[HP] Three thousand days of innocence
Chapter 1 Rehash
Ginny Weasley was determined that one day she would show up to work on time for the department's weekly briefing.
Unfortunately, that day was not today.
She wakes up to find that it's not the new "Icarus and Vance" song playing on her alarm clock radio (a stupid song called "The Minotaur Mix" that gives her a headache) but the neighbor next door Loud sex oral sex sounds. It just means she overslept for almost 45 minutes and nothing stopped her from being terribly late for her weekly meeting whose start time never changed.
Of course, the fact that the neighbor cow has something she doesn't have at the moment makes things even worse.
Then, after she tried unsuccessfully to wash her hair and brush her teeth at the same time, she found that she had inadvertently ate the last of Weetabix yesterday morning - so she ate breakfast quickly.Ginny ate a piece of stale dry wheat bran muffin that was left over at some point, hurriedly stuffed the remaining documents into her bag, and stumbled out the door. The wall of the wall let out a cry of despair.
damn cow.
She came to the public lavatory, which served as the entrance for Ministry staff, just as Percy entered. "You need a new alarm clock," he said haughtily, and she rolled her eyes and walked into the cubicle next to him.
"You need a partner," she shot back, before rushing herself into the Ministry of Magic hall.
"You hurt me," he said exaggeratedly, though he smiled and winked at her as they walked into the elevator. "Mom is having dinner with everyone on Saturday night, and she asked me to pass on her invitation."
"Will Harry be going?" asked Ginny, keeping her eyes on the floor numbers.
"Yes, but—"
"Then tell her I can't go, because dear Harry sent me to follow someone that night, and I'll have to work till midnight at least."
Percy whispered, "Who would have thought that the Boy Who Lived Twice would be such a loser?"
"I should have told you years ago," Ginny muttered, saying goodbye to her brother as the elevator finally reached her floor. With a wave of his hand, the metal door clanged shut behind her.
The Auror office isn't quite as frantic and busy as it was during the height of the second war against Tom Riddle, but that doesn't mean there isn't a ton of work to do.This morning, the junior staff's booth was empty because they were all off for a meeting that Ginny was supposed to be attending at least twenty minutes before.Ginny stumbled across the maze of desks, tossed her bag into her cramped workspace, and burst through the conference room door in a way that was sure to make dear Tonks smile with pride.
Harry looked up from the minutes, his eyes behind his spectacles very cold. "Thank you for joining us, Weasley," he said, and went on to debrief.Ron, who sat to Harry's right, gave her an annoyed look, and she gave him the same look, before plopping down on the seat at the end of the table.
After Ginny and Harry split about a year ago, Harry started referring to Ginny by her last name.Along with that comes the "we don't live together anymore so I don't have to be nice to you" and the "you don't see things my way so you get all the crappy assignments" measures.Ginny hoped that they would break up quietly and simply, but that hope had long since been dashed, because Harry was as cunning and understanding as the Falcons at Quidditch.
Almost everyone was on his side in this one, and it was the final nail in the coffin.
"Congratulations to O'Connell, Johnson and Whan for arresting Yaxley last week," said Harry wearily. There was faint applause from among the Aurors, and Ginny saw the annoyance on Harry's face grow more pronounced - he clearly hoped he was the one to catch the Death Eater, as this operation was a big deal for the Ministry of Magic. A huge success, it attracted great attention from the media and the public. "I've spoken to Hermione, and Yaxley's trial date is set for the end of this month," Harry continued. "However, this is just a formality. He may be sentenced to life imprisonment."
"You deserve it," said Ron sullenly, and Harry smiled at him.
"Okay. There are still people on our most wanted list who need to be arrested." Harry said, flipping through a pile of parchment next to him. "Any news on this?"
"Someone found Travers in a tour group at Inchholm Abbey last week," said Romilda Vine, her dark eyes looking eagerly at Harry. "He's all alone, trying to infiltrate Muggles." She snorted. "The key word is 'trying'."
Harry laughed and made notes on his list, which was full of scribbled notes and crossed out names.Shortly after he finished his Auror training, he made his first list of Death Eaters and other casualties of the war, and five years later, only a few names remained. "Very well, I will let you and Dawlish go to Scotland to have a look. If you find him again, report it immediately." Harry bit his lower lip and ran his fingers through the rest of the list. "Only Labastan Lestrange and Draco Malfoy remain." He looked up from the parchment and looked at them. "Honestly, no one has heard from Malfoy at all?"
"Not at all," Chambers said.
Harry sighed and leaned back in his seat. "Read me the report on him again?"
Chambers turned to Ginny, who suddenly realized that she was the one with all the information on the low priority cases. She rummaged through the jumble of papers until she found the one marked "Draco Malfoy," and opened it. "As far as we know, the last person to see him was Nearly Headless Nick," Ginny read from someone's illegible notes, "at Hogwarts the morning after the final battle. Nick reported, He saw Malfoy leave the Great Hall and head towards the Slytherin dungeons, when he stopped, looked around, and walked towards the castle gates. That was eight years ago, and since , and no one has contacted him, nor seen him."
"Well, that's not accurate," Romilta interjected, raising her eyebrows. "A similar young man was seen in Florence about six years ago, but when we went to investigate, there was no trace of him."
"Then we'll find him in Milan and Paris, too, if we dig deeper," said Ginny, a little tartly, wishing she had eaten something heartier than a moldy muffin. "We don't know if it was him, as these sightings have never been confirmed. Light blond hair is not a uniquely Malfoy trait."
"It really stands out in a crowd," said Romilda, studying her nails.
"But Malfoy isn't worth actively investigating in the first place." Angelina spoke before Ginny could say anything she regretted. "Why on earth are we arresting him? He's suspected of being involved in an attack that may have nothing to do with him? Who cares if wizards like Travers and Lestrange are on the loose?"
Unfortunately, that day was not today.
