Chapter 43 Despair

The convenience store owner's voice was like a needle, piercing my last disguise. I responded randomly, grabbed the mineral water, and rushed out of the convenience store. The dim street lights stretched my shadow long, and I didn't dare to look back, as if there was a pair of eyes behind me spying on me, and fear was like a poisonous snake wrapped around my heart.

My phone ran out of battery, and I was like a headless fly, running around in unfamiliar streets. I hid in a dark, narrow alley, where garbage smelled rotten and the calls of wild cats were creepy. I covered my mouth to prevent myself from making any sound, and my heart was beating wildly in my chest.

Suddenly, a burst of hurried footsteps came from the alley. I was so scared that I ran forward desperately. However, no matter how fast I ran, I couldn't be faster than the car. A black van appeared at the alley like a ghost, the door opened, and several burly men got out. They had malicious smiles on their faces and approached me step by step.

I closed my eyes in despair. Am I really going to die here today?

"boom--"

I felt a sharp pain in my head, my vision went black, and I lost consciousness.

When I woke up again, I found myself lying in an abandoned factory. It was pitch black, with only a few rays of moonlight shining through the dilapidated windows. The air was filled with dust and mold. I struggled to stand up, but found that my legs could not move. I looked down and found a deep wound on my leg, and the blood stained my pants red.

I tore off the hem of my clothes and bandaged the wound simply, but the blood still seeped out. I leaned against the cold wall, my body became weaker and weaker, and hallucinations began to appear in front of my eyes. I seemed to see Zhong Yuxuan, he still smiled at me gently as before, and reached out his hand to me...

No, I can't give up! I still have a lot of things to do. I haven't found my biological parents yet, and I haven't asked the Li family for justice. I can't just die like this!

I gritted my teeth, endured the pain, and crawled towards the factory gate little by little. Every move I made was like someone rubbing salt into my wounds, and the excruciating pain almost made me faint. But I knew I couldn't stop, because if I stopped, I would never be able to stand up again.

I don’t know how long I climbed, but I finally reached the factory gate. I raised my head with difficulty and looked at the faint lights outside. A glimmer of hope ignited in my heart.

As long as I can climb out, as long as I can find someone to help me, I still have hope of survival...

I dragged my broken body like a wounded animal, crawling with difficulty. Every gasp seemed to burn my life, and my eyes went dark, but I dared not stop, because I knew that stopping would mean death. The sound of a car engine could be heard faintly outside, like a fire of hope burning in the wilderness. I used up my last bit of strength to move my body to the side of the road, shouting with all my might: "Help... Help..."

My voice was hoarse and weak, and was soon swallowed up by the night wind. Just when I was about to despair, a black Maybach stopped in front of me like lightning. The car door opened, and a tall and familiar figure came into my sight. My tears burst out instantly: "Yuxuan..."

However, the person who appeared in front of me was not Zhong Yuxuan, but his assistant, A Wei. When he saw my embarrassed look, his face turned pale: "Ms. Li, what are you doing..."

Before I could even open my mouth, everything went dark and I completely lost consciousness.

When I woke up again, I found myself lying on a hospital bed. The smell of disinfectant made me sick, but I felt extremely relieved. At least, I was still alive.

"Are you awake?" A low voice sounded in my ears. I turned around and saw Zhong Yuxuan sitting beside the bed, his face full of fatigue and worry.

Seeing him, my tears burst out uncontrollably again: "Yuxuan, they...they..."

Zhong Yuxuan held my hand tightly. His hand was warm and powerful, as if it could dispel all my fears: "Don't be afraid, it's okay, everything is over."

"But...how did you find me?" I asked weakly.

There was a flash of pain in Zhong Yuxuan's eyes: "It's my fault. I shouldn't have let you leave alone."

It turned out that after I left the Zhong family villa, Zhong Yuxuan had been trying to contact me, but there was no news of me. He was extremely anxious and used all his connections to finally find my trace from the surveillance video of the convenience store. When he saw me being forcibly taken away by that group of people, his heart seemed to be torn apart.

He ignored his father's objection and insisted on going to find me in person, even mobilizing all the power of the Zhong family. He knew how much I meant to him, and he couldn't lose me or let me get hurt.

"Those people...who are they?" I asked tremblingly.

There was a cold light in Zhong Yuxuan's eyes. He stroked my hair gently, and said in a gentle but firm tone: "Don't worry, I will make them pay the price."

His words were full of murderous intent, and I knew that a storm was coming, and I would be at the center of it.

The ward was filled with the smell of disinfectant. I clutched the bed sheet tightly. Zhong Yuxuan's words were like a reassurance, which made me feel a little relieved. But when I thought about what I had experienced, my body couldn't help shaking. Those people, those scary faces, and those rough treatments were like a nightmare that could not be shaken off.

"Yuxuan, who are they? Why do they treat me like this?" I asked weakly, my voice trembling like a fallen leaf drifting in the wind.

A trace of pain flashed across Zhong Yuxuan's deep eyes. He held my hand even tighter, as if to pass on his strength to me: "Don't be afraid, I will find out everything and give you an explanation."

I know he didn't want me to worry, so he didn't tell me more. But I could tell from his furrowed brow and the tiredness in his eyes that things were complicated. He must have put a lot of thought into finding me.

"When you found me... they, they didn't hurt you, right?" I asked worriedly, feeling a sour feeling in my heart.

