People Are In The Magical World, There Is No Magic Power
Chapter Twenty-Four: It's As Simple As That.
At the edge of the hills on the left side of the Crimson Earth Road.
"Commander Van Ni has begun to attract attention for us!"
Rowan naturally heard Van Ni's voice spreading throughout the camp.
Old Man Bafu glanced at Van Ni who was floating in the air. He did not say anything and continued to rush toward the inner part of the hills.
Rowan quickly followed.
The two of them ran, jumped, and slid between the hills and ravines.
The terrain of the hills was very uneven. Only Professionals and Rowan who had trained their bodies thousands of times could move freely.
Around ten minutes later, the two arrived at the edge of the fog.
Bafu raised his hand toward the fog.
The moment he touched the fog, Rowan's hand seemed to "diffuse" like the fog.
After taking a closer look, it was no different from normal.
"Is this the assimilation trait?" Rowan thought.
Bafu withdrew his hand after the assimilation and walked into the fog. He then turned around and looked at Rowan with his cloudy eyes.
Rowan entered the fog without hesitation. He did not cause any reaction from the fog.
Seeing that Rowan was fine, Bafu took out the map Van Ni gave him from his storage equipment.
Although the veteran had already memorized the entire map in his mind when Van Ni drew the location of the target, he still had to confirm it just in case.
Rowan leaned forward and looked at the map.
There were four red circles on the left side of the hills, which meant there were at least four nodes of the formation.
However, this was only the result of the inaccurate data of the explorers. There might only be two or three nodes, or seven or eight nodes.
Bafu pointed at a place on the map.
"Our current position."
The old soldier rarely spoke normally.
Bafu then pointed at the second closest red circle to their current position. He then walked in a semicircle and passed by the two furthest red circles before finally returning to the closest red circle.
"The mountains are obstructing us. Let's start from here." The old soldier then pointed at the second closest red circle.
The closest red circle was surrounded by mountains. They would have to take a detour from there. They could not walk in a straight line. Therefore, they would first go in a semicircle to deal with the other three red circles. They would then go around the first red circle.
"I understand."
Rowan expressed that he had no objections. He then took out the Mana Cutter Sword.
The moment Demon Breaker appeared, the fog around the two of them retreated by one or two meters.
Rowan swung Broken Demon forward, creating a fog-free area of three to four meters in front of him. The visibility increased from three meters to six meters.
"Captain Bafu, should I lead the way?"
Baff glanced at Broken Demon and nodded silently. He then pulled out his longsword and guarded Rowan's back.
It was a long sword with some wear and tear. The dark bloodstains that could not be wiped off were the glory of its long history on the battlefield.
Baff's lips twitched, and a small magic array appeared beside each of his ears. Mana also flashed past his nose.
"When one of your senses is blocked, don't stick to it. The other senses are also very important."
Baff said to Rowan like an elder imparting his experience.
"Don't be fooled by Baff's appearance. In fact, he's a very good person. He's also very capable …"
Rowan remembered what Vanni had said.
From the looks of it, he was indeed a very reliable senior.
"Thank you for your guidance."
Rowan calmed his mind and focused his other senses as well. He no longer stuck to his vision.
Although he did not have the support of magic, his body had been trained to this point. His senses were far better than a normal person's!
Baff nodded silently and did not say anything else.
For a Professionist, a person had six senses — — the normal five senses and Mana Perception.
This fog blocked the two senses, vision and Mana Perception. It was very restrictive for a Professionist.
However, for Rowan who did not have any Mana, it was only limited to his vision. The experienced Baff could also deal with it easily.
Rowan moved forward while clearing the fog. Baff followed behind him and stayed on guard.
Although he could only clear a few meters of fog, there might be traps within these few meters.
Just like now.
Rowan swept Demon Breaker as usual and cleared a few meters of fog-free area. A small part of the slowly operating magic array was exposed to the two of them.
Rowan looked at Baff. He did not know what this was, but the experienced Baff definitely knew.
"Warning magic. If a creature with Mana comes within five meters, it will send a warning to the caster."
