Chapter 1 Preface

When it comes to Sarajevo, many people know it.

But go a step further and ask, where is this city? Why is this place so famous?Might have to think about it.

Most people’s memories of Sarajevo may still be in the famous “Assassination of Sarajevo” in middle school history textbooks——Austro-Hungarian Archduke Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo, which opened the prelude to the First World War.But in fact, this city has experienced far more than just one assassination case.

Sarajevo, the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, was one of the most important cities in the world throughout the 20th century. To tell about this city, we must first tell the story of the Balkan Peninsula. It is a complex and bloody history, involving many peoples, ideologies and political ideas. This chapter only makes a brief introduction to the situation of the Balkan Peninsula in the second half of the 20th century, so that readers can understand the historical background and social culture related to this article.

After World War II, a socialist country emerged in the Balkan Peninsula, next door to Italy—the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (hereinafter collectively referred to as the "Southern Federation").It is a multi-ethnic unified country established under the leadership of President Josep Broz Tito, consisting of 6 union republics and 2 socialist autonomous provinces.

In terms of ethnic composition, Serbia is the largest ethnic group in the Southern Federation, and other major ethnic groups include Bosniaks, Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro. In this regard, China and the Southern Federation have similarities. China is also a unified multi-ethnic socialist country. The Han nationality is the largest ethnic group in the population. Other ethnic groups include Uyghur, Bai, and Zhuang.

The ethnic question is the most important and the main one in the Balkans.Since all the ethnic groups in the Balkan Peninsula have a strong desire for independence, the situation of peaceful reunification did not last long. In 1989, the powerful leader Tito died. In 1990, the national constitution was amended, and the political system was changed to a parliamentary republic, realizing free elections. In 1991, Croatia and Slovenia became independent, and the Southern Federation fell apart.

After seeing successful cases, Bosnia and Herzegovina also came up with independent ideas. The Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the full name of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the six republics of the Southern Federation. The population is mainly composed of Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats.

1992年2月29日-3月1日,波黑举行了关于独立的全民公投,获得了压倒性的支持票数。3月3日,波黑宣布独立。

In the process of Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence, the Serbs have been strongly resisting. As the most populous nation in the Southern Federation, the Serbs aspire to be controlled by the Serbs throughout the western part of the Balkan Peninsula and establish a unified country.By 1989, the Southern Federation was actually controlled by the Serbs, but as national independence continued, the territory controlled by the Serbs was gradually reduced.

In April 1992, the Serb armed forces and the Yugoslav People's Army surrounded Sarajevo and began a two-year war, known in history as the "Bosnia and Herzegovina Civil War."

During the war, Sarajevo suffered a 1421-day siege. The Serb armed forces and the People's Army carried out inhumane massacres and "ethnic cleansing" of civilians in the city, resulting in 6 Bosnian civilian soldiers casualties.

The background of this article took place in January 1992, three months before the official launch of the "Bosnia and Herzegovina Civil War".

At this time, the Southern Federation had already left the socialist camp and realized a parliamentary republic.Bosnian independence referendum is on the agenda. In Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina at this time, ethnic conflicts were already very sharp, and the conflicts continued to escalate and expand. The three main ethnic groups - Serbia, Bosniak and Croatia formed a tripartite relationship.

The protagonists of this article are Serbs and Bosniaks. Due to the historical and realistic hatred between the two nations, there will be an insurmountable gap between the two sides in terms of ideas.
