfill their wish."
Klein twisted open the orange soda, and the crisp sound of bubbles made him feel soothed.
"I also have to visit a wounded person and give her something."
Leonard walked around the hospital with big strides, chatting about work while checking again to see if he had missed any documents.
"These are some medical examination reports and some physiological samples of the victim of the last kidnapping case. They will be taken back to the police station for the Trace Examination Department to do a more in-depth comparison. The son of the wealthy businessman was frightened and slightly injured, and has been discharged from the hospital. Through genetic and trace comparison, the criminal has been identified."
Leonard stopped and recalled, then suddenly grabbed a document to check it, and put it back with confidence.
"Two of the three robbers were killed, and one was seriously injured and unconscious. He is in this hospital. This is the autopsy report I just got. The dead are Jem Skechers and Eddie Strange, and the other unconscious one is David Axus - I think I mentioned these people to you."
So Leonard held up the tablet and showed it to Klein.
"I do have an impression. You told me about it." Klein nodded.
The two of them walked in the busy hospital one after the other. This hospital was made up of half of an old church and other newly built buildings. The tall building space was separated by layers of floor slabs, and the newly built buildings were squeezed and twisted because of the land situation in Backlund. These new building blocks belonging to the hospital were like wooden blocks that were forced into a pile of debris, stubbornly and arbitrarily stuffed into the iron-stacked buildings in the city of Backlund. The high-flying covered bridge was like the skeleton of the Harvest Church, connecting the various parts of the hospital. Coupled with the complex functions of the hospital and the high requirements for cleanliness, this hospital was like a white maze with twists and turns. Leonard and Klein had to shuttle between various corridors and stairs.
"Unfortunately, we originally thought that this case would be related to the serial killer Nelson Korodeko, but the current investigations have not found strong evidence."
Leonard held up the specimens and shook them at Klein.
"Hopefully, some of the samples we'll get will yield something - but it's a slim chance. We haven't seen any cases involving Nelson in a long time. He's a vicious killer and we don't think he'll stop."
Upon hearing this, Klein habitually took out a gold pound and threw it into the air, but this time the fall of the gold pound did not bring back any news.
"I can't see where he is."
Then Klein reached out, and the crystal yellow crystal pendulum slipped out of his lace-trimmed cuffs, pulling the thin silver chain and rotating it slightly, confirming Klein's guess.
"But he should be related to this case."
"It seems that this Nelson is quite powerful. He can even interfere with divinations of your level. No wonder we can't catch him even with such advanced technology."
Leonard also showed a solemn expression when he heard this.
"I suggest that you try to avoid divining Nelson as much as possible under the current circumstances. I am only at Sequence 4 right now, and you cannot contact Sefirah Castle. If Nelson or the unknown entity behind him tracks us back, we may not be able to escape unscathed. It is better to act with caution."
That's true. Klein agreed with Leonard's point of view. This was only the second day after he woke up. Now he didn't have a decent humanoid puppet, his wish power was insufficient, he couldn't contact Sefirah Castle, and he knew little about the intricate relationships in the current mysterious world. It would be better for him to stay here for now.
"I just saw Emlyn again, but the situation is not optimistic." Klein shared the situation with Leonard. "He was unexpectedly depressed. I thought I could wake him up with the photo of the doll, but it failed."
"Maybe you should ask him to make you a wish?"
"I tried, but he refused." Klein shrugged. "He kept yelling that he didn't believe in miracles in this world."
Leonard was a little surprised. In his memory, Emlyn had always been lively and energetic, with a kind of pride and drive in his bones, and he did what he said. Although he shouted those slogans that sounded very naive, he was unknowingly moving closer to those naive slogans, and finally achieved a career.
But now, after listening to Klein's descriptions, Leonard felt that the Emlyn in his mind seemed to have lost his soul, huddled lifelessly in a pale corner of the hospital, without the courage to come out and explore or change.
Obviously, Emlyn had lost something else besides his memory. Leonard, who had experienced this kind of amnesia and awakening, also confirmed Klein's guess. As long as he could find the part that Emlyn had lost, he would be able to remember everything.
He was about to express some opinions on Emlyn's current state of amnesia, but he thought about how he was when he lost his memory and thought silently for a while.
"'Savior' and 'Doll'... Will these two be the key words to awaken Emlyn?"
Klein couldn't deny it. What he was thinking about now was: What kind of miracle should he design for Emlyn to satisfy these two keywords?
The two walked out of the building, ran up the stairs, passed through the corridor, and entered the door again. The twists and turns made Klein a little confused. The Cultural Relics Protection Bureau did not know how to adapt, and these old ancient buildings did not even install elevators.
"Where are we going?"
"My last job today is to visit the wounded and give her a bonus and a third-class merit."
As they were talking, the two of them arrived at an inpatient area. A thick and heavy iron gate blocked their way. So Leonard took Klein and turned to the nurse's desk to explain their purpose. The nurse on duty was a little hesitant, but after seeing Leonard's police officer ID and supporting documents, she came out cheerfully to lead the visitor.
"She suffered a lot of injuries in this kidnapping case, and she is considered a great hero in this case. Thanks to her, we were able to rescue the hostages without any casualties."
The nurse held up her access card and inserted it into the electronic lock, then opened the iron door when the green light rang.
"Sir, only staff members have passes here, and the security level is very high. If you need to visit next time, it is recommended that you contact us in advance to make an appointment. If you come up directly to find someone like this, we will think you are here to cause trouble for us."
The young nurse complained.
The dedicated nurse was very wary of the two people who came to visit her suddenly. This ward generally does not allow visitors, let alone a plainclothes policeman whose true or false is unknown and a strange magician who looks like he ran away from a Fifth Epoch costume drama.
Klein then realized that there was more than one iron door in this corridor. Five meters after the corridor, there were two iron railing doors. Looking behind the iron door, the entire white corridor was silent and empty, and the lights were a little dim. Looking more carefully, even the wards in this ward had iron railing doors.
"I think you'll like her very much. You'll have a lot to talk about!"
Leonard was beaming with joy when he mentioned his good partner who was on vacation, but Klein could see a hint of anticipation on his face.
"She is enthusiastic and cheerful, experienced, witty, has traveled all over the world, and has a head full of interesting stories. If you want to ask her something, whether it is anecdotes about strange people or unofficial history and legends, from royal secrets to gossip, you can't go wrong talking to her!"
"Of course, there is no guarantee that all the news is true."
With a crisp sound of dripping, the young nurse swiped the card to open the last iron gate.
"She is the Moon News' special investigative reporter stationed at the Backlund Police Department in the capital of Loen, and the assistant of Leonard Michelle, the youngest detective in the Sixth Epoch—"
"Miss Geraldine Lightning!"
Before Klein entered the ward, he looked up anxiously at the sign posted high up. It read:
18 beds in the psychiatric department!
