Pride and Prejudice of Jane Eyre

Chapter 13 "Friends"

When Jane Eyre entered the living room holding Adele's hand, the clock struck seven o'clock.

There was no one in the living room, and Adela sat on a small stool, restless. She kept staring at the roses in the vase, and couldn't bear it any longer. She came to touch Jane Eyre, "Miss Jane, can I have a rose?"

Jane Eyre looked at the vase, which was filled with fiery red roses. The flowers bloomed just right, which is not common in this cold winter, and she guessed they ordered them from the greenhouses on the edge of town.Jane Eyre looked around, but there was no one else, so she picked one carefully, and helped Adela pin it on her belt.Adele was finally satisfied.

"Miss Eyre, it is not honorable to 'steal' roses."

Jane Eyre was startled, and when she looked back, it was the proud Mr. Darcy.

"Mr. Darcy, you always seem to like to appear behind others." Jane Eyre thought of her two conversations with him, which started with fright.

"You seem to like to answer irrelevant questions too, Miss Eyre." Mr. Darcy came in through the arched door of the drawing room. He was so tall that he even had to bow his head when he passed the arched door.

Jane Eyre touched Adele and motioned for her luggage.Adele curtseyed hastily, still nervous about being caught picking roses.

"This is Miss Warren under the guardianship of Mr. Rochester." Jane Eyre also stood up from the table and saluted.

Mr. Darcy bowed slightly, which was considered a greeting.

"I think even a rose would be honored to be pinned around the waist of a beautiful young lady. It has fulfilled its mission." Jane Eyre began to argue.

"I agree with your point of view, Miss Jane." Mr. Rochester led his guests into the living room.Following behind him was still the same Miss Ingram. She changed into a rose-colored dress that was completely different from yesterday's style. She was straight and arrogant. She looked like Mrs. Ingram next to her. A younger version. Then there are those gentlemen, ladies and wives from yesterday, all dressed in gorgeous costumes.Jane Eyre noticed that the milder Miss Mary Ingram did not appear.

Mr. Darcy did not look at Jane Eyre again. He also sat down one after another with other guests.

Adele walked towards the ladies and solemnly said, "Good evening, ladies and ladies." The French she often blurted out has been completely corrected into English by Jane Eyre.

Miss Ingram stood at the seat by the fireplace that Mr. Rochester often occupied, straightened her waist, looked down at Adele, and said ironically, "Oh! What a funny little puppet."

"Is this the child under Mr. Rochester's custody?"

"If you ask me, Mr. Rochester is too kind..." Mrs. Ingram was about to express her 'unique' opinion.

"What a lovely child!" said the two young girls, interrupting Mrs. Ingram's eloquence. "Come here, child, and sit with me," said one of them, Louisa, and she Sit a little apart from another girl, Amy, and leave a seat for Adele.

Adele glanced at Jane Eyre, and Jane Eyre nodded, so she happily sat beside them. This pretty French rose attracted the attention of almost all the ladies and wives, and Louisa was talking to her in French.

Miss Ingram took a bite from the other ladies, and her face looked even more indifferent, so she looked at Jane Eyre: "She listens to you—ha! Tutors always like to 'tame' that kind of skill."

Jane Eyre had already felt her malice from her cynicism to the governess the day before, and she didn't answer the words, but smiled neither humble nor humble.

"Oh! You laughed!" Miss Ingram was even angrier, her tone could be said to be sharp, "Are you provoking me? Miss Eyre."

"I didn't mean that, Miss Ingram." Jane Eyre couldn't figure out why she exploded at one o'clock today. Could it be that she was flattened by Mr. Rochester? "I'm just happy for Adele, she's loved by everyone."

Miss Ingram also seemed to realize her gaffe, snorted coldly, and walked towards the piano.Even Adele could see the disharmony here, and Jane Eyre gave her a comforting smile.

Jane Eyre felt that someone was looking at her, and turned her head to see that Mr. Rochester was looking in this direction.Jane Eyre did not know whether he was looking at herself or Miss Ingram. She went to the less crowded place on the other side and hid herself in the shadow of the huge vase.Apparently Miss Ingram was about to start playing, and she didn't want to attract the attention of the audience.

Miss Ingram sat at the piano, looking as elegant as she could. The hem of her skirt was scattered like a grand rose.It has to be said that Miss Ingram's beauty is enough to confuse most gentlemen. She began to play a beautiful piece, and at the same time she was talking to someone, obviously trying to make her play so skillful and bold that distraction from chatting couldn't go wrong. After the song was finished, it won the praise of the whole house.

