Chapter 7
"James, your face is too ugly."
James raised his head buried in the teacup, only to see his mother looking at him with searching eyes.
She looked fantastic, as usual, her long blonde hair perfectly groomed, each strand in its place.
"I didn't sleep well," James admitted. He'd been thinking about Tristan's words all night, still hesitating and indecisive, and he was terribly depressed by his indecision.
"I knew it." Barbara looked sharply at her husband sitting on the other side of the table, "Your father has never figured it out, you are still a young man, you should work and rest—"
"Don't get used to him, Barbara," Arthur Grayson said dryly, staring at the newspaper in front of him. "He's 22, he's not a kid anymore, it's time for him to run the family business."
"If you really know your son, he wants nothing to do with the family business."
"He's from the Graysons."
"I regret every day that he was born in this family." Barbara muttered loudly, lest Arthur would not hear.
Arthur raised his gray eyebrows, fixed his sharp eyes on his wife, and then turned to his son.James quickly corrected his sitting posture and straightened his back.Arthur stared at him silently for a moment, then said--
"James, I'm going to be in the Houses of Parliament until the afternoon; you can settle the meeting with Richard Whitford all by yourself in my absence."
James tried his best, but still couldn't help showing a bitter look.Business meetings had never been his strong suit, and Richard Whitford—the billionaire head of Whitford Industries—was no easy feat.
Barbara said, "Don't make that look, honey, you're going to get wrinkles early." She turned her head and scolded Arthur, "What are you kidding? That man is a criminal, how can you leave James alone he."
James usually hated being smothered by his mother, but he didn't mind this time; he didn't have the energy to deal with that Richard Whitford right now.
But Arthur was not overwhelmed by his wife. "James should learn to deal with this kind of people alone. Besides, James and his son are friends, things should be easier."
Barbara laughed and said, "You know what. Luke is a good boy, he is nothing like his criminal father."
"Whitford did not commit any crimes, he is one of the richest men in all of Europe."
Barbara snorted coldly: "He has no connection with the Italian and Russian mafia, everyone knows that."
"As long as there is no evidence, these words can only be regarded as malicious rumors." Arthur said, "Don't judge the business, it's none of your business."
"What's about my son is about me."
"James sure doesn't think so, does he, James?"
"Yes, dear, tell your father that your mother is right."
James really wanted to cover his ears and pretend nothing happened.
He looked at him, then at her, and his heart sank continuously. He realized that there was no affection between his parents at all. They had loved each other before, but now there was no love left, only bitterness and hostility.
He doesn't want to be like them.
He doesn't want to be them.
James stood up and said, "I have to go."
Without looking at his parents, he strode out of the room, went outside, and got into the car.
Ryan is off today, and he may still be at Zach's house, and he may even be asleep.Although the timing is not good, James really can't wait any longer, and his courage should fade away if he waits any longer.
Maybe his heartfelt words will ruin their friendship.Maybe.Probably.But it's better than living like a parent, better than living a lie and being a miserable person.
He can't be that kind of person.