Baff recognized it at a glance.
It will trigger if it comes within five meters?
Rowan clicked his tongue.
This fog limited a person's vision and Mana Perception to a range of three meters. In other words, before you could discover this warning magic, you would be discovered by the enemy first.
If Rowan did not use Demon Breaker to clear the fog, the two of them would have already been discovered.
"Will we be discovered if we directly remove it?"
"As long as no creature with Mana comes near, we won't."
Rowan threw Demon Breaker at the magic array.
The moment it touched Demon Breaker, the magic array shattered and dissipated.
Rowan picked up Demon Breaker and continued forward.
Baff did not say anything and continued to follow Rowan and guide him forward.
Because they had to clear the fog while moving forward, the two of them were much slower.
An hour later.
"We're here."
Baff suddenly said and signaled for Rowan to stop.
The two of them were currently at a corner at the foot of a mountain.
"Listen carefully" Baff said.
Rowan immediately held his breath, closed his eyes and focused his senses on hearing.
"Tap …"
Rowan suddenly opened his eyes.
It was the sound of footsteps!
Someone's here!
Baff leaned against the mountain wall, raised his hand and used a low-level Water Magic to create a small water mirror at the corner, using the mirror to observe the situation behind the corner.
But there was only fog in the water mirror.
"Use your sword and slowly extend it forward from behind the corner. If I tell you to stop, immediately pull your sword back" Baff told Rowan.
Rowan immediately moved forward and slowly extended Demon Breaker to clear a lot of the fog.
Baff stared straight at the water mirror.
"Stop!"
Following Baff's shout, Rowan quickly pulled Demon Breaker back into his body and took it out from behind the corner — — -pulling Demon Breaker back would accidentally clear a lot of the fog, which would increase the chance of being discovered.
Rowan looked at the water mirror.
On the water mirror's reflection, on the other side of the small hole where Demon Breaker had cut through the fog, there was a fog-free area about a hundred meters in diameter.
Because the fog-free area was blocked by the fog above, it was hard for sunlight to shine in, so it was quite dark. However, there were several extremely bright lights that illuminated the area, solving the problem of light.
Over a dozen large tents were set up in the fog-free area, soldiers wearing Valen Empire's military uniform were moving back and forth, busy with their own tasks.
The center of the fog-free zone was a magic formation with a diameter of five meters — the node of the magic formation!
"What's going on?"
Rowan asked softly.
Baff turned the mirror slightly and observed the illusion in the fog-free zone.
"Forty-two people. Including the people who might be in the tents, there are around fifty of them."
Baff said in a deep voice.
"Most of them are in the third-tier. Four of them in the captain's uniform are in the fourth-tier."
How did he know the enemy's strength so easily?
As expected of a veteran.
"Let's cut off their means of communication and cut off their escape route."
Baff took out a small device from his storage equipment. He crouched down and placed it on the ground before looking at Rowan.
"Open a path and circle the area. Don't move the fog in the innermost circle."
Rowan nodded. The two began to circle the area.
Baff would place a device every once in a while.
The fog in the innermost circle provided them with a good cover. Rowan had also removed the alert spells in the area with Magic Breaker.
They finished circling the area.
Baff placed the last device. He took out a device that looked like a starter and pressed the button.
"Zizi …"
The installed device made a slight noise, and then there was no more movement.
Baff observed their current location. They would be behind a huge tent after entering the fog-free zone. They would only bump into two soldiers. The rest of the soldiers would not notice them.
"I'll take the left, you take the right. The moment I toss this block out, we'll charge out and eliminate the two soldiers as quickly as possible with the least commotion."
Baff raised his sword and held a block with runes on it in his other hand.
"Remember, aim for their heads. Don't let them have the strength to struggle."
Rowan raised his Magic Breaker and tensed his body. He was ready to burst out at any second.
…
"(Sigh) … even though this place is a lot safer than the Crimson Earth Path, it's so boring."
A young soldier standing behind the tent sighed.
"You little prick, don't you dare say something like that on the battlefield just because I'm your father."
