Chapter 23 The captain and her; I want to be by your side forever

Steve overheard the conversation. He felt...he should really go out and interrupt them. And here is the open space, a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. employees walking around.Despite everyone pretending to have bad ears, Steve is pretty sure that passing employees are surreptitiously looking at him with a weird mix of sympathy.

"Cough." Steve coughed and walked out from the corner.

Wesley let go of Holly.Instead it was Holly, who reacted calmly and smiled when she saw Steve.

"Wesley." Steve greeted them with a nod.

Wesley followed Steve to the balcony at the end of the corridor.

"What do you want to talk about?"

"Wesley, I hope we can get along peacefully. Holly doesn't like our tit-for-tat."

Wesley glanced at Steve.

"It's so easy to say." Wesley said coldly, walked to the railing, and lit a cigarette, "You are the winner, and you are Captain America. You don't have to do anything to take her heart away. And I will always be her brother."

"If one day, I have to leave her, you will be the one who will always be there for her," Steve said, looking at Wesley sincerely. "There are no winners. This is not a contest."

Wesley was silent for a moment, shaking off the soot.

"You know what? I don't want to admit that you were my childhood idol," Wesley said, looking away. "Still."

Wesley stood by the balcony, leaning against the railing.Steve looked away from Wesley to the outside of the building, to the cityscape of Washington, D.C.

"The sky is so blue here," Wesley murmured.

"I prefer the Brooklyn sky," Steve said.

The two were silent for a moment.

"When are you going to tell her?" Wesley asked, squinting at Steve.

"What about you?" Steve countered. "Are you going to tell her?"

"This is your marriage, Captain. She's your wife now. Are you going to let her continue to misunderstand? Didn't know you were Captain America? Let me remind you, Holly is far smarter and more considerate than you think. She can go head-to-head with her enemies and save face for her lover."

Steve frowned, turning to look at Wesley.

"You mean, she might have already guessed the things I kept from her?"

"What do you think?" Wesley shrugged, "I told her that I worked in a securities company. Two years later, I finally confessed that I was a killer, and she was not surprised at all. It is a family heritage, and she has great intuition. "

"I can't let her know more." Steve shook his head, "I will protect her from all dangers."

Wesley rolled his eyes, disapproving.

"You're the captain, you're in charge. I hope your boss didn't assign this to you as an assignment. That's a bit of a joke."

Steve was noncommittal.

"So...we're on the same page?" Steve asked.

Wesley raised an eyebrow angrily. "No, don't even think about it. It's still far away. I can tear you apart from Holly at any time, even if you are Captain America. I don't care if you feel sorry for her. You must divorce. Holly doesn't need a green card, she just needs me .”

Steve laughed. "I see. I'll take care of her."

"That's not what I meant! I said I'm going to tear you apart! Do you understand?! Steven Rogers!"

Conversation is over.

Steve returns to the rest waiting area.Holly was staring at the newspaper cabinet in a daze. She didn't notice his approach, startled when Steve called her softly.

"Steve." Holly gasped.

"It's okay." Steve put his hand on Holly's shoulder. "We're done talking."

Holly stared at Steve, many emotions flashed in his eyes that Steve didn't have time to distinguish carefully.

"You didn't fight, did you?" Holly asked.Pursing her lips, she forced a smile.

Steve raised an eyebrow. "Of course not. Let's go. Let's go home."

Holly was stunned.

"Holly?" Steve frowned. "Are you okay?"

"Sorry, I..." Holly shook her head, stood up, and put her arms around Steve naturally, "I'm just glad we're home."

Steve could hear the emotion behind Holly's words. She was tired, in shock, and insecure. She wanted to go back to where he was.

And this also made Steve feel at ease.

From that day on, Holly didn't feel comfortable leaving the house.

Whether Steve is present or not, their home is protected by 24-hour S.H.I.E.L.D. surveillance.S.H.I.E.L.D. believes that Holly holds some secrets that the Syndicate wants to obtain, so they protect her and monitor her.Even if she lives with Steve.

This made Steve particularly dissatisfied, although Fury's reason was to keep Holly safe.Steve believes that this is a distrust of them.Distrust of his ability, of Holly's position.

To make matters worse, Fury sent Sharon to move across the street from them.

"Oh." Holly closed the door and turned to Steve. "It's amazing. Your co-workers have become our neighbors."

Steve sits on the couch, brow raised, shoulders shrugged, a book in his lap. "Who knows. No one told me about it."

