Chapter 3 Joining the Army and Physical Examination

"The messy 40s were also the glorious 40s."

— Howard Stark

"So you really don't go to the exhibition site but stay at..." Howard looked at the tables and chairs in the corner with disgust. "What kind of conscription are you doing here...? I clearly remember that you are a military doctor."

The woman sitting on the table changed her legs and tilted her legs. The one-step skirt of the military uniform perfectly outlined the curve of her waist.

When she looked up at Howard, there was a hazy clarity in her green eyes.

God!I love those green eyes.Howard thought.

But if you have red hair, it should be more suitable, or simply don't wear this military shirt, isn't the skirt more suitable for this wonderful night--

"I only have green eyes and no red hair, Howard." She interrupted his thoughts with a look like I see through you. "And wearing a skirt, although it is a military uniform skirt."

"I came to New York because I wanted to be with Dr. Erskine, and he meant to wait at the conscription office."

She jumped off the table and pushed Howard toward the booth.

"But are you sure your repulsor is ready? Never before—"

"Edison first lit a light bulb at an exhibition rather than in a laboratory."

Howard raised one eyebrow confidently, then glanced at the time.

"Good luck finding the man Dr. Erskine told you to find, doctor."

She seemed to be stunned, and the anti-gravity car fell in her mind, Howard's awkward smile and other scenes were fleeting.

"Good luck to you too..." She paused. "But you might not be Edison Stark."

"Edison can't be me Howard Stark."

When leaving, he turned around and blew her a kiss.

so childish...

She shrugged, turned around and picked up the files on the desktop.

The music-accompanied beauty's opening scene finally ushered in Mr. Stark's debut - which did not disappoint - with a French kiss with a red-lipped girl in a miniskirt.

"...After many years, flying cars in the air will become possible." Howard Stark winked at the screaming beauties in the audience.

The next second, as Perry had foreseen—the car crashed down.

The scene was very embarrassing at one point, but the audience still applauded respectfully.

Unlike many spectators crowded in the audience who were keen on hovering cars, Steve was a little depressed now.

Actually not a little bit, but very depressing.

Bucky...is now Sergeant Barnes, wearing a military uniform, hugging a beautiful woman, with a perfect height blocking his sight.

Of course, things like height don't make people feel so depressed, otherwise how sad I would have been for so many years.

Not sad, but very depressed, Steve left the busy booth alone, and walked to the conscription advertisement not far away...

On the recruitment advertisement, there is a promotional picture of American soldiers saluting. A hole is cut in the head, and there is a mirror behind it. As long as you walk over, you can see your face appearing on it.like this...

Possibly tiptoeing... Steve thought as he stood in front of the recruiting ad.

Suddenly pushed and staggered by someone behind him, Steve looked back, and Bucky patted him on the shoulder with a smile.

"You missed two beauties, it's time to dance, let's go?"

Steve looked at the flickering billboards and bustling exhibitions.

"You go first, I'll come later."

Barnes glanced at the poster, then at Steve with his head down. "You still want to join the army...?" He raised an eyebrow. "Using the identity of that Ohio state will reveal... It will be worse if they take you..."

"You think I can't be a soldier."

"This is a matter of dying on the battlefield—"

"Sorry gentlemen, but... who wants to join the army?"

Suddenly someone stood up around the corner, silently, as if she had been there all along.

She tugged at the military uniform on her body, picked up a set of conscription forms on the table and handed them over to Steve.

"The one next to him is already..." She glanced at Barnes' clothes. "It's a sergeant, so, sir, join the army?"

"Varied……"

Steve was a little dazed. He had signed up countless times, but he had never seen one... who invited him to join the army.

Barnes took a look at the woman. She was not short, but she was in good shape. If she is German, then the green eyes are very similar.

The form she handed over was not answered, she withdrew her hand in embarrassment, and looked at the sergeant who was obviously looking at her.

"I'm Perry Carter, the registrar at the Enlistment Office here."

Barnes looked at Steve, whose eyes were still on the stack of forms, and patted him on the shoulder to signal him to regain his senses. After all, it wouldn't be nice for him to meet a registrar who was enthusiastic about enlistment.

"James Barnes," he added. "As you said, Sergeant. Besides, no one here wants to join the army."

He smiled politely, put his arm on Steve's shoulder, and turned to leave.

And Steve freed his hand and picked up a registration form on the table.

"Thank you, I was distracted just now."

Perry raised his eyebrows and glanced at Barnes, before returning to the little man in front of him. "I see a bright future for you, Rogers. First welcome you on behalf of a certain American army."

Sergeant Barnes fought hard, resisting the urge to roll his eyes.

As Steve stood at his desk and started filling out another round of forms, Barnes turned his attention to Perry Carter, who was standing nearby. He walked over a few steps, and began to try to get something from the registrar, asking her to find a time to quickly tear up the useless list like Steve.

Because Sergeant Barnes had always believed in his own charm.

"Miss Carter?" He smiled softly, posing coolly with one hand in his belt.

