#91 - Targeting the wealthy

Chapter 91: Targeting the Rich

When the morning work ended, Chen Fan packed up his things and prepared to go home.

The grand market would be held in a week, and he wanted to see what he had to sell.

If possible, he wanted to take the cured meat and fish to the market to sell, earning a little more than he would at the cheap recycling station.

He also wanted to see if he could buy anything else.

He wasn't very familiar with this era, and didn't understand many things. It would be best to discuss it with Jiang Lili. If even she didn't know, he would have to ask Captain Yang.

Captain Zhang watched him put the small alarm clock in his pocket and immediately said, "Are you just going to carry it like that? Aren't you afraid of losing it?"

Alarm clocks were valuable items, costing more than ten yuan. Ordinary families didn't necessarily have one, and everyone treated them like treasures. How could you just put it in your pocket?

Chen Fan looked at him and asked in confusion, "Then how should I carry it?"

Captain Zhang looked around and rummaged through a cabinet in the corner of the back wall, finding a ball of fine hemp rope. He tore off more than half a meter, cut it with scissors, turned around and handed it to him, "Tie one end to your waistband and the other to the alarm clock, so you won't be afraid of losing it."

Chen Fan took the rope, and a scene flashed in his mind.

He was walking on the road with a hemp rope hanging from his pants. A person walked towards him, with a thin chain hanging from his chest. That person took out a pocket watch and came over to say, "Master, excuse me, my pocket watch isn't accurate. I want to check the time with you."

Then he would suddenly pull out the alarm clock, "It's 9:15 now."

The person would be dumbfounded, "Master, your pocket watch is quite unique."

Chen Fan couldn't help but shake his head, dispelling the scene in his mind. He decisively unbuttoned his cotton-padded jacket, then tied one end to his waistband and the other to the alarm clock, putting the alarm clock in his inside pocket, and then buttoning up the jacket so that others couldn't see it.

Captain Zhang nodded in satisfaction when he saw how careful he was, "You did a good job today. I'm giving you a verbal commendation. Continue to work hard this afternoon and achieve even better results."

Chen Fan nodded, "Yes."

Then he carried his toolbox and went home.

Perhaps it was because his physique and agility had improved, but now it only took him more than 20 minutes to walk the road, nearly half the time it took him the first time he came here, and he wasn't even that tired.

As soon as he entered the courtyard, he saw many people sitting there. Men, women, old and young, were sitting in a large group, probably having brought out all the chairs, so that Jiang Lili could only stand at the door.

Chen Fan was stunned for a moment. What was going on today?

Usually, no one came to this educated youth spot, but today there were so many people. Could something major have happened again?

When Captain Yang saw Chen Fan coming back, he immediately stood up and said, "Xiao Chen, what's the deal with this grand market?"

The others also stood up and surrounded Chen Fan, making it seem like they were going to do something to him.

"The grand market?"

Chen Fan suddenly realized that they were all here for this?

He then said, "It's what the notice said, December 19th, Fifth Team of Gan Village. There's no need to sign up or queue up. When you get there, the police and militiamen will maintain order. Just listen to the arrangements."

Captain Yang, "We know all that. I just want to ask you, where did this notice come from?"

Chen Fan blinked, finally understanding their intention.

After all this, they just wanted to inquire about gossip.

Others don't know, but I know, and then I can explain the inside story to others, enjoying the worshipful gazes and feeling satisfied.

He immediately chuckled and said, "It was probably around 8 o'clock. A cadre from the commune called the brigade headquarters. Captain Zhang answered the phone. They announced this matter. Captain Zhang didn't delay at all. As soon as the broadcast ended, he immediately asked me to issue the notice. I came back as soon as I finished reading the notice."

Captain Yang blinked, obviously a little disappointed, "That's it?"

Chen Fan smiled, "Basically, that's it. I guarantee there's no embellishment."

He looked at the commune members whispering next to him and asked Captain Yang, "Captain, is our team going to the market?"

Captain Yang laughed, "Yes, of course. Whether we buy or sell, we'll go join in the fun."

