withered lover

Chapter 1 First Meeting

At one o'clock in the morning, Du Zhinian finished reading the last page of the paper and closed the document.

He stood up, moving his stiff shoulders and neck, making toothache sounds from his joints.

It was Du Zhinian's turn to be on duty tonight. The temperature had dropped sharply recently. After checking the room and confirming the patient's condition, he returned to the slightly warmer office.

Du Zhinian was the only one in the office late at night. After finishing the thesis, his brain was temporarily unable to think deeply because of sleepiness, so he planned to take a nap.

Before lying down, Du Zhinian felt that this might be the only night he could rest quietly this month, but as soon as he closed his eyes, the door of the office was pushed open from the outside.

"Doctor Du." The nurse held the door and panted, "I just brought in a patient who said he fell down the stairs and was unconscious when he was found, with a two-centimeter open wound on his head."

Du Zhinian propped his forehead and squeezed the space between his brows wearily, "After the wound is treated, I'll do a CT scan. I'll be there right away."

There was a doctor on duty in the Imaging Department tonight, and the CT results came out very quickly. After reading it, Du Zhinian hurried to the inpatient department.

Late at night, the corridors of the hospital were empty, and the howling night wind came in through the gaps in the windows, making a terrifying sound.

Du Zhinian walked lightly and walked through the palely lit corridor. In the empty corridor, the sounds of breathing and heels hitting the tiles could be vaguely heard.

He pushed open the door of the ward, and the nurse was infusing the patient.

The ward was very quiet, only one light was on, and the warm light quietly dispelled the chill of the night.

Du Zhinian slowed his breathing, glanced at the gauze on the patient's head, and said in a low voice, "There is nothing wrong with the CT. After waking up, let him stay in the hospital for observation for a few days, and arrange to be discharged after the stitches are removed."

"Okay." The nurse replied in a low voice.

She stuck the infusion needle with tape, put the patient's hand gently on the bed, and was about to pull up the sleeve that had slipped off during the infusion, when Du Zhinian, who was watching from the side, suddenly stretched out her hand.

Du Zhinian pulled up the sleeve of the hospital gown, and the red and swollen scars and large bruises hidden under the fabric were directly exposed to the eyes of the two of them.

Before the light fell on the patient's body, the shadow it cast almost merged with the bruises on his body, and the sight was blocked by the wide sleeves of the hospital gown, Du Zhinian almost missed these marks.

He pulled up the patient's arm and looked at it for a while, and pressed his fingers lightly along the scar a few times, and found that the bruise on the arm was very new, and the red and swollen wound was still oozing blood, which should have been injured recently.

Du Zhinian frowned, "This is not an injury caused by falling down the stairs, what about his family?"

"I didn't come, and I still entrust Dr. Zheng to pay the fee." The nurse replied nonchalantly.

This private hospital was invested by a wealthy local businessman. Although it also treats ordinary patients, in fact, it mainly serves people in the circle of wealthy and wealthy businessmen. The private VIP ward often receives some "special" patients. It is also common for doctors to take care of the aftermath of patients.

So Du Zhinian guessed that this patient was probably sent by a boss who had a personal relationship with Zheng Yi.

Du Zhinian let out a "tsk" and said displeasedly, "Okay."

He folded his arms and said to the little nurse beside him who was at a loss, "Go ahead."

The nurse nodded and quickly left the ward.

There was a faint sound of the door lock closing behind him, Du Zhinian supported the railing of the hospital bed, leaned down slightly and looked at the man lying on the hospital bed.

The wound on the man's arm had been covered by a hospital gown, his forehead was wrapped in gauze, and there was a line of dry blood near the hairline.

Du Zhinian touched it lightly, and the blood scab stuck to his skin fell off.

He patted the reddish-brown fine powder off his fingers, and brushed away the scattered hair on the man's forehead.

The man's eyes were closed, his face was pale, blood clots stuck between his slightly long hair, and there were a few small wounds on his lips. He looked very embarrassed, but from the outline of his facial features, it could be seen that he was quite handsome and gentle.