"Is there something wrong?" Perry glanced at Barnes, and then turned his attention to the registration form being filled out.

"Of course." His smile widened. "Mr. Stark's exhibition is rare, not to mention that on such a perfect night, it is cruel to leave a beautiful lady alone at the registration desk."

"If you're talking about Howard's sweet, awkward smile after the car fell off, it does seem to be very attractive to girls."

"..." Barnes choked for a moment, but the little Brooklyn prince, who had experienced many battles, would not be discouraged.

"Mr. Stark is not the only sight at the show..."

"That's right, your two female companions who came in a hurry are also extremely beautiful scenery."

Barnes looked back, and they did walk over with smiles on their high heels.

"Hey Sergeant, shall we go dancing?"

Sergeant Barnes chose to politely refuse.

How many years is the sentence for joining the army with a false identity?Sergeant Barnes expressed curiosity.

But that doesn't mean he wants to use Steve as an example.

"Sorry for the wait..." He shrugged at the two female companions, not surprised to see their disappointed expressions.

But obviously, dancing and preventing Steve from joining the army, he would definitely choose the latter.

"Come on Miss Carter, Steve has been rejected many times, do you think he will pass?"

"If they accept even a freak like me, it doesn't seem difficult to accept one more patriot?" Perry gave full play to his skills of pretending to be crazy, and took the form handed over by Steve with great satisfaction.

"Steve Rogers..." She raised the corners of her mouth. "Margaret also said that I would gain absolutely nothing from following Howard. Now you can prove that she is wrong."

"If you only recruited one Steve, then I have to say that Margaret is absolutely right." Barnes added in a flattering way.

"Don't keep your partner waiting, Sergeant Barnes." Perry closed his watch and sat back in the corner.

The billboard lights flickered, illuminating Perry's eyes in the shadows in the corner.Barnes stared at the form in her hand for a moment, then turned and pushed Steve to the two female companions, and walked up to Perry himself.

It's a sad story where taking the form is more important than dancing with the beautiful women.thought Barnes.

So he held out his hand to the registrar who seemed okay.

"May I have the honor of asking you to dance, Miss Carter?"

Steve was pushed by Bucky to those two female companions, and it was no surprise that he was rejected.

But when he came to the medical again, thank God.

Meeting Dr. Erskine, that's more important than dancing.

"No." Perry answered neatly.

It's over, am I not handsome enough?

Barnes' outstretched hand froze in midair.

"If you are for this form in my hand." She shook the paper, then put it down, and started to spin the pen in her hand. The pen turned into a wobbly cloud of silver at the fingertips. "I think you'd better talk to Steve Rogers directly instead of me. I can understand your consideration for your friend, but at least you should respect the wishes of the person involved."

"Ma'am, you don't know people as well as you think you do."

Barnes chuckled. "You're killing Steve."

"If he died it was because of the Nazis, Sergeant Barnes. You, too, had nothing to do with the registrar you met in the first place. So focus all on the enemy. Good luck."

Barnes looked again at the Carter Registrar, her green eyes full of "patriotic ambition."

It turned out later that it was an illusion.

But Bucky Barnes at the time replied like this——

"You're right, Miss Carter. You're... just like Steve."

"That's good, I think he looks very patriotic." Perry nodded.

"Patriotic?" Barnes frowned. "Listen to your accent, if I'm not mistaken, you should love Queen Victoria?"

The pen that had been spinning at his fingertips stopped suddenly, and Perry put the pen back in his pocket and looked up at him.

"England is not only Victoria's Stuart and Hanover, but also Lancaster and York when counting up." There was a smile in her tone, but Barnes felt that her next sentence was not true at all. It will be a joke.

"If you ask me, I love—the eternal Lancaster."

"Lancaster... bomber?"

"...Ah, I heard that's pretty good." Perry laughed. "Would love to have a chance to see a picture of you flying a Lancaster in the papers."

"Ha." Barnes laughed, and the thick eyelashes that curled up with the arc of his eyes when he smiled made Perry very jealous as a woman. In fact, he still knows a little about Lancaster.Seems like a British surname... Lancaster and York or something?

But there was still more he knew about the Lancaster bomber.

"Maybe we'll meet again at the front."

"Front? I thought you were just a... registrar. Miss Carter."

"A registrar in uniform?" Perry smiled. "Actually you should call me Dr. Carter."

"Then we'd better not meet at the front, Dr. Carter."

"No, that's not what it means. In fact, the army still has daily medical examinations."

"Then why didn't I see you at the medical examination?"

"No, you don't want to see me at the medical," Perry murmured. "Actually, I came here just to make up the numbers. When the army I am in is dispatched, I should go back and do what I really need to do."

So you handed Steve the draft form to make up the numbers?

... Barns paused.

"Good luck to you, too, Dr. Carter."

"Thanks. I hope it's just a medical examination if I see you at the front line."

"Uh..." Barnes nodded. "Yes, just a physical examination."
