New Gods of North America

Wayne had never imagined before that "shooting accurately" could sometimes be a bad thing.
The captured prisoner claimed to be named Liam, from Michigan.
His extraordinary ability was somewhat like the stereotypical "chameleon," capable of generating a circle of "optical camouflage" around himself—he called it "protective coloring"—extending about an inch away from his body's outline.
In other words, the "fat man" outline that Wayne saw in the simple lines was actually the "wrapping range" of this guy's extraordinary ability.
So, when Wayne initially outlined that "fat man," the bullets didn't hit him at all.
The guy thought Wayne was just firing randomly to scare him, so he stubbornly hid there without moving.
When he realized he had actually been hit, and that Wayne was telling the truth, he quickly took some drugs, wanting to take a gamble and see if he could get down the tree and run away.
This guy was a "bounty hunter" with a relatively broad scope of business. As long as the price was right, he could occasionally moonlight as a killer or a gangster's thug, depending on the client's needs.
This time, the commission he received was to attack Wayne, originally aiming for the head, but the distance was too far, and he was slightly off.
The detective agency's reaction speed was faster than he had imagined. He realized he didn't have time to escape, and the size of the bolt-action rifle was a bit beyond the wrapping range of his extraordinary ability, making it easy to expose him.
So, having seen Wayne Detective Agency's exploits in the newspaper, he threw the bolt-action rifle away, intending to fake that the attacker had already fled the scene.
Unfortunately, the gun was blocked by a tree branch and failed to throw far enough, so it fell directly under the tree...
As for why this guy would say such detailed things,
it was because Wayne was sitting at the interrogation table outside the large iron cage, playing with a few small green pills produced by Cohen Pharmaceuticals, originally wrapped in paper.
The prisoner named Liam was staring at the pills in Wayne's hand, his lips pale and trembling.
He was very cooperative, hoping to end the interrogation as soon as possible, and then Wayne would give him the pills as agreed.
According to Doug, these pills were not addictive, just painkillers and sedatives.
Wayne reserved his personal opinion on this for the time being,
but Doug also knew the side effects of this stuff—the stronger the pain it blocks, the more intense the pain the user will face once the effect wears off.
Therefore, many bounty hunters have to continue taking these pills until the pain of the wound disappears, or until they can't get the pills anymore.
The prisoner named Liam was shot a few times last night, and Connall dislocated several of his joints.
If all these pains suddenly erupted after the drug's effects wore off, Wayne found it hard to even imagine enduring it.
The result was that this guy was willing to say anything at this point.
Wayne didn't have a hobby of inflicting pain on others, so he wasn't deliberately dragging things out at the moment,
but the questions that needed to be asked still had to be asked: "If you had succeeded in killing me, how much would you have earned from this job?"
Wayne deliberately mixed up the order of some questions to facilitate corresponding back and forth, so as to be able to detect in time whether the other party was lying.
Although the other party seemed to be very cooperative, the basic vigilance against someone who had once shot him in the back could not be lost.
The prisoner named Liam covered the wound with his hand through the bandage, trying to speed up the rate of his reply:
"The client promised to pay me $500, and the firearms were also provided by them. After confirming that you were injured, they would pay $200 first, and the remaining part would be paid after they confirmed your death."
Hmm...
Without even talking about why his head was worth this price, this kind of temperament of "the total amount sounds high at first, but they are slow to pay," makes him feel a bit familiar...
"The person who commissioned you to do it, is he called John Milton? Working for Cohen Pharmaceuticals?" Wayne asked.
The last time Wayne had a similar feeling was when he saw the contract brought by that big lawyer.
Liam bit his lip, shook his head without thinking,
and then quickly added:
"The client was called 'Mr. Weismann' by his servant.
"I don't know if he works for Cohen Pharmaceuticals, but the pills on me were indeed provided by him, saying they might help me complete the commission.
"And from what I understand, he seems to be working for someone called Malcolm Baker—that person used to be a sales representative for Cohen Pharmaceuticals in Michigan."
What's going on?
Does Cohen Pharmaceuticals also outsource this kind of thing layer by layer?
"Have you heard of the 'School of Life'?" Wayne continued to ask.
The other party shook his head.
Wayne thought for a while, "Then you should have heard of the 'indulgences' of the Holy See of the Old Continent, right? I have a similar game here. Since you attacked me and were caught on the spot, you have to leave your life behind.
"I'm not interested in your life, but we need extraordinary materials now. If you want to live, you have to help us catch at least two 'bad guys'. One extraordinary material is as a substitute for yourself, and as for the other one, it is the 'indulgence' you need to pay."
...
After giving a green pill to the guy named Liam,
Wayne came out of the cellar and prepared to report the case with his bandaged wound.
The criminals can be detained first,
but things must be foreshadowed first.
Wayne looked at the window glass of the carriage, feeling that his look at the moment was quite miserable,
and then he asked Doug casually, "Do I look okay like this?"
Doug scratched his head slightly:
"To be honest, sir... you look too calm right now, not like you've just been attacked..."
Oh?
Doug added, "If you look at it from the local church and the Georgeberg police, sir, you have reported several cases recently, and have even been attacked several times in a row... Normally, if people encounter such a situation, their state should usually be anger or fear."
That seems to make some sense...
So, after Wayne arrived at the police station, he slapped the table there in front of Chief Bill Tench:
"The local criminals are too rampant! If the police can't investigate a reasonable result, then our detective agency will take its own measures to fight back."
Bill Tench waited for Wayne to finish roaring before closing the door of his office, and incidentally put the cup of cheap coffee he had poured next to Wayne's hand,
and then he pushed a file over:
"I'm not sure who you're in conflict with right now, Wayne, but since it's within the scope of Georgeberg, you'd better abide by local laws, so as not to be caught. The previous things about your detective agency have been dug up again."
Wayne looked at the file and saw that
when the detective agency was protecting Mr. Ben Hammon, they had actively ambushed people from the School of Life, and almost burned down one of their footholds or safe houses in the process.
This matter had already been resolved, and the detective agency had even paid some money, but unexpectedly, it had emerged again.
The owner of the house accused the detective agency of "verbal or violent coercion" against him, and used this to lower the amount of compensation.
Hiss...
The other party's entry point is quite accurate,
The church can allow the detective agency to target criminal extraordinaires, but it has not allowed the detective agency to bully "ordinary people\
,"and this kind of practice of attacking reputation cuts off people's financial resources...
