Until the 15th year of Wanli, the central government of the Ming Dynasty granted Sonam Gyatso the title of "Duoerzhichang" (meaning "Vajra Holder"), granted him a seal, and allowed him to pay tribute. This was the first time that the lineage of the Dalai Lama was awarded by the Central Plains court.

Until the ninth year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty, the fifth Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, led a crowd from Tibet to Beijing for a pilgrimage.
