#210 - A surprise

Chapter 210: An Unexpected Delight

The three of them spurred their horses onward, quickly arriving at the South Lake Veterinary Station.

As soon as they entered the courtyard, Chen Fan shouted, "Station Chief Zhou, we're here!"

Station Chief Zhou had been waiting in the office. Hearing the voice, he ran out and, seeing them still on horseback, couldn't help but smile, "Your team really values you, providing you all with horses."

With Chen Fan present, Yang Zhijun and Li Zhengqun naturally wouldn't take the lead, obediently standing behind him.

Chen Fan dismounted and chuckled, "This is called cultivating seedlings and transplanting rice. Once we get our veterinary certificates, the team can have a great harvest."

Station Chief Zhou laughed heartily, "That's quite the vivid analogy."

He then turned to Wang Shiping and said, "Take these two to the backyard and teach them how to change the medicine for the ox from the Red Star Brigade."

Chen Fan was slightly stunned, "Straight into practical lessons?"

He had thought they would first have a few days of formal lessons before he would suggest switching to practical lessons to Station Chief Zhou. He hadn't expected to start right away.

What an unexpected delight!

Station Chief Zhou turned back and smiled, "You've already passed the theoretical exams, what's the point of more classes? Just read the books yourself. Once you're here, follow the old doctors and learn how to treat illnesses."

These days, they all received a fixed salary. Whether they treated a hundred animals or sat idle with no animals to treat, they still received the same amount of money. Naturally, they hoped the production team's veterinarians would be as skilled as possible, ideally solving all problems at the lower levels, so the commune veterinary station could relax.

Therefore, when these doctors taught veterinary skills to the trainees, they almost never held back, even hoping the newcomers would be more capable.

Of course, those with unique skills would still keep some secrets.

However, those with unique skills had long been transferred to the county or even the prefectural committee. Those who remained here, in Xiao Liewen's words, were indeed of average skill, which reduced the amount of infighting and dirty tricks at the veterinary station.

Anyway, everyone was short and unremarkable, so no one should laugh at anyone else.

Hearing Station Chief Zhou's words, Chen Fan nodded and turned to Yang Zhijun and Li Zhengqun, saying, "Then you two should learn diligently from Doctor Wang, ask for clinical experience, and read books in your spare time. Ask about anything you don't understand. Any doctor here can be our teacher…"

Before he could finish, Station Chief Zhou stopped him, "Alright, alright, alright! You're making us look bad. Little Yang, Little Li, go in and start learning. I have a few words to say to your Teacher Chen."

Wang Shiping chuckled and led Yang Zhijun and Li Zhengqun to the back, saying, "Teacher Chen would have handled these minor ailments long ago. It's you two who haven't been exposed to them yet, so watch carefully later."

Before they walked far away, Station Chief Zhou approached Chen Fan from the other side, looking at the mare he was leading and asking, "This horse looks quite normal?"

Chen Fan glanced at the horse, turned back, and said, "Oh, it healed itself."

"Healed itself?"

Station Chief Zhou stared at Chen Fan, his eyes full of suspicion, "I'm telling you, I didn't read much, so don't try to fool me!"

Chen Fan chuckled dryly twice, "How could I possibly fool you? Yesterday, when it saw the foal, it got better. From noon yesterday until now, it's been well-behaved, eating properly, sleeping well, and not kicking or biting people. It's been very obedient."

Station Chief Zhou was dubious, slowly walking up to the mare and reaching out to touch it.

The mare glanced at him, too lazy to pay attention.

Station Chief Zhou immediately beamed, "Eh? It really got better?"

He patted the horse's back a couple of times, and the mare didn't budge.

Station Chief Zhou took two steps back, crossed his arms, and walked around the mare, saying with a surprised expression, "According to you, this horse really just missed its child?"

Chen Fan nodded solemnly, "Probably."

Station Chief Zhou clicked his tongue, "Eye-opening, truly eye-opening!"

After a pause, he patted the horse's back again and said to Chen Fan, "Why don't you get a saddle for riding your horse? Those two even padded theirs with felt and used rope and wooden boards as stirrups. You're riding bareback, aren't you afraid of falling off?"

Chen Fan very seriously fabricated, "Their mules were provided by the team, so of course they have matching pads and stirrups. This is my own horse, and I don't have money. Where am I going to buy a saddle?"

Station Chief Zhou pointed at him, speechless, turned around, and walked inside, "Tie up your horse and come to my office."

Chen Fan raised his eyebrows slightly, led the horse to the backyard, and tied it in the livestock shed, next to the mules ridden by Yang Zhijun and Li Zhengqun.

Looking at the two of them, they were squatting in front of a water buffalo lying on the ground, changing the medicine on its leg.

Wang Shiping looked at them in surprise, "Have you guys learned this before?"

Yang Zhijun nodded, "Teacher Chen taught us, we studied for half a month."

