[Pride and Prejudice] Liz's Little Vest
Chapter 50 The Truth Comes Out
The crow flew out from nowhere and landed on the stone in front of it.
"Bang bang—"
Two consecutive shots fired, and it was hit instantly, making a short and tragic cry. Then it lost its balance and wobbled.
"Wickham is still struggling," Elizabeth said. "He wanted to rush over to deal with us, but he didn't have the courage to break the boat. So he took his anger out on the crow. What a poor crow."
"Your analysis is quite correct, Miss Elizabeth."
"So what's so mysterious about this statue, and why would Wickham be involved?" Elizabeth asked puzzled.
The bullet didn't go deep enough, and her wound is no longer bleeding now. However, there was still stabbing pain at the wound, and they had to rush to the hospital after the danger passed.
"I don't know. But there is a way for us to know immediately."
"Like them and smash the bust of Napoleon?"
"You are a very clever lady, Miss Elizabeth," said Darcy. "I have sent the coachman to inform the police, but they will be here soon. Then we need to go to the hospital quickly. As for the statue? What a wonderful place, let's find out later."
After calming down, Elizabeth began to agree with Darcy's decision.
If they evacuate quickly, there will be disturbances.Wickham would never allow them to leave like this, so the move of evacuation would instead make him quickly decide to deal with them.
In contrast, confronting each other quietly and waiting for the arrival of the police is the best choice.
Of course Elizabeth hoped that Wickham would linger again and again, at least not make a decision until the police arrived. She did not wish Mr. Darcy to shoot unless absolutely necessary. After all, it's about his reputation.
Regarding Darcy's decision, she said that it was impossible not to be moved.Because the reason why Darcy chose to confront at first was just to help her get revenge. But now is not the time to express emotion, the danger is still ahead.
The grass in front of her moved, Elizabeth's nerves tightened, and she subconsciously held Darcy's hand.
"Don't be afraid, Miss Elizabeth," said Darcy. "I am here."
He held Elizabeth's hand instead, and said, "Miss Elizabeth, if you want me to tell you, just give me your hand with peace of mind."
Elizabeth's ears turned red: "Mr. Darcy, you are taking advantage of others." But her hands turned sideways honestly, interlocking with Darcy's fingers.
Darcy smiled. Naturally, he was only joking to ease her nervousness. If it is good to bring up the old story again, he will not stimulate Elizabeth with the marriage proposal, especially at such a dangerous moment.
After another 10 minutes, the situation was deadlocked, and Wickham was still hesitant.
Every time the grass rustled, Elizabeth felt her heart jumping out of her throat. Not too worried about Darcy's injury - he said he was a good shot, and she believed it.But if he missed and killed Wickham because of the duel-she couldn't imagine how much it would stain the Darcy family.
The time axis seems to be stretched by rolling, moving half a second and a half second.
1 minute later.
The sound of horseshoes finally sounded, surrounding Xing from all directions, gradually becoming clearer and louder.
Both Elizabeth and Darcy breathed a sigh of relief.Wickham's chance to counterattack has been lost, and he can only catch it now.
"Mr. Darcy."
"Miss Elizabeth."
While waiting in the carriage, Elizabeth and Darcy ran into an old acquaintance they met two months ago.
"Mr. Holmes." "Dr. Watson."
"Miss Elizabeth," said Holmes, "you have been frightened." He took a blanket from the policeman, and Darcy caught it, and draped it over Elizabeth.
"Is the wound all right?" Watson asked.
Elizabeth rolled up her sleeves and gave Watson her arm.
"Fortunately, no blood vessels were injured. The prisoner's gun was not flexible enough. Obviously it's not as good as—" Watson glanced at Darcy's waist. "It's not as good as the gun on your friend."
"But we need to get this lady to the hospital as soon as possible," said Holmes. "Leave the rest to Constable Lestrade. Although the police in England are stupid, my friend is trustworthy."
The way back was three points more congested than the way we came. The four of them went to the hospital first, helped Elizabeth take out the bullet, and performed cumbersome bandaging. The doctor ordered to observe the patient for at least three days, and Darcy naturally accepted the task.
After coming out of the hospital, Holmes and Dr. Watson followed Elizabeth and Darcy to Mrs. Gardiner's house.
This startled her.
"Oh my! God, I'm going to be as crazy as Mrs. Bennet if this goes on," cried Mrs. Gardiner. "My dear Elizabeth, what's the matter with you?"
"I accidentally fell down when I got out of the carriage. Aunt Gardiner, don't worry. May I go to the study and chat with my friends?"
Mrs. Gardiner let them go, dubiously.
In the study, Elizabeth drew the curtains and lit the candles. The room changes from light to dark, and from dark to light.
"Miss Elizabeth, I would like to pay for this bust of Napoleon. What do you think?" Holmes asked after sitting down.
"How much do you think the statue is worth?" Elizabeth asked.
"I would have given ten pounds for it," replied Holmes.
"But I think it's worth more than that." Elizabeth blinked. "We nearly lost our lives for it, after all. Well, Mr. Holmes, we're not joking. Mr. Darcy and I just thought we could learn to Two prisoners, smashed the bust of Napoleon. What do you think?"
Holmes laughed loudly: "Then can I ask you to help you?"
"Please, Mr. Holmes."
Holmes took a clean white cloth from a drawer and spread it on the table. Then he put the bust of Napoleon in the middle of the cloth, finally borrowed his pistol from Darcy, and slammed it down on top of the statue. The statue was instantly reduced to pieces[1].
Holmes stooped hastily to examine the fragments of the statue. Then, with a yelp of triumph, he held up a fragment with a round, dark thing embedded in it, like a raisin on a croissant[1].
He shouted: "Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce you to the famous Borgias black pearl [1]." He walked towards Darcy, "Of course, now this priceless pearl should be returned to its original owner La."
Darcy and Elizabeth were dumbfounded.Dr. Watson may have been familiar with Mr. Holmes' "tricks" for a long time, and now he only smiles faintly.