Accountant Liu also smiled, "It's been ten years since we've had a rural market. I don't know if there's any difference from before."

Custodian Huang smacked his lips, "I guess the biggest difference will definitely be the number of people."

Captain Yang, "That's right. It's been ten years since we've had a market. This is the first time it's reopened. Anyone who can walk will definitely go to see the excitement."

Accountant Liu calculated with his fingers, "The entire commune has five brigades, and each brigade has three to four thousand people, making a total of eighteen or nineteen thousand. Even if only half of them go, there will be eight or nine thousand people. The militia company in Gan Village will probably all be on duty."

Captain Yang looked at him, "More than that, there are also four or five thousand people in the commune. December 19th happens to be a Sunday, and the units are all on holiday. How could they not go?"

Custodian Huang, "The Yangshan Commune across the river to the west and the Qingshan Commune across the river to the east will probably have people coming."

Accountant Liu nodded in agreement, "The places where they live by the river are closer than our first few teams. Some people will definitely go. The number of people that day might reach fifteen thousand."

Chen Fan was stunned. Could a small rural market gather so many people?

Was it a bit too much to mobilize everyone?

Seeing that they couldn't get any other inside information from Chen Fan, everyone discussed and walked out.

Seeing that Captain Yang and the others were also preparing to leave, Chen Fan quickly stepped forward and asked in a low voice, "Captain, I also want to participate. Can I?"

Captain Yang, "Yes, of course. There's no threshold for that. Anyone can go."

Chen Fan, "Then I want to sell something. Is that okay?"

Captain Yang, "Yes, why not?"

Then he looked at his room, turned his face, and smiled, "You do have quite a few things. It's good to sell some."

After a pause, he added, "I'll do a count later to see how many people in the team want to sell things. If there are many, we might as well get two carts to go."

Chen Fan was overjoyed, "Good, good, that's good."

Then he clasped his hands tightly and asked with a slightly shy expression, "Captain, I know that industrial products can't be sold at the market. I just want to ask, can I sell cooked food?"

"Cooked food?"

Captain Yang looked at him in surprise, "You want to set up a stall?"

A few traces of shyness appeared on Chen Fan's face, "I just want to get some turtle meat to sell. Hairy chickens cost 1.1 yuan per catty. I sell cooked turtle meat. 1 yuan per catty should be okay, right?"

Captain Yang smacked his lips, "That's a way to do it."

Then he looked at him, "When we used to have markets, some people sold roasted sweet potatoes, sesame cakes, and steamed buns, but I've never seen anyone sell cooked meat. But it shouldn't be against the rules. You can try."

Custodian Huang said from the side, "But don't make too much. Make a little less. If they don't allow you to sell it, you won't lose too much."

Although the turtles don't cost any money, they still need oil and seasonings. It's not good to waste them.

Chen Fan smiled, "It's okay, I can't make too much anyway. If they don't allow me to sell it, I'll bring it back. Anyway, the temperature is low in winter. It won't spoil for a month or so. I can eat a little every day, and I can finish it myself."

If the sun is out, there can still be some temperature under the sun, but when there is no sun, the weather here is really like a refrigerator, and the cold air is poured straight into the bones.

He has only been here for just over ten days, and the temperature is getting lower and lower. It will definitely be colder in a few days. The temperature will not start to rise until the middle and late January. There will definitely be no problem storing cooked food during this period.

Originally, he didn't have the idea of selling cooked food, because very few rural people would spend money to buy food outside, at most buying a cake for their children.

But just now, when he heard Captain Yang say that the people from the commune would also come.

Those are all rich people who get paid. It's rare to have a market, so they definitely won't be too stingy. Even the most frugal people will have the urge to spend in that environment.

It just so happens that there are still 10 big turtles raised in the pigpen in the back. When the time comes, stew them all in one pot, put them in a bucket and take them over, and then build an earthen stove on the spot and steam them in a big pot. When the aroma comes out, it will drift with the wind…

Chen Fan didn't believe that those rich people from the commune could control their wallets when they smelled the aroma!
