Reborn at Hogwarts
Chapter 22 The Sorting Ceremony
The voice came from Ivan's right side. The tone was flat, clear and cold, and at the same time Ivan had goose bumps all over his body, at the same time, he felt an inexplicable cold wind blowing against his face.
Ivan was so frightened that he quickly turned his head to look where the sound was coming from, only to see an erratic, slender, translucent figure passing through the opposite wall and disappearing.
A female ghost?
Ivan stared at the place where the female ghost disappeared for a while, and then calmly put his left hand into his pocket. It was empty, except for a bag of Bibi's more-flavored beans that had been opened.
...What do you mean, do you want to eat my candy?
"Ivan, was that ghost just now?" Eddie standing beside him stared blankly at the wall, his mouth open enough to stuff an egg.
"It should be, I heard that Hogwarts—"
Before Ivan could finish his sentence, piercing screams erupted from the crowd.
From the wall behind them, about twenty ghosts suddenly popped out. These pearly white, translucent ghosts glide across the room, whispering to each other, paying little attention to the first-year students. They drifted past under the stunned gaze of the little wizards, and the fish disappeared through the opposite wall.
"Now, stand in a single file and follow me." Professor McGonagall came back, and she stood at the door, beckoning to the first-year students, "The sorting ceremony will begin soon."
The little wizards lined up obediently, followed Professor McGonagall out of the room, passed through the foyer, and entered the luxurious auditorium through a pair of double doors.
Students from other grades of the college were already sitting around four long tables, above which thousands of candles floating in mid-air illuminated the auditorium. Glittering gold plates and goblets stood on four tables. There is another long table on the upper stage of the auditorium, which is the teacher's seat.
Professor McGonagall took the first-years over there, and lined them up facing all the seniors, with the teachers behind them. Candles flickered, and the hundreds of faces watching them looked like pale lanterns. The ghosts also shone with dim silver light among the students.
"Hey, look at the ceiling!" Eddie poked Ivan's arm, motioning him to look up.
Ivan raised his head and looked up, only to see stars shining on the velvety black ceiling, as clear and charming as a real starry sky.
It's hard to believe that there's a ceiling there, and it's hard to believe that the auditorium isn't open to the air.
"Oh—this must have been done by magic," Ivan heard Eddie say in a tone of surprise mixed with envy. "This is really—this is really—"
He stammered and repeated this sentence several times, but he didn't know why.
Professor McGonagall gently placed a four-legged stool in front of the first-year students, and then placed a pointed wizard hat on the stool. The hat was patched, worn out, and very dirty.
There was no sound in the auditorium. Then the hat twisted, and a wide slit opened like a mouth—and the hat began to sing:
"You may think I'm not pretty,
But don't judge a book by its cover,
If you can find a more beautiful hat than mine,
I can eat myself up.
You can make your bowler hats black and shiny,
Make your top hats smooth and crisp,
I'm the Sorting Hat at Hogwarts,
Nature stands above your hats.
any thought hidden in your mind,
Can't hide from the golden eyes of the Sorting Hat,
Try it on,
I will tell you which college you should be assigned to.
You may belong to Gryffindor,
There is courage buried in the bottom of my heart,
Their courage, boldness and chivalry,
Make Gryffindor stand out;
You may belong to Hufflepuff,
The people there are upright and faithful,
Hufflepuffs are stoic and honest,
Not afraid of hard work;
If you're smart,
Perhaps into wise Ravenclaw,
Those who are wise and learned,
Will always meet their fellows there;
Maybe you'll be in Slytherin,
Make sincere friends here,
But those cunning and insidious will stop at nothing,
to achieve their goals.
Come put on me! Don't be afraid!
Never panic!
in my hand (although i don't even have a hand)
you are absolutely safe
Because I am a thinking magic hat! "
After the hat sang, the audience applauded thunderously. The Hat bowed to each of the four tables and then remained still.
Ivan shrank to the end of the line and patiently listened to the "Sorting Song".
After listening to it, apart from the feeling of "Isn't this song really for black Slytherins?", he only felt that he wasted ten precious minutes of his life...
Although it is indeed quite strange to see a hat open and sing.
At this moment Professor McGonagall took a few steps forward, holding a roll of parchment in his hand.
"Whoever I call now puts on his hat and sits on a stool to be sorted," she cried. "James Abbott!"
A black boy came out from the crowd and sat on the stool tremblingly.
"Don't be afraid." Professor McGonagall comforted him and put the hat on his head.
"Hufflepuff!" the hat called after a moment's pause.
Those at the table to the right applaud and welcome James Abbott to their table. Ivan glanced over there, and as expected, he saw a fat ghost dressed as a monk waving happily at the boy.
"Elena Alcott!"
This time, a silver-haired girl with a ruddy complexion came out of the queue. She didn't seem to be as nervous as James, but her eyeballs were rolling around, as if she was thinking about something.
"Ravenclaw!" the hat called again.
This time the second table from the left clapped their hands and several Ravenclaw students stood up to usher Elena into their ranks.
"Belinda Brooke!"
"Gryffindor!"
"..."
The sorting ceremony went on in an orderly manner, but Ivan vaguely felt a little disharmony.
What went wrong?
When the Sorting Hat shouted "Ravenclaw" again, Ivan followed the cheers and suddenly understood what was incongruous.
There are no house ghosts at the Ravenclaw table!
The other three colleges were accompanied by ghosts watching the sorting ceremony, cheering and applauding with the students.
Gryffindor's "Almost Headless Nick", Slytherin's "Bloodman Baron", and Hufflepuff's "Fat Friar"...
Only the ghost of Ravenclaw's college, Ms. Gray, was not seen.
Did you not attend the sorting ceremony before, or did you do something else?
However, this idea only flashed in Ivan's mind, and he put it aside without further investigation.
It's better not to explore this abnormal situation, just do what the ghost likes, anyway, it has nothing to do with him...
"...Ivan Vesemir!"
Professor McGonagall's voice sounded again.
The entire auditorium was silent for a moment, and then there was a burst of whispering.
"Vesemir? The boy who went from squib to wizard?"
"His father is the Head of the Ministry of Magic!"
"Wonder Boy on The Quibbler..."
Amidst the noisy discussions around, Ivan walked out of the queue quickly and sat on the four-legged stool in front of Professor McGonagall.
The lyrics of the song of the sorting hat should be changed every year. In order to respect the original work, I removed a word (in fact, I don’t know how to change it)