Li Zhengqun was more quick-witted and quickly added, "Teacher Chen taught us very seriously, but the time was too short. In half a month, we only had five or six cases. We've only learned how to treat external injuries, colds, and stomach problems."

Wang Shiping pursed his lips and paused for several seconds before saying, "Our veterinary station mainly deals with these cases. There aren't many unusual cases. I don't know if you'll encounter other types of cases during your two months here."

Li Zhengqun was only 15 or 16 years old after all. Hearing this, he didn't know how to respond.

Chen Fan walked over and smiled, "South Lake Commune is only so big, with a total of five production brigades. There aren't that many difficult and complicated cases. Anyway, we're here for two months with the attitude of learning. Doctor Wang, you can't hold anything back."

Wang Shiping turned back and smiled, "If you put it that way, then I won't be polite. The livestock sent here during these two months will be handed over to you to treat."

Chen Fan clapped his hands and pointed at Yang Zhijun and Li Zhengqun, saying, "Did you hear that? Such a good opportunity, Doctor Wang is handing it over to us. Hurry up and thank Doctor Wang."

The two quickly nodded and bowed to Wang Shiping, "Thank you, Doctor Wang."

Their politeness made Wang Shiping blush. He waved his hands repeatedly and said, "No need to be polite, no need to be polite. Come, come, come, you guys do it, and I'll watch from the side."

He then patiently instructed, "Your techniques are not bad. Doctor Chen taught you well. It's just that your proficiency is not enough. You can do this first, see…"

Seeing that the teaching was responsible and the learning was serious, Chen Fan smiled with satisfaction and turned to enter the veterinary station office.

After politely greeting the acquaintances at the veterinary station, Chen Fan arrived at Station Chief Zhou's office.

Seeing him come in, Station Chief Zhou immediately got up, opened the cabinet, and took out something wrapped in straw mat.

Chen Fan's eyes lit up instantly, "Is that a hunting rifle?"

Station Chief Zhou nodded, unwrapped the straw mat, revealing two dark, shiny double-barreled hunting rifles, and said, "I don't know where these things originally came from. Anyway, Mo Xingbo from the Victory Brigade has been hiding them at his home for over 20 years. His old father collected them, but he passed away half a year ago, so no one knows their origin.

He has seven or eight rifles and short guns at home, and he wanted to sell a few to exchange for money, but these things aren't worth much in the countryside. Who would spend tens of dollars to buy a gun for no reason? So he hasn't been able to sell them.

Yesterday, when I went over there, I told him about this, and he immediately picked out the two best ones. See if you like them."

Chen Fan first looked at them. The two hunting rifles were not the same shape. One was a side-by-side double barrel, and the other was an over-and-under double barrel. The similar point was that they were both break-action designs and exquisitely crafted. Even though the gun bodies seemed to be a bit old, the overall appearance was still dark and shiny, as if they had just come out of the factory.

The gunstocks seemed to be made of walnut wood, and the metal plates at the joints of the break-action were engraved with exquisite patterns. The side-by-side double barrel was engraved with two English letters, Purdey Beesley, and the over-and-under double barrel was engraved with J PURDEY \u0026 SONS LONDON.

Obviously, these belonged to two brands.

Chen Fan didn't recognize these two brands, but that wasn't important.

He turned his head and asked, "How much are these guns?"

Station Chief Zhou smiled, "20 yuan each. Which one do you like?"

As soon as he finished speaking, he suddenly patted his head, opened the drawer of his desk, and took out something wrapped in homespun cloth, "Do you want a short gun?"

After opening it, it turned out to be a beautiful small pistol with a holster.

As soon as Chen Fan saw it, his eyes lit up. It was the legendary PPK used by the Führer.

He didn't recognize many guns: Browning, Colt Python, Type 54, .38 Special, and then this PPK. This was standard equipment for German officers during World War II. Even the Führer chose this gun as his sidearm, and it was also a favorite in the collector's market later on.

Looking at the two high-end hunting rifles that looked extraordinary, and then looking at this PPK, Chen Fan couldn't help but be a little curious about the old man from the Victory Brigade.

Unfortunately, that person was gone, and no one knew where he got these guns from?

But that wasn't important. The key was that this famous gun would soon be his.

What an unexpected delight!

Chen Fan immediately said, "I want this one too. How much is it?"

Station Chief Zhou smiled, "This gun doesn't have many bullets, only two magazines. It'll probably be difficult to get bullets in the future. Just give what you think is appropriate."

Hearing these words, Chen Fan felt embarrassed.

So he gathered the three guns together and held out a hand, "How about 50 yuan?"

Station Chief Zhou immediately nodded, "That can buy a foal. He'll definitely be happy."

The corners of Chen Fan's mouth twitched slightly. This reference point was a bit unique.

Then he looked at the three guns on the table, inexplicably feeling like he was in an arms deal.

Speaking of which, with these three guns, he should be able to make it big, right?