Holly tilted her head and stood by the door, arms folded, looking at Steve.

"Maybe she wants to ask you out for coffee? I heard you owe her two cups."

"Holly, I told you I wouldn't drink coffee with Sharon. Not even a glass of water."

Holly smiled. "So what the hell are you guys? Some kind of... agent of a secret state organization? I'm not familiar with the name S.H.I.E.L.D. It's the FBI and CIA. What the hell is S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

Steve looked away to see the dust on the ceiling next to the chandelier. "Well, you'll know when something big happens someday."

"For example, aliens invaded the earth? Mutants assassinated the president?"

"Uh... something like that?"

Holly didn't press Steve's career any further. This was the last time they discussed Steve's work. She seems to have decided to just think of Steve as an illustrator and not think about the rest of it.

For safety's sake, Holly did not return to work in the mall. She starts to draw.

Holly's painting habit prevented Steve from noticing that her emotions were not right at first.A week had passed by the time he noticed that Holly's canvases had messy lines and dull colors.

"Holly."

"What's wrong?"

"This painting... where are you going to put it?"

Steve asked, standing behind Holly. He had just come home, had a shower, and his hair was damp.Holly, dressed in house clothes, sits at her easel coloring.Their easels were placed by the window in the living room, facing the windowsill.Every morning, the sun shines on the easel through the glass, and when it rains, the water drops hit the window, which will condense a layer of moisture on the glass surface due to temperature difference.

Holly turned her head to one side, raised her face, and slowly curled the corners of her mouth at Steve.

"There is no place to put it." She said, her tone was very calm, "This is for sale."

Steve glanced at the canvas, "For sale. To... who?"

"I don't know. Tony said he wanted to open an art gallery and asked me to provide ten works." Holly replied, lowering her head, a little casually.

Steve was pretty sure something wasn't right with Holly. This is not her normal way of talking to people, and the color of that painting is not her preferred color system.

Holly kept staring at the floor.Probably in a daze.

Steve frowned. When he found a pile of DVDs of war movies on the coffee table, his brows frowned even tighter.

"Holly." He knelt down beside Holly and looked up at her. "Look at me."

Holly pursed her lips, and slowly moved her eyes to Steve.

"Hey." Steve curled his lips.

"...Hey." Holly forced a smile.

Steve reached out and stroked Holly's cheek. "Holly, I'm here."

Holly opened her eyes wide, stared blankly for a moment, and suddenly fell into Steve's arms.

"Steve." Holly kept calling, her hands tightly wrapped around Steve's neck, shoulders, and arms, "I..."

"What's wrong?"

But Holly stopped, buried her face in Steve's shoulder, hugged him tightly, and remained silent.

Steve had a hard time guessing what happened to Holly. He is also not very good at guessing women's thoughts, especially Holly's.Whenever he faced Holly, he was always a little flustered, maybe because of his lack of experience in getting along with women. To quote Tony and Bucky, he didn't know how to flirt with girls, and he was always flirted with.Or maybe because Holly has a quality that he yearns for, he can't tell what it is, as long as Holly smiles at him, he feels that the world seems to be a little better.

"How are you, Holly?" Steve asked, stroking Holly's long hair with his palm. Her hair is black, and so are her pupils, which look purple in daylight.Steve really likes the color, it's beautiful.

"Steve..." Holly murmured, her breath gently patting the side of Steve's neck.

Steve resists the urge to kiss Holly.

Holly looked up, gazing into Steve's eyes. "I don't want to leave you. I want to be by your side forever."

Steve froze for a moment.

"Yes. Of course you can," he replied, frowning in confusion. "I'll be there for you no matter what. I made a promise. But why are you bringing this up all of a sudden?"

"It's nothing." Holly turned her face away, avoiding Steve's gaze, "I just... feel that the world seems less scary with you here. You are the most upright, kind, and brave person I've ever met. Like a superhero in a movie. You have the power to change the world. I don’t understand why you choose to help me like this.”

"Because you need it," Steve replied, without thinking, "We're friends."

The author has something to say:

YOOOOOOO

Someone said the wrong thing LOL

Well, I want to leave a message and hug.I've been staying up all night to catch up on the draft, and at the risk of exploding, I rushed to a wave of midnight shows to see the bloody battle at Iron Ridge... so fucking good.Too beautiful.I cry out.

For people of faith, this movie really means a lot.Garfield's next film is also about religion.I found him quite suitable for this kind of role...
