Mystery: I Married the Queen of Mystery
#150 - A village of graves
Lord Brad Crees's manor was located right next to the Balchiss Mountains in the west of Backlund. The main building was a tall castle built on a small hill.
Centuries ago, nobles had a habit of building castles in the wilderness. Sometimes, it was because the noble's castle was the only decent building in the entire fief, making it seem as if the castle was built in the wild.
Sometimes, they were built for hunting or hosting banquets.
The initial purpose of the castle Brad bought was for hunting and hosting banquets, as the Franck family was quite wealthy back then.
Arriving in front of the castle's main entrance, the manor's butler led the servants to greet him.
Brad got out of the carriage and introduced Audis to everyone, saying that he was a friend who had come to help him investigate some matters, and asked everyone to cooperate.

Entering the castle, it wasn't as damp and gloomy as imagined. Clearly, it had undergone significant renovations. Huge gas lamps illuminated the originally dim interior, and the floors and wall tiles had been treated for moisture.
Although it had the exterior of a castle, the interior decoration was no different from modern houses.
Since it was already past 12 noon, Brad first invited Audis to have lunch.
While chatting over tea after lunch, Brad kept gazing at the lake shore outside, which made Audis increasingly feel that Brad must be under some kind of bewitchment or influence.
This was also why he was unwilling to report the matter to the orthodox churches, because he knew that doing so would harm Miss Eleanor, and the influence he was under would make him resist doing anything that would harm her.
However, his desire to survive made him think that he should launch some investigation, so he found Audis, the wizard who had just arrived in Backlund and already gained some fame.
While his thoughts were racing, Audis said to Brad, "Find someone to take me around the surroundings. You don't have to worry about me. Just go about your business."
"Okay, okay, okay." Brad immediately called the head male servant in the manor and asked him to take Audis around.
Then, Brad went to the lake shore somewhat anxiously to meet Miss Eleanor.
Audis asked the head male servant while drinking tea, "Do you know where the village where the descendants of the Franck family's side branch once lived, but was destroyed in a fire twenty years ago, is located?"
The head male servant nodded, "I know. I was the one who investigated that place before, asked many people, and spent most of the day finding it."
Audis said "Hmm," then: "Take me there to have a look."
The head male servant asked, "Can you ride a horse?"
Audis nodded, "I've learned it before."
The original owner's memory contained horse-riding skills. Back then, he was the son of a small farmer, and horses were the most common means of transportation on the farm.
So, the wizard held a staff in one hand and reins in the other, riding behind the head male servant.
Just after leaving the castle, Audis saw Brad talking to a woman by the lake shore in the distance.
Audis didn't rush over to startle them. He still planned to go and see the village that was destroyed twenty years ago first.
The area around the manor was that kind of mountain path, with trees on both sides. Soon, he couldn't see the situation on Brad's side, but they had already talked many times before, so he believed that nothing unexpected would happen in the short term.
After walking along the mountain road for about an hour, going halfway around the mountain behind the castle, they finally arrived at the ruins of that village.
This place was already covered by vegetation, looking almost like an ordinary wilderness.
Only a few black walls stood there, showing that people had once lived here.
Audis looked around and asked, "Where did the people in the village go?"
Theoretically speaking, there should be survivors, after all, this was a village, not a cage or a prison, and someone must have escaped the fire.
However, the head male servant replied, "I don't know."
"Don't know?" Audis asked again, "Didn't you inquire about it?"
The head male servant smiled bitterly, "I did inquire. Some people said that everyone here was burned to death."
Audis laughed and said, "At least that Miss Eleanor wasn't burned to death, and wasn't burned at all, was she?"
The head male servant didn't answer. Audis looked back and saw that the other person's expression was a little strange, as if he had something to say, but didn't dare to say it.
Audis didn't take it too seriously. After all, in the servants' eyes, this was the lord's business, and they wouldn't discuss it if they could avoid it.
He asked again, "Where is the village where Miss Eleanor currently lives?"
"On the top of that mountain." The head male servant pointed in a direction.
Audis glanced over. There seemed to be a few houses on the mountain.
He asked again, "Have you been there?"
"No." The head male servant said, "The lord once ordered me to send some things to that village, but no matter how I looked, I couldn't enter that village."
"Can't enter?" Audis was a little surprised.
He was always the one pretending to be a ghost to deceive others, and this was the first time he had encountered someone else pretending to be a ghost.
"Yes." The head male servant said affirmatively, "From a distance, you can indeed see that village, but you can't get close to it no matter what."
Audis nodded, "Wait here for a while, I'll go take a look."