Du Zhinian stared at him for a while, then his eyes fell on the bedside card again.

The patient's name was written on the bedside card. The nurse was a little anxious when writing by hand, and half of the last letter of the man's name was erased.

Du Zhinian lowered his head and used the light to recognize the word from the scratches on the card.

"Shen Guiwan." He silently said the man's name in his heart.

Du Zhinian stayed in front of Shen Guiwan's hospital bed for a while, but was quickly called away by the nurse.

He had been busy all night, and managed to stay up until early morning. The nurse who was on duty yesterday told him that Shen Guiwan woke up late.

Du Zhinian didn't have time to go back to the office to drink water, so he hurried to the ward, and when he opened the door, he saw Shen Guiwan sitting on the bed.

He raised his head slightly and looked at the banyan tree outside the window. From Du Zhinian's perspective, he could only see his emaciated back and the back of his head covered with bandages.

The banyan tree outside the window was still lush and green in late autumn, Shen Guiwan was alone in the ward, Du Zhinian always felt a little desolate looking at it.

With his hands in his pockets, he walked to Shen Guiwan's hospital bed, and called out, "Shen Guiwan."

The person whose name was called turned his head slowly, the dim light of the morning slipped away from his face, but Du Zhinian could see his face clearly.

Shen Guiwan is as beautiful as Du Zhinian imagined, even more beautiful than the people he has dated before, but there is a coldness in the eyebrows and eyes, especially those dark eyes, which are so cold that there is no warmth.

Du Zhinian smiled politely when he met Shen Guiwan's gaze, and asked warmly, "You fell down the stairs last night and were sent to the hospital, remember?"

"Remember." Shen Guiwan replied.

His voice was a little hoarse due to the lack of water, and his tone was very cold. He was clearly answering a question, but it sounded like he was saying "it has nothing to do with you".

Du Zhinian didn't care, and continued to ask: "Do you feel dizzy? Do you feel like vomiting?"

Shen Guiwan's CT showed no hemorrhage, but the brain structure was complex, Shen Guiwan appeared comatose again, and Du Zhinian was worried that there would be sequelae.

Facing the doctor's question, Shen Guiwan looked away again.

There were a few sparrows on the branches outside the window, Shen Guiwan looked at them for a while, and then replied in a cold voice: "No."

The patient didn't cooperate, so Du Zhinian didn't ask any more questions.

He loosened his shoulders, stood behind Shen Guiwan, looking at that pale but delicate side face.

The early morning after autumn is always very cold, the sky is gray, the sun cannot be seen, and there is even a bit of chill in the air.

Shen Guiwan looked at the sparrow, Du Zhinian looked at him, the two of them stayed quietly for a while, until there was a slight sound from the branches.

The sparrow hopped back and forth on the branch and then flew away. The branch shook slightly, and a few withered and yellow leaves fell from the branch.

The branches gradually calmed down, Du Zhinian leaned over slightly and lifted Shen Guiwan's sleeves, revealing the wounds hidden under the hospital gown, "These wounds don't come from falling down the stairs."

"Do you want me to call the police for you?"

Du Zhinian guessed that this beautiful man must have suffered unbearable torture before he was sent to the hospital with scars all over his body.Although the dean gave repeated orders not to meddle in other people's affairs, and Du Zhinian had never interfered before, but towards Shen Guiwan, he inexplicably felt a little different.

"No need." Shen Guiwan rejected Du Zhinian's kindness.

He pulled back his sleeve from Du Zhinian's hand, the movement was very light, and his fingers accidentally touched the back of Du Zhinian's hand.

Shen Guiwan's hands were very cold, and Du Zhinian felt a faint chill from the touched place on the back of his hand.

He resisted the urge to grab this hand, and watched Shen Guiwan pull down his sleeve to cover his arm.

Shen Guiwan hid the injury on his arm, looked up into Du Zhinian's eyes, and said to him, "Thank you."
