Soviet Union 1991
Main text Chapter 796 Scorched earth and massacre
Second update
The attack on the Soviet Embassy in Beirut has affected the hearts of all parties, especially the frightened Lebanese government. It was originally on the high-voltage line of the situation in the Middle East. As the situation has improved in recent years, it has become increasingly involved with Israel, Syria and various internal conflicts. Armed groups are in a dangerous dynamic equilibrium. However, this bombing completely shattered the political balance that all parties tried to maintain, because everyone knew that even in distant Eastern Europe, the Soviet red forces could still cast dark clouds over their skies.
Lebanese President Elias Hrawi now wants to die. He would rather the restless Hezbollah forces cause trouble with Israel or Syria than provoke the terrible monster of the Soviet Union. The Chechen rebels, the Estonian Popular Front, the Georgian army, and the Libyan Revolutionary Party all rushed to demonstrate for themselves what it means to provoke the Soviets. There are even rumors that Yanayev implemented Stalin's policies in Chechnya and drove all the Wahhabis who were unwilling to cooperate with the Soviet authorities into the ice and snow of Siberia to support the construction of the Soviet Union. As for the few survivors who could come back alive and not turn into ice sculptures in the snowy wasteland, he didn't dare to think about it.
Now such a situation is happening in Lebanon. The bloody case twelve years ago is still vivid in our minds. The senior leader of the Lebanese Mohammedan Party who kidnapped the Soviet ambassador was eventually cut into pieces and sent back piece by piece. The whole country was shocked. Apart from the Colombian drug lords, only the KGB dared to conduct such anti-humanitarian negotiations in an aboveboard manner. From then on, terrorist organizations in Lebanon avoided the more terrifying Red Soviets for fear that they would also be dismembered.
The KGB finally relied on its thunderous methods to achieve stability in Lebanon. However, the ten-year-old peace that had been maintained through the blood and tears of its predecessors was broken today by a group of ungrateful guys. Hrawi had just signed the Lebanese-Syrian Treaty of Cooperation and Coordination on Brotherly Relations and the Treaty on Security and Defense with Syrian President Assad, stipulating maximum cooperation and coordination between the two countries in all fields. I didn't expect it to happen so soon. There has been an accident. He even felt that it was a trap for the National Assembly to amend the constitution and agree to extend his term for three years.
But anyway, it happened. If he doesn't stand up and do something, Yanayev will probably come to accuse him. Rather than the other party coming to you first, it is better to take the initiative yourself.
While Hrawi sent his foreign minister to the Soviet Embassy in Lebanon to offer condolences, he also tried to contact the Kremlin to clarify the matter.
"The Lebanese government has nothing to do with this incident. We will do our best to investigate who is behind the scenes. We also ask General Secretary Mayayev to be calm. We are investigating and will definitely give you a proper explanation. "
Hrawi used almost all the euphemisms he could use, but this did not calm Yanayev's anger. They have not taken action in the Middle East for so long that they have forgotten how terrible the Red Soviets that have enveloped Europe for more than 40 years are.
Moscow's attitude was surprisingly bad.
"Investigation? What's the use of investigation?" Yanayev said without reason, blocking Hrawi. "Why did you go there before? This is not the first time such an incident has happened in Beirut. Is this how your country’s security agencies treat foreign embassies? Or is the Lebanese government actually responsible for this terrorist attack?”
Hrawi did not want to have anything to do with those radical organizations. In fact, except for the impatient guys, basically no one dared to provoke the Soviet Union. He quickly explained, "No, no, no, please listen to my explanation..."
Yanayev interrupted him, "I don't want to hear your explanation, nor do I want to know what conspiracy is behind it. What the Soviet Union has to do now is for the government to allow our investigation team to enter Beirut for on-site inspection. We need our own people To conduct a secret investigation, instead of the already infiltrated investigation department within your government, if one escapes, we will go directly to the Beirut government.”
Kryuchkov and Primakov looked at each other and suppressed their smiles. Yanayev is putting pressure on Lebanon and forcing the other party to compromise.
Hrawi disagreed with the KGB's chaos in Lebanon, and he strongly vetoed Yanayev's suggestion, "But this is a terrorist attack on Lebanese soil, and it should be resolved internally by Lebanon. If General Secretary Yanayev insists on Send an investigation team, then we choose to refuse.”
There was no reply from the other end of the phone, but Hrawi felt deathly silent and suffocated. It took a long time for Hrawi to hear Yanayev's reply. In his opinion, the next words were tantamount to the Soviet Union's declaration of war on Lebanon.
"If something bad happens to the kidnapped diplomats in the next few days, you should know what we will do, right? President Hrawi."
"We will attack all anti-Soviet organizations in Lebanon. This time it will not be a small fight with precise targeting and elimination, but a scorched-earth tactic of all-out war. I will destroy every village and every city where those terrorists are entrenched , every cave has become a deserted and scorched earth! Those who dare to infringe on Soviet interests will be severely punished."
"Don't worry about the number of bombers. I can assure you that we have enough bombers to turn most of Lebanon into a burning hell."
President Heravi's back was soaked with cold sweat. He asked with a twitch in his mouth, "General Secretary Yanaev, you have to think clearly. This is preparing for another Middle East war. What you are doing is equivalent to declaring war on the Islamic world."
Yanaev sneered and said sarcastically, "No, this is not the Middle East war. In fact, the six Middle East wars were just local conflicts of no standard. A group of Muslin country bumpkins fought a primitive conflict with the most advanced weapons, and they thought it was a modern war? You have never seen the nightmare of every inch of land being bombed. Do you need us to teach you what war is?"
"What the Soviet Union is preparing is a Middle East massacre."
"So now, President Heravi still insists on opposing our investigation team to enter Beirut?" (To be continued.)
