Chapter 1: Preface

Dissociative Identity Disorder (Multiple Personality Disorder)

A mental disorder in which the patient has two or more identities and personalities at the same time, and his behavior is dominated by his multiple personalities.

Forgetting is some important situation of the individual, including the inability to recall personal identity. The content of forgetting is different in different personality manifestations, that is, the forgotten content in this personality is clearly remembered in another personality. In the patient's inner world Some personalities can know the existence of other personalities and act on them. For example, in a patient, personality A does not know that other personality forms exist at the same time, but other personality forms know what personality A is doing, just like watching others behavior. Other personalities may or may not know the existence of personality A, but they cannot have a common consciousness with personality A (multiple personalities are aware of things at the same time).

Dissociative identity disorder can be very severe and long-lasting, resulting in functional deficits in patients. Patients are more likely to attempt suicide and are thought to have a higher success rate than other mental illnesses.

Patients usually have a spectrum of symptoms similar to other neuroses and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, affective disorders and epilepsy. Most patients have depression, anxiety (sweating, rapid pulse, palpitations), fear , panic attacks, physical discomfort, eating disorders, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Suicidal ideation, attempts, and self-injury are common.

Personality switching and intermittent amnestic disorders often make the patient's personal life a mess. Due to the interaction between the different personalities, patients with dissociative disorders often report hearing internal dialogue and other personality comments and voices directed at the patient. These voices are considered It's an auditory hallucination.