Another middle-aged soldier in a captain's uniform knocked the young soldier on the head. The magic he was emitting was in the fourth-tier.
"Oh my, I was just trying to brag. Besides, it's really boring here."
The young soldier swept his hand across his head.
"I don't know how long this battle will last. I miss Mom's cooking."
The middle-aged soldier was taken aback, and then he sighed deeply.
"Me too …"
"What is His Majesty thinking now?
What's the point of fighting a war? The original Emperor Julius is much better … "
The middle-aged soldier hurriedly covered his mouth and looked around nervously. He was relieved when he saw that no one had heard him.
"Stinking brat!
Do you want to kill your father?! "
The middle-aged soldier knocked his son's head hard.
"Just think about it in your heart. Never say it out loud!"
The young soldier stuck out his tongue and said, "Just think about it … So, Dad, you think so too?"
"Shut up!
You have to call me captain on the battlefield! "The middle-aged soldier glared at the young soldier.
"What does it matter? It's just the two of us here …"
Before the young soldier could finish his words, a small square appeared in their vision.
The father and son's senses seemed to have slowed down. They watched as the small square slowly moved past their eyes. Everything around them was silent.
Two figures quickly jumped out of the fog, and their shadows shrouded the father and son.
Rowan swung Broken Magic at the young soldier's neck, and Baff stabbed the middle-aged soldier's head with his sword.
The middle-aged soldier was the first to react. He subconsciously acted.
That was not the action of a soldier, but … the action of a father.
In this moment of life and death, the middle-aged soldier didn't care about Baff's sword. He raised his hand and hit Rowan's sword with a thick magic power, trying to shake it off. However, he only had time to cover his body with a thin layer of magic power.
Between his life, the mission of a soldier, and the responsibility of a father, he chose the third.
But … he chose the wrong target.
The instant he came into contact with Mana Breaker, the Mana Breaker was completely erased.
"…!"
2
Rowan chopped off the young soldier's head, and Baff's sword pierced the middle-aged soldier's head.
The young soldier's head fell to the ground without making a sound. His expression was still the same as when he saw the small square. He did not even have time to show fear.
The middle-aged soldier whose head was pierced had an anxious expression.
Baff did not stop after he succeeded. He kept the two corpses in his storage equipment to prevent the smell of blood from spreading out.
Corpses were dead. Even magic equipment that could not store living things was able to store corpses.
After he was done, Baff picked up the small square on the ground and rubbed its surface with his thumb.
The originally quiet surroundings had returned to normal.
— Sound Suppression Equipment.
Rowan stood still in his spot.
"Is this your first time killing someone?"
Baff asked softly.
"Yeah."
Rowan nodded. He did not feel like vomiting, but a strange feeling.
He was not the one who killed the Devil's Bishop. At the time, he was infuriated by the Devil's Bishop's act of sacrificing an entire village. He did not feel any guilt when he killed the Bishop.
But now …
Rowan had heard the conversation between the father and son very clearly.
Baff patted Rowan's shoulder.
"It has nothing to do with sympathy or anything else. It's a difference in position and duty."
"As Walen's soldiers, it's their duty to obey the Emperor's orders. As soldiers of the Federation, it's our duty to fight against them and protect the people of the Federation. It's just a difference in position."
"For people with different positions, different responsibilities, different missions, and different values, who is a good person, who is a bad person, who is a friend, who is an enemy, these are completely different. Even if different people can empathize with each other, it's only limited to empathy."
"What we need to do is to shoulder our own responsibilities and missions. We need to keep moving forward, and eventually fall on the path we're on."
"In conclusion, they want to invade us, and we need to protect our homeland. It's that simple. You might find it hard to accept, but this is the world."
It was rare for Baff to talk so much.
Rowan looked at Baff in a daze. His old, cloudy eyes were looking at him like he was looking at a junior.
"… Just like what Commander Vanni said, Captain Baff, you're a very reliable senior."
"Is … that so?"
Baff was startled, which was rare.
"You also … think the same …"
For some reason, Rowan felt Baff's old but straight back bend a little.