As he spoke, he sprinkled a handful of "Flying Powder", took a few quick steps, and flew into the air.
Amidst the head male servant's exclamations, Audis rushed towards the top of the mountain from the treetops.
When the "Flying Spell" was about to end, Audis sprinkled another handful of "Flying Powder" and continued to fly forward.
Perhaps because he was flying forward and didn't pass through that dense forest, he didn't get lost. After two "flights," he reached the top of the mountain.
Landing on the ground, Audis's spirituality immediately sensed that there was a very evil power spreading here.
Moreover, this was not a village at all, but a cemetery!
As far as the eye could see, there were graves of all sizes, some new and some old, some with tombstones, and some without tombstones.
All the graves were clean and tidy, without weeds, and even without a single rock around them.
In the middle of the cemetery was an open space, and on the open space were several grass sheds, which did look a bit like houses from a distance.
In the middle of the grass sheds was an altar divided into three layers, and a strange symbol was drawn in the center of the altar.
No mistake, first release, first content, look one by one!
Audis didn't dare to take a closer look at that symbol, but he could be sure that it didn't represent the orthodox churches.
Audis didn't do a more detailed observation. His spirituality sensed that the atmosphere here was very strange, and it would be dangerous to stay too long.
So Audis used the "Flying Spell" to leave here. While flying down the mountain, he pondered: The matter here has far exceeded my original expectations. I must report to the church immediately.
Originally, Audis thought that Eleanor was likely to be a strangely-state evil spirit, but now it seemed that the other party's state was by no means as simple as an evil spirit. Audis suddenly lost his confidence.
After flying down the mountain, Audis said to the head male servant, "I've seen it. There's no village there."
The head male servant was slightly stunned, "What's there?"
"Nothing." Audis smiled and said, "Maybe I didn't find the village either."
The head male servant was stunned again. He clearly saw the wizard landing in that village.
"Let's go back." Audis smiled before the other party could continue to ask, "It seems I'm overthinking it. There's nothing wrong here."
When he was about to return to the manor, Audis suddenly said that he wanted to ride around on horseback. As the lord's guest, the head male servant would naturally not stop him.
Audis started slowly at first, but when he left the castle, he began to let the horse run at full speed.
He wasn't running for his life, but to report to "The Machinery Hivemind" as soon as possible.
On the way here, Audis noticed that there was a small town seven or eight kilometers away from the manor. He came to this town and found a telegraph office here.
So he quickly sent an urgent report to "The Machinery Hivemind", asking them to notify the "Nighthawks" and send people to support him as soon as possible.
The reason for notifying the "Nighthawks" was because Brad was a believer of the Church of the Evernight Goddess. According to the official extraordinary's practice, this case should actually be the responsibility of the "Nighthawks".
It's just that Audis had already joined this case, so "The Machinery Hivemind" also had the opportunity to participate in the investigation.
After sending the telegram, Audis rode back unhurriedly. Although going back was a bit dangerous, his sudden departure would arouse the other party's suspicion. It was likely that Miss Eleanor would have run away long before the official extraordinaries arrived.
However, in order to deal with the possible dangers, Audis took a cloth bag from the "Knowledge Wilderness" and put several extraordinary weapons into the bag.
So Audis held a staff and carried a backpack back to the castle, and immediately asked the butler where the accommodation arranged for him was located. He put the backpack in the accommodation in advance to avoid being seen by Brad.
It was already past four o'clock in the afternoon. Audis estimated that "The Machinery Hivemind" should be deploying manpower at this time and contacting the "Nighthawks". They should be able to depart after five o'clock.
Then coming here would take at least seven o'clock in the evening.
As long as he could cope with the dinner later, then there would be no problem holding on until seven o'clock.
Audis sat in the room prepared for him, staring blankly at the beautiful sunset scene outside.
The scenery here was indeed good. Under the setting sun, the lake surface was also dyed the color of the setting sun. A breeze blew, as if the setting sun was rising and falling.
Just as he was admiring the beautiful scenery, the butler came to invite him to dinner.
Audis came to the lobby on the first floor and saw that Brad and a young lady were already seated.
The young lady was very beautiful. Audiss even felt that her appearance matched all of his aesthetic preferences, especially those eyes, which seemed to speak. Audiss felt his heartbeat quicken just from a single glance.
“Wizard, let me introduce you. This is Miss Eleanor, whom I mentioned to you,” Brad said enthusiastically as he stood up.
Audiss slowly nodded: “Hello.”
Eleanor smiled and said, “I know this wizard. He came to my house this afternoon and even took a look at the altar I set up.”