He was silent for a moment, his eyes wandering, as if he was deliberately avoiding my gaze. "I'm fine, just a few minor troubles." He said lightly, but his tone was slightly heavy.

I know him, and the more he says this, the more it means that things are not that simple. My intuition tells me that he is hiding something.

Just then, the door of the ward was gently pushed open, and Qin Xue and Li Luoyao walked in. They were relieved to see that I was fine.

"Luo Xue, I'm so glad that you're okay!" Qin Xue walked quickly to my bedside, her eyes full of concern.

"I was so worried about you. Fortunately, you're okay." Li Luoyao also said, with a hint of fear in her tone.

"I'm sorry for making you worry." I looked at them gratefully. In this cold reality, their appearance was like a ray of warm sunshine, illuminating the haze in my heart.

In the following days, Zhong Yuxuan stayed by my side, telling me jokes, stories, and various ways to make me happy, trying to make me forget those unpleasant experiences. But I could feel that behind his smile, there was deep fatigue and worry.

Qin Xue and Li Luoyao also often came to the hospital to see me, and they brought news from the outside world. I only then knew that during the time I was kidnapped, Zhong Yuxuan had used all his strength to find me, and even went to head-on confrontation with the criminal group, and was almost injured several times.

"Those people are extremely vicious. You must be careful." I held Qin Xue's hand, my tone full of worry.

"Don't worry, Yuxuan has made all the preparations, and we will definitely rescue you." Qin Xue said firmly.

They told me that Zhong Yuxuan had made a careful plan to destroy the criminal group and rescue me. A glimmer of hope ignited in my heart, but it was also accompanied by deep fear. I didn't know what was waiting for me, but I believed that Zhong Yuxuan would come to rescue me.

However, just as they were about to approach my hiding place, a mysterious man appeared again and ruined their plan...

The darkness seemed endless. I curled up in this cold and damp corner, not knowing how much time had passed. The wounds on my body ached slightly, but I was numb. Only the fear of the unknown gnawed at my sanity like a poisonous snake.

Qin Xue's words still echoed in my ears. Zhong Yuxuan saved me at all costs, even confronting those desperate criminals head-on. My heart seemed to be tightly grasped by an invisible hand, and every breath was accompanied by sharp pain.

Suddenly, there was a loud noise outside, breaking the silence of the night. I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn't see anything in the darkness. It was them! Are the kidnappers back? I covered my mouth in fear, not letting myself make any sound.

Then, I heard the sound of gunfire, dull and powerful, echoing in the empty abandoned factory, and my heart began to beat violently. This sound was so familiar, like a flash of lightning that broke through the dark night sky and illuminated my hope.

It's Zhong Yuxuan! He must be here to save me!

I struggled to stand up, but fell to the ground powerlessly. My throat was so dry, as if it was blocked by a ball of cotton. I tried my best to make a sound, but I could only make a faint moan.

"Yuxuan...save me..."

The gunfire outside was getting more and more frequent, and I could feel everything around me shaking, as if the end of the world was coming. I seemed to see Zhong Yuxuan, his handsome face full of anxiety and worry, and he was running towards me desperately.

"Luo Xue, where are you?" I heard his familiar voice, a little hoarse but full of strength, like the only life-saving straw extended to me in the abyss of despair.

I wanted to respond to him, to tell him that I was here, but my voice seemed to be stuck in my throat and couldn't come out.

There was a loud bang and something collapsed very close to where I was. The dust filled the air and made me cough continuously.

Then, I heard a roar. It was Zhong Yuxuan's voice, full of anger and despair.

"Luo Xue!"

My name, spoken from his mouth, was so heart-wrenching, as if it was pulling my soul out of this endless darkness.

I stretched out my hand, trying to catch that faint light, but my vision became increasingly darker and my consciousness gradually blurred...

I felt my body getting lighter and lighter, and my consciousness was like a kite with a broken string, floating. I seemed to hear Zhong Yuxuan's voice, which was trembling, and he called my name again and again, and it seemed to tear my soul apart. I wanted to respond to him, to tell him that I was here, but my eyelids were as heavy as if they were filled with lead, and I couldn't open them.

"Luo Xue! Where are you? Answer me!" Zhong Yuxuan's voice was getting closer and closer, with a hint of desperate roar. I felt as if my hand was being held tightly by someone. The warm touch allowed me to grasp a glimmer of hope in the chaos.

"Luo Xue, hold on, I'll take you away right away!" I tried hard to open my eyes and look at him, but my eyelids seemed to be stuck by something and I couldn't open them. I could only feel him calling my name constantly, his voice was anxious and worried, as if guiding me in the darkness.

I felt my body being held by someone, his embrace was so warm and strong, like the sunshine in winter, illuminating all the fear and despair in my heart. I wanted to speak, wanted to tell him that I was fine, but my throat was as dry as if it had been burned by fire, and I couldn't make a sound.

"Luo Xue, hold on, we'll be safe soon!" He repeated this sentence over and over again, as if to cheer himself up, and also as if to give me strength. I felt him running, his steps were fast but steady, and every step he took was on my heart, making me feel extremely at ease.

I don't know how long it took, but I felt the surroundings quiet down. He gently put me on the ground, and I heard his anxious voice: "Doctor! Someone come quickly! She needs treatment immediately!"

I wanted to open my eyes and look at him, but my consciousness became increasingly blurred. Finally, I couldn't hold on any longer and fell into endless darkness...
