“No need.” Lorne didn't hesitate for even a second. His smile remained unchanged as his gaze fell upon Azik, but his words were nothing short of cruel:
“I have already done everything I can. If he cannot survive, then he has chosen his own ending.”
The Death Consul seemed to be taken aback by these words. He opened his mouth, as if wanting to say something, but in the end, he only said, “I thought I had gained a friend.”
“We are, of course, friends.” Lorne corrected him with an unchanging smile, saying, “Precisely because we are friends, I respect the ending he has chosen for himself.”
Was Azik considered his friend?
Lorne felt that he should be. Although the feelings might not be as genuine as with Klein and Medici, Lorne felt that he also regarded Azik as a friend. Otherwise, he wouldn't have asked Azik if he was willing to choose his original ending.
Even though Lorne regarded Azik as a friend, it didn't stop him from exploiting the other party's emotional vulnerabilities.
Lorne had always been this kind of person, gentle yet cruel, never letting go of any exploitable point, and not minding his friends exploiting him.
In a sense, Lorne was actually very inhuman. He didn't care, or rather, couldn't understand those negative emotions that plagued countless people.
Just like a normal person would be angry when being used or deceived, Lorne, even knowing this would happen, couldn't empathize, so he cared more about the result. However, this didn't mean he had no negative emotions. He would also be sad, angry, and embarrassed, but on certain matters, he seemed to have a barrier with ordinary people.
“You are a cruel friend.” The Death Consul seemed to see through something, and said softly.
“I thought you were already used to it. Isn't high-sequence friendship like this? Or is it that His Excellency, the Death Consul, yearns for those pure friendships?” Lorne looked at him with a smile, his eyes filled with interest, as if he was genuinely interested in the answer to this question.
The Death Consul lowered his eyes and, after a moment of silence, said, “I once saw it in books, and perhaps I did yearn for it.”
This time, it was Lorne's turn to be silent. He looked at the unexpectedly easy-to-understand Death Consul before him and laughed again, saying, “Then that's a pity. I have never been a pure friend.”
The Death Consul stared at him for a few seconds before saying, “...It's not necessarily a bad thing. I am not a pure friend either.”
“Are you comforting me? Your Excellency, the Death Consul.” Lorne raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued.
“Is this considered comfort?” The Death Consul asked in return.
“I think it is.” Lorne smiled.
“Then I am comforting you.” The Death Consul said calmly.
“Ha!” Lorne laughed again before saying, “You remind me of someone.”
“Also your friend?” The Death Consul asked.
“Probably not. More like an ally.” Lorne pinched his chin and pondered for half a second before giving his conclusion. Then he said, “You've probably heard his name, the Angel of Fate, Uriel. You and he are a bit alike.”
The Death Consul was taken aback, then revealed a surprised expression. He said, “I know him. Are we very similar?”
“How should I put it? In terms of naturalness, you are quite similar.” Lorne glanced at Azik before continuing, “However, your naturalness is due to emptiness, which is filled in the subsequent cycles, constructing the self, while his…”
“His can only be said to be this kind of personality. This is his self.”
The Death Consul's expression was somewhat bewildered, probably not expecting someone to be so naturally air-headed, but then he thought of something and smiled, saying, “Then he should be doing quite well.”
“Well, although almost all the friends around him have died, he should indeed be considered to be doing quite well!” Lorne recalled Uriel's lifestyle and nodded.
Lorne then looked at the Death Consul and asked, “So, what kind of life do you expect?”
The Death Consul probably didn't expect Lorne's topic to jump so abruptly. He was stunned for a moment before saying, “I have read many books, and those books describe all kinds of lives, but they always revolve around family, friendship, and love. If I could choose my life, I would probably want to try these emotions.”
Saying this, the Death Consul turned his head to look at Azik, his gaze seeming to soften a little, and said, “Now it seems that perhaps what I wanted, I have already obtained.”
“You are truly easily satisfied.” Lorne smiled.
“No.” The Death Consul shook his head. He looked at Lorne and said, “I am very greedy. Precisely because I am greedy, I hope to obtain these emotions. For an angel, for a child of the God of Death, wanting to obtain these is the greediest thing.”
Lorne raised an eyebrow, then smiled, saying, “Then would you like to be even greedier?”
“What do you want to do?” The Death Consul looked at him calmly.
“Just an experiment.” Lorne greeted, and the next second revealed a surprised expression, saying, “I didn't expect it to actually work.”
There is no mistake in the first release of Yishou Yi Nei Yi Rong Yi Zai Yi Yi Kan!
“What did you do to me?” The Death Consul revealed a bewildered expression.
“Just a mask, a mask representing the love you desire.” Lorne replied with a smile. He had originally just tried it on a whim, not expecting that the emotion mask could actually be worn on the summoned Shadow of Time.
Then, after the summoning is canceled, will the Shadow of Time returning to the past bring this mask back with it?
Lorne was very curious about this answer, so he smiled and said, “If you can bring it back, then hide it well. Perhaps it can bring you some surprises.”
The Death Consul was probably a little surprised and a little confused. After a few seconds, he said, “You are also not sure if I can bring it back?”
“After all, I am neither omniscient nor omnipotent.” Lorne said generously.
“…I will hide it well.” The Death Consul then nodded.
“Then come, walk with me outside and witness this world a thousand years later.” Lorne once again extended his hand to the Death Consul.
This time, the Death Consul did not refuse. He stood up, following Lorne's hand, then let go. The two walked out of the villa one after the other, walking on the street like ordinary people.
“How is it?” Lorne turned his head to look at the Death Consul and asked with a smile.
The Death Consul looked at him and said, “There are many things I have never seen before, but people themselves seem to be no different from before.”
“Indeed, but after all, only 1000 years have passed. You can't expect people to grow wings.” Lorne nodded and chatted with the Death Consul casually. They didn't talk about anything too serious, mostly everyday topics. Lorne shared some interesting things about this era, while the Death Consul would talk about some of his daily life.