"What a perfect piece of music!" Mr. Rochester took the lead in applauding and praised.

Miss Ingram showed a proud smile: "Thank you for your compliment, sir."

"Oh! my rose! Do you remember a song you did with Mr. Rochester some years ago? Why don't you play another one, Mr. Rochester?" said Mrs. Ingram. "Blanche?"

"Now, I will accompany you, sir." Mr. Rochester nodded slightly.

The high-pitched piano accompaniment sounded, this is a pirate song.Obviously, Miss Ingram is really proficient at the piano, and can talk about different styles of music deeply. After the prelude ended, Mr. Rochester's thick, mellow and powerful bass joined in. Everyone stopped talking and moving their hands, and looked at them.

Jane Eyre didn't quite understand their art, and began to observe others: Mrs. Ingram looked at her daughter with a proud face, and she looked at Mr. Rochester with satisfaction. Lord Ingram almost drew the cards in his hand. Unsteady.Louisa Ashton and Amy Ashton seemed a little unconcerned. Their mother had a peaceful face, but the jealousy in her eyes was about to burn.Mrs. Dent seemed to be enjoying the music, tapping her fingers on the sofa cushions.Sir George and Mr. Lean held coffee and watched indifferently. As for Mr Darcy...

"It's really a pair of lovers, isn't it?" Jane Eyre lowered her voice and said, looking at the gentleman beside her, they seemed to be very destined, they always wanted to avoid the crowd, and they always stood together by coincidence.

"That's not true! Miss Eyre. I don't believe you can't see it?" Mr. Darcy kept his eyes on Mr. Rochester and Miss Ingram. He stood upright without turning his head. If he hadn't heard him speak, but There was no one else around them, and Jane Eyre wondered if he was talking to herself.

"Perhaps there is love in Miss Ingram's eyes—only a little. I don't think these loves can overwhelm the desire for wealth." Mr. Darcy said indifferently.

Jane Eyre was taken aback by his directness: "It's not a gentleman's behavior to talk about a lady after a queen."

"You're not exactly a lady anyway, are you?"

"Ok?"

"I saw you talking with Mr. Rochester this morning. With all due respect, ma'am, there is a big gap between you and Mr. Rochester—you are not from the same world."

Jane Eyre was startled when she heard the first half of his sentence, but she couldn't laugh or cry when she heard the second half: "I think you misunderstood, Mr. Darcy. My relationship with him is not what you imagined."

"What did I guess?"

"..." Jane Eyre took a deep breath, "If there is a relationship, it is just an employment relationship. I am the tutor hired by him, and he is the guardian of my students."

Mr. Darcy finally looked at her condescendingly and sized her up: "Mr. Rochester told me that you are friends."

"Oh! My friend." Jane Eyre suddenly smiled and said, "I'm very honored."

"I'm curious why Mr. Rochester became friends with a...'teacher'." As soon as he finished speaking, the singing and piano sound stopped. The crowd erupted in admiration, and Mr. Rochester's modest thanks. Miss Ingram looked proud and barbaric.Completely different from the excitement over there, Jane Eyre and Mr. Darcy fell silent in the shadows.

"I'm very glad that Mr. Rochester is willing to treat me as a friend, even though we only had a few unpleasant conversations." Jane Eyre broke the silence behind the uproar, "Although I thought he was arrogant and weird when we first met—— Ah! I accidentally said it—but he is a good gentleman, at least willing to respect me as a governess. . . ”

"...No matter when I get married, my husband must be my foil! What I want is unique loyalty, and there must be no rivals on my throne!..."

"It seems that Miss Ingram does not understand this 'respect'!" Mr. Darcy said deadpan. But from his calm tone, Jane Eyre actually noticed a trace of schadenfreude.

"..." Jane Eyre didn't understand why this arrogant gentleman actually regarded her as the object of 'tucao'.She ascribed this to the fact that Mr. Rochester had perhaps said many good things for her.Jane Eyre looked at the clock on the wall, it was just after nine o'clock. "Excuse me sir, this 'tutor' is about to perform her duties." Jane Eyre bowed briefly and walked towards Adele.

Mr. Darcy watched Jane Eyre greet the ladies, and took Miss Adele Warren from among them, firmly but gently.Mr. Rochester's attention seemed to be partly on her at any moment, watching them leave together, he took a sip of his wine and dealt with that "Miss Queen".
