Chapter 1
It is a universally acknowledged truth that a great king always seeks a lovely queen.
"Have you heard, Bilbo?" Pippin and Merry hurried to Bilbo, who was sitting comfortably on a bench outside Bag End, basking in the sun.
Bilbo looked up lazily at the young hobbit. "What do you hear?"
Pippin raised his arms exaggeratedly: "The manor on the other side of the river has finally been sold. It is said that the buyer is a human king!" Built by eccentric folk, hobbits seldom live in houses, so the manor has remained vacant.
Bilbo curled his lips boredly: "Humans have begun to come to the hobbit's territory. What good news is this?"
"Of course it's good news!" Pippin and Merry made expressions of "how can you not believe it" at the same time.
"Isn't it great news that the king is looking for a queen at Hobbiton?" said Merry. "The girls are talking about it!"
"This is Frodo's chance!" added Pippin.
Bilbo refilled his pipe. "I don't see what this has to do with Frodo." He took his pipe leisurely again.
"It's no secret that Frodo prefers boys," said Merry emphatically. In Hobbit culture, it’s not surprising that boys like boys, and generally speaking, no one deliberately hides it. There are even rumors that Hobbit boys can have offspring if they form a family with a male from a foreign race. This can be confirmed by man, for no hobbit—female or male—has ever been married to a foreigner. "None of us here is more beautiful and lovely than Frodo, and if the King of Men must marry a hobbit queen, Frodo has the best chance!" said Merry thoughtfully.
Bilbo choked on the smoke, knocked his pipe on a stone, and stood up: "Frodo loves the Shire, and he's doing well here! What hobbit does the great man want to marry?" Let the girl do as he pleases, but don't try to have my Frodo in his way!" he said, angrily going up the steps, pushing open the round green door, freshly painted, and looking back as he stepped through it. Say to the two young hobbits, "If you want a good breakfast, you're welcome in. If you're going to spread nonsense about the King of Men, go to someone else's house!" Close the door with a bang the door.
A little curly head poked out from behind a bush in Bag End garden. It was Sam the Gardener, and he asked his two hobbit companions who stood there impatiently, "Would Mr. Frodo like that?" Are you a king?"
Bilbo hoped that young Frodo had not heard the rumor, but in a small place like Hobbiton no news stayed overnight. That evening, Frodo, who had played wildly in the fields all day, ran back to Bag End excitedly, with sweat shining and an excited smile on his round, white and tender face: "Bilbo! Bilbo! You heard ?"
"I heard you trampled the peonies at the Brandybuck's!" said Bilbo dryly. "Wipe your feet clean and get ready for supper!"
"That was Pippin's idea..." Frodo pursed his lips slightly, as honestly as a wronged child.
The supper was good--always good, every meal at Bag End, and no hobbit was ever so poor as to afford six good meals, and such things as famine exist only in legends.
Usually, apple pie and blueberry jam always held Frodo's attention, but today he was a little absent-minded. He looked at his uncle across the table and said cautiously: "Bilbo, I heard that a king is coming. Hobbiton, a real king!" Frodo's idea of a king was limited to those wonderful stories Bilbo told him, and he had never seen a real person. People or things are of great interest.
"A human king bought a piece of land in Hobbiton, that's all," said Bilbo, showing no interest. "No one said the king would leave his kingdom and live here, he just added It's just a piece of property."
"Oh!" Frodo bowed his head in disappointment. The roast in front of him was not so delicious.
However, things don't always turn out as Bilbo hoped.Early the next morning, Bilbo was sitting on the bench outside the house smoking his pipe as usual. Just as he was exhaling a beautiful smoke ring, a carriage came to his house with two people laughing undisguisedly, which caused his death. The second smoke ring failed.
The carriage was filled with all kinds of fireworks, and there were two people sitting there, one big and one small, one of them was a tall wizard with a white beard, wearing a pointed hat, and the other petite figure was Frodo, Frodo Luo Duo laughed very happily, and his little curly hair trembled.
"Bilbo!" Frodo jumped out of the carriage joyfully, and ran to his uncle. "Gandalf says the King is really coming!"
"Gandalf?" Bilbo frowned, looking at his nephew, then at the wizard with the pointed hat.
The wizard had stepped in front of him, blocking his sunlight.
"Good morning." Bilbo didn't know what to say.
"What do you mean?" said the wizard, looking down at Bilbo inquiringly, "do you wish me a good morning, or that the morning will be good whether I want it or not? Or perhaps you mean that you feel very well this morning? Or are you simply trying to show that this morning is going to be okay? Huh?"
"Both." Bilbo wondered at the wizard's chatter. "What's the matter?"
"Bilbo Baggins, it seems that you are used to living a leisurely life." The wizard looked at Bilbo's somewhat fat body. "It's time to go for a walk, to a place other than the Shire!"
"Outside the Shire? No, no, no, none of us would think so!" Bilbo objected. "Wait, how do you know my name?"
"I am Gandalf," said the wizard, as if Bilbo should have heard his name long ago. "Gandalf is—me!"
Bilbo searched the name in his memory, and something suddenly came to him: "Are you that... Gandalf the Wizard with the beautiful fireworks?" He had seen Gandalf's fireworks show as a boy, when his mother was still alive, The residents of Hobbiton all gathered by the river, shouting excitedly and toasting again and again.
"See, you remember me, son of Belladonna Took," said Gandalf, "though only my fireworks."
"I didn't expect you to still do this!" Bilbo didn't necessarily miss Gandalf so much.
Frodo broke in anxiously: "Bilbo, Gandalf says he is the king's friend, and the king will be in Hobbiton soon!"
"Frodo is very much like you when you were a child, Bilbo." Gandalf patted Frodo's head, looked at Bilbo proudly, and waited for his reaction. "He wanted to see the king of men very much, just like when you were a child looking for elves everywhere." Same."
"You'd better not cram such fanciful fantasies into his little head!" Bilbor pulled Frodo back, "that king will mess up the life of the hobbits, and keep us from supper! "
Gandalf was not offended, he smiled meaningfully: "Bilbo, this is a good chance for you, I can see that."
Bilbo looked at Gandalf inexplicably and displeasedly: "Good morning!" Then he closed the green door tightly.
