Marvel crosses Star Wars, and everyone attacks the galaxy

Chapter 32 Blind Faith Is Not the Key to Victory

Colonel James Rhodes is many things: a soldier, an Air Force pilot, and his best friend is Tony Stark.

But most importantly, now he's a hero, a member of the Avengers known as War Machine.

So when Rhodes found himself standing in the bowels of a Venator-class Star Destroyer, he couldn't deny how small he felt as he stared out into space. He and the rest of his team were suited up, ready for the mission ahead.

He glanced back at the busy clones behind him and found that Falcon was among the team of pilots who were showing Falcon how to fly a Republic starfighter.

In the vast space, a fleet of starships is advancing.

"Are you okay, Rhodes?" Captain America asked War Machine, who was obviously in a bad state.

"It's alright, Captain," War Machine said absentmindedly, his eyes wandering through the blackness of space dotted with shining stars in the distance.

"It looks like you have a lot of troubles." Captain America said, standing next to War Machine with his arms folded.

War Machine hummed, then shook his head as another squadron of V-19 Torrent starfighters sped by.

"Wonder what Tony was thinking when he went through that wormhole over New York," War Machine muttered.

Captain America frowned and looked at his comrade. He saw a complex expression of curiosity, hesitation, fear, and contradiction on War Machine's face.

"When he saw what was out there... it completely changed him, and he tried to cover it up the best he could, but he's been living with the weight of it for years," War Machine whispered.

War Machine turned and looked directly at Cap, "That's how Ultron was created. What caused the Avengers to switch?"

Captain America looked at War Machine in silence.

"Captain, what impact will this war have on us?" War Machine asked bluntly.

This is a rather poignant question, as both men have lost considerable numbers in many battles over the years, and both understand that only by abandoning the ego can one shape and change one's fundamental values and principles.

Captain America also confessed: "I'm not sure. The only real reason we're doing this is to find our other teammates."

"I totally agree with that. But what about after that? What do we do when we find all our teammates? Because I'm pretty sure we won't always be as lucky as when the four of us meet each other." War Machine responded.

"I know, Rhodes, I know." Captain America said, scratching his head.

He felt frustrated with himself for not knowing what to do next in this completely unfamiliar environment. "I am just following my instincts here, even though I know it may lead us into a worse situation. The most important thing now is that we are short of manpower, and some important team members are either missing, on the distant Earth, or in other parts of the universe."

War Machine could only sigh and look back into space.

"Captain, you know I don't mean to be nagging like that. I just want to know if this is the right path for us." War Machine said apologetically.

"Now, I think finding other people is the only thing we need to do right now, because in a galaxy that we are completely unfamiliar with, there is not much we can do. For the rest, we can only take one step at a time and make plans for the next step after we slowly understand it." Captain America said directly.

"What happens when we know enough?" War Machine asked, centering on the underlying question of them not being on Earth anymore.

"We develop independently without arousing suspicion, and we don't rely on any forces," Steve said. "But don't arouse suspicion. We left the Earth too suddenly, and the Earth was not prepared for this at all, so in addition to finding our teammates, returning home is the first priority."

War Machine nodded his agreement and looked back at Falcon, who was now with Ant-Man, the two of them were talking to the clone pilot about the capabilities of the Y-wing bomber.

"It looks like they're getting along pretty well with the clones," Captain America said nonchalantly, watching Falcon make a joke that made the clones laugh as well.

"They are very capable, like a well-oiled machine," War Machine said as he watched the other clone troopers and pilots prepare for their upcoming mission under the leadership of Generals Skywalker and Plo-Khun.

"They said their clones were born for this." Captain America muttered to himself, but his expression showed that he clearly disagreed with this.

War Machine didn't have a chance to answer his question, as Anakin Skywalker called a meeting of Shadow Squadron.

War Machine and Captain America looked at each other, and both decided to discuss their previous topic again when they had the chance.

The four Avengers stood aside while General Skywalker and Admiral Yularen briefed Shadow Squadron on the mission, with the astronaut droid R2-D2 projecting a projection of the ship.

"The Senate has commissioned this strike force to hunt down the enemy's new battleships. With the majority of our fleet engaged on the front lines, we will be operating alone this time. General Skywalker has mapped out our battle plan," Yularen said bluntly.

Skywalker nodded and walked over to Shadow Squadron, "While our capital ships are vulnerable to attack as the enemy's ion cannons are capable of disabling our capital ship combat systems, I believe a squadron of bomber groups can outwit their weapons and be able to target the two primary targets, the bridge and General Grievous."

"What do you think?" Captain America whispered to Falcon and War Machine.

"It may not succeed. From their wording, this ion cannon will disable their spacecraft combat system. It sounds like an electromagnetic pulse." Falcon said, squinting at the spacecraft on the projection.

"It seems like a good idea to target the bridge. But the enemy's weapons are still there and they may still be able to strike back at us," said War Machine.

"Then wouldn't it be a wiser choice to use a cannon to shoot from a distance?" Ant-Man asked puzzledly.

"That's true, but it sounds simple but it's difficult to implement." Captain America said, stroking his chin and continuing to watch Anakin's battle deployment.

"Pilot, prepare your bomber." Anakin ordered the clones, and they quickly stood up and walked towards the fighters for a final check. At this moment, Jedi Master Plo and Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano came up to talk to Anakin.

"Skywalker, your plan is too radical and risky. Are you sure Shadow Squadron can accomplish this mission?" Plo Koon whispered.

"Let's go ask them," Anakin said, looking at his pilot.

A bald clone looked towards his general.

"Do you think you can do it?" Anakin asked confidently.

"Yes, General. There is no mission that Shadow Squadron cannot accomplish," the clone responded loudly.

"That's right. Minimum casualties, maximum efficiency, this is the purpose of our Shadow Squadron." A clone to the left of the bald clone also spoke.

"At least they have confidence." Falcon shrugged as he watched the scene.

"It's good to have confidence, but blind confidence is not the magic weapon for victory. I have seen too many missions like this. Their combat plans are tantamount to suicide." War Machine expressed his opinion as a veteran air force.
