[CM] THE CASE

Chapter 48

Religion makes people believe in God, not taking God as its object, but as its end. — Aquinas

Morgan's cell phone rang. It was Garcia.

He was at the scene, had just finished simulating the killer's murder process, and thought she was the one who found the criminal records related to Raphael. But Garcia's first words stunned him: "Are you at the crime scene?"

Morgan hadn't heard such a serious voice from her for a long time, so she couldn't react for a while: "Uh...yes."

"Is there a burgundy settee?"

Morgan doesn't know what a burgundy is, but the bench is right behind him: "Um...if you mean a small sofa, yes."

Garcia murmured, "Oh God..."

Morgan was confused: "What's wrong? What's the problem?"

"My friend sent me a viral video."

"Virus what?"

"Video. If someone finds it interesting, send it to everyone in your friend list, and pass it on like this. Judging from the long list of names in the forwarding column, this video is very popular."

Morgan still didn't understand: "So?"

"I'm sure it's a crime scene video," Garcia said. "Specifically, this is a video of a murder, and more specifically - this is a video of Kyle and his wife being killed."

"You mean, someone posted the video of Kyle and his wife's victimization online?"

Gideon jerked his head up.

"Yes, the viewing angle is still very good, and the whole room can be seen at a glance."

Reid looked around and saw a laptop. He hesitated for a moment, Morgan was already close to the small camera.

It is open.

"How Do Killers Choose Their Victims?"

Morgan carefully unplugged the computer's charging cable.

"From the outside, the Kyle couple's residence is very low-key, how does he know 'they have too much'?"

"Huh... I don't know." Griffith pushed away the scratch paper used for the calculation, interrupting Hotch's obsessive soliloquy.

Emily just hung up the phone: "Morgan said that there is a video circulating on the Internet of Kyle and his wife being killed, captured by their own laptop camera."

"Their own? The murderer still has time to operate a computer?" Griffith asked in surprise.

"Probably not," Hotch said. "Call them back and have Garcia send the video over and we'll analyze it together."

"The truth is," Emily turned on the computer, "Garcia has already passed it on."

The video begins with the killer's confession. He almost blended into the darkness of the background, and only the pale half of his face under the hood could be seen clearly.

He lowered his head and always tilted his head between each sentence, as if he was listening to something.

"He said that the world is full of greed, lust, disease..."

"This is the first suspect." Emily pointed the tip of a pen at his stubbled chin, "Who is he listening to?"

Gideon quipped, "God."

"Not God, someone sitting next to him reminding him what to say," Morgan said.

At this time, the video screen switched to the bedroom of Kyle and his wife, and the narration changed to an unfamiliar voice: "As God said in "Leviticus" Chapter 26No.18..."

"Is it the third suspect?" JJ asked.

"It could have been cut from a video of the sermon as well."

They had a lively discussion, and Griffith listened to it from the next desk. But there wasn't room for all of them on one desk, so Reid and Griffith - who had been driven over by Gideon - dutifully studied the Kyle couple's computer.

"Nothing special, there are their bills and vacation photos on the hard drive." Reid returned to the desktop, and then pushed Griffith back on the seat, "Don't move, Griffith, be careful that Gideon scolds you."

"I'm fine." Griffith protested softly, "Take your other hand away, you have great strength."

"I'm sorry." Reid withdrew his hand embarrassingly.

When they finished their errands and returned their attention to the computer, Reid suddenly realized something. This made him carefully press Griffith's wrist resting on the table, and asked the person in charge in a low voice: "Does this building have wireless network?"

The person in charge was puzzled: "Yes."

"The camera on this computer is on," Reid said. "The computer can automatically connect to the network and send the image to a certain location."

Griffith horrified: "You mean, he's watching us?"

Hotch came over: "Can Garcia track it down?"

"Theoretically yes, as long as the computer is always on..."

"Hey! The screen is black." Griffith patted Reid.

I saw huge red letters occupying the screen: "Satan's army will not win."

The computer then shuts down irretrievably and won't turn on no matter what Griffith tries.

"Looks like it's been hacked," Emily said.

"Maybe it's time for them to apply for remote technical support." Garcia, who was far away in Quantico, made himself a cup of instant coffee while answering the phone.

Gideon frowned. "Remote what?"

"Technical support." Garcia patiently explained to the technology idiot Gideon, "It is to log in to your computer remotely to solve the problem for you directly, instead of guiding you step by step through the phone."

Griffith asked: "Then they left a backdoor or a Trojan horse after the service ended?"

"Probably."

"A Trojan horse is a program that stays in the computer and starts later." Reid explained to the dazed Gideon, "For example, an advertisement that pops up when you open a web page."

"Garcia, check to see if the Kyle couple have called for tech support in the last six months," Hotch ordered.

"Okay. By the way, if you give me the Kyle couple's laptop, I can check the hard drive and see if there is any virus hidden in it."

"no problem."

"By the way, that video has gone viral."

Gideon didn't understand: "What do you mean?"

"That said, it's become the most popular video on the site. Judging by the comments, everyone thinks it's pretty...cool."

"Call again if you have any questions." Hotch finished and hung up the phone.

Gideon sighed, looking even more tired: "Murder is entertainment."

"They probably didn't know it was real," Griffith said. "They probably thought it was just a horror movie promotion."

After all, this is the Internet, true and false are unverifiable.People are bombarded with huge amounts of information every day, how can they bother to distinguish the true from the false?

"The suspect was right about one thing," Morgan said coldly. "The world is a fucking mess."

The humble log cabin has a humble room full of monitors. These monitors are old and new, black and white and color, but each one is showing a person's life.

A woman lying on the bed teasing a cat, a college student working hard on a thesis, a man watching porn, a child playing games... And, a woman in a red dress.

She looks sexy and beautiful, and she opens the door to the man.Men in crumpled plaid shirts are a world apart from sexy women.

The young man's two caterpillar-like eyebrows were huddled together sadly, with an indescribable bitterness.

"She just made a mistake," he pleaded. "God's will is forgiveness and love."

His lonely shadow was trampled under his feet, like a submissive monster.

"What God do you know?" the low voice cursed, "Do as I say!"

The young man let out a thin whimper.

But he stood up obediently and put on his black coat.

I don't know what the person who designed this wooden house thought. The sunlight hardly shines in, and the room is gloomy all the year round, filled with a decaying smell.

The black coat seemed to weigh a thousand pounds, making the young man unable to straighten his back.

He is like an evil wizard living in a haunted house, holding a scepter made of bones, ready to ransack this evil world.

Or, punish this sinful world.

At three o'clock in the afternoon, BAU received their third victim.

JJ and Reid were sent to interview witnesses, and everyone else went to the scene.

"The coroner hasn't come yet," said the detective. "This time the circumstances are different."

Morgan, Emily, and Griffith went upstairs to look at the body, and downstairs the detective was looking at Raphael's 911 call log.

"Look, I'm going to put her in bed..."

Gideon sighed, "Jezebel."

"In other words, the dead man doesn't live here, and the mistress is missing." Griffith said as he examined the body.

"Yes, it was an unlucky affair," Morgan continued. "Don't look back, we're being filmed."

Emily felt a chill down her spine.

"Well, this time the technique is exactly the same as last time." Griffith carefully inspected the wound on the dead man's throat, "The angle is also...strange."

"how?"

"Raphael also made the call this time? Then he comes in alone and does the whole thing, what do the other two need?"

Morgan's eyes widened: "You mean..."

"Is it possible that from the beginning to the end of this case, it was not 'them' but 'he' who did it?"
