#392 - The new future of satellites
This communication satellite was undoubtedly lucky, actually operating until it ran out of fuel.
Everyone did an external visual inspection of it and found the anomalies that had caused the space agency to record abnormalities, without exception, all were due to collisions.
Some were pierced, some had small cuts, and some only had small dents.
Fortunately, the impact points were very small, so it is conceivable that the impacting objects should also be small, but then again, if the impacting objects were large enough, they would not have seen this satellite at all; basically, even the wreckage would be hard to find.
So far, the impact of space debris is not small; many space facilities have been scrapped by space debris collisions.
When space debris collides with space debris, although it will cause long-term effects, at least there will be no immediate losses.
If an operating space device is hit, it can break the hearts of the space department.
Not only will it be heartbreaking, but it will also affect national development; some small countries have only launched one satellite in total, and if it is suddenly hit, they will return to square one.
Don't think that doesn't happen; it really does.
It was still more than a decade ago when a country in South America called Guado finally sent a self-developed microsatellite named "Pegasus", about 10 centimeters long and wide and weighing 1.2 kilograms, into space to play the Guado national anthem and send back space images to the ground.
It was the pride of Guado and a symbol of Guado's touch of space.
This microsatellite was launched in Tianxia, but less than a month after entering orbit, it lost contact due to a collision with space debris.
After a while, the Guado Space Agency announced that after being hit by space debris, "Pegasus" did not leave its original orbit, but the solar panels were damaged, the antenna was "unable to orient", and the satellite was "spinning wildly around two axes".
"The satellite is dizzy after the impact, but it's still there," said the director of Guado's space agency.
Although they were still praying, everyone knew that their space pride was gone, and the symbol of touching space was gone; after that, they could only say that they had once... touched space.
A country's space symbol was gone just like that, but it was too small after all, and the country it belonged to was also small, so it received limited attention.
For a long time, the International Space Station was the largest artificial object in space; its large size meant a higher probability of being hit.
Large pieces of space debris are monitored and can be warned in advance, allowing the International Space Station to maneuver and dodge, but some tiny pieces of space debris are difficult to monitor and dodge.
It's hard to say about the outer shells of other modules; you can't see them unless they are directly pierced, but the International Space Station's observation tower can be seen clearly.
The observation tower is a protruding observation module made up of several portholes; from a distance, it looks like nothing, but up close, you will find that it has dense scratches and some tiny impact pits.
A well-known example is a photo taken by an astronaut stationed there, which shows an impact pit about 7 millimeters in diameter on the porthole.
This is very dangerous for the space station, because no one had noticed this small impact pit before, until someone went to the "viewing window" to observe and accidentally discovered this small impact pit.
They didn't realize that the space station had been hit; although it wasn't pierced this time, it was still a very dangerous phenomenon.
If it is not handled, the space station may one day be hit by something and have a hole punched through it, and then none of the astronauts on the space station will be able to escape.
But as astronauts, they can't do anything about it, because this is not something that they can solve, so all they can do is sign some agreements that are not made public before entering space.
Now, the situation seems to be finally getting better.
Navigator is starting to take this seriously.
And the astronauts watching the live broadcast on the International Space Station can think of the scratches on the International Space Station from the scratches on that satellite.
"I hope that Navigator and Tianxia Aerospace Administration's experiment can be successful."
"Yes, if they succeed, it will also be a guarantee for our safety, so we don't have to pray every time we enter space."
"Speaking of which, our International Space Station is indeed seriously aging. When can we move into a new space station?"
"I don't know. Currently, there are only a few small commercial space station projects internationally, and then there is Tianxia's Heavenly Court project. God, it's simply a space behemoth."
"I wonder if we will have the opportunity to go inside, and I don't know if they plan to cooperate with the other side..."
Just as the astronauts on the International Space Station were looking forward to it, Tang Chao had already started dismantling the satellite.
They are going to dismantle the damaged modules and the outdated equipment.
After more than ten years, some equipment has been upgraded very quickly, such as solar panels, which have been updated several times. This upgrade will definitely replace them with new solar panels.
It can provide more power and higher voltage with a smaller wingspan.
Not only because it is advanced, but the old solar panels were also damaged in the previous impact. It was also hit with a hole, which led to a decrease in the conversion power of the solar panels, plus other miscellaneous reasons, the decrease was not small.
So, it must be replaced with a new one.
Even if it's because of obsessive-compulsive disorder, not wanting to see broken solar panels, they have to be replaced with new ones.
When they actually got started, they felt that this kind of thing seemed really... simple, and seven days seemed to be no problem.
Even the upgrade plan they finalized on the ground was not 100% suitable.
Because the situation in space is indeed different.
Why are they so careful when building satellites on the ground, and some structures are repeatedly discussed? Because this satellite is not built to be used immediately, it has to go through a period of "violent transportation" in the middle, and many of its internal structures are used to cope with this.
But upgrading satellites in space basically eliminates the problem of "violent transportation".
Because it is already in a microgravity environment, there is no need to super accelerate to get rid of gravity, and there is no thick atmosphere here, there will be no violent friction, and the impact of various vibrations, shaking, and acceleration will of course be much smaller.
So they can be bolder in upgrading and modifying the satellite!
This situation led them to dismantle everything that could be dismantled, leaving only the intact satellite frame, and they stopped temporarily.
They have to contact the ground; they may be able to create an ultimate modified version of the new satellite in space.
If this can be changed, it will not be just one satellite, but many satellites.
Satellites of the same model have already entered the atmosphere and burned up, and some are about to be "scrapped", and some were not even successfully launched.
If this can be a good start, it will be much easier to repair and upgrade those satellites in the future.
Especially those that were not successfully launched for various reasons; they entered orbit but never operated for even a day, which is a huge loss.
Now, they have hope of re-entering the ranks.
They thought of it, and many people thought of it too.
"Good家伙,because of the rocket or satellite itself 的问题,地球轨道上确实有一些卫星没有起到作用,如果能修好,那简直太节省资源了。"
"对,卫星的制造材料可都是很珍贵的,如果真能把它们修一下重新投入使用,即对得起科学家们 的辛苦工作,又对得起卫星的本来使命!"
