The Admiral of Hogwarts
#413 - Pure-blood Family (Part 2)
Just as Sirius Black was sighing, Hugo noticed several familiar names at the bottom of the tapestry, such as Tonks, who was currently building a lunar base on the moon, and the notorious Death Eater, Bellatrix.
Of course, there was also the invisible hero, Regulus. "Oh, that's my brother," Sirius said, bending down to examine the name after seeing Hugo staring at that spot on the tapestry.
Although he pretended to be nonchalant, Hugo could sense that he still had feelings for his brother, even though they held severely conflicting beliefs.
"Stupid idiot, he joined the ranks of the Death Eaters," Sirius said, reaching out to touch the name. "My parents weren't Death Eaters, but they were fanatical supporters of pure-blood ideology.
Under their influence, my foolish brother became a Death Eater. I suppose my parents must have thought of him as a brave little hero."
"That was 15 years ago—" Hermione asked, looking at the date of death under the name.
"He was killed by Voldemort." Sirius's face was filled with disgust as he said this, but Hugo could clearly detect a hint of nostalgia in his tone.
"From what I learned after his death, he was already in too deep, and then he became terrified of what he was being asked to do and wanted to quit. Alas, you can't just hand Voldemort a resignation letter. It's either lifelong servitude or death."
After saying this, Sirius stood up and pointed to several names on the tapestry, saying, "I haven't looked at this thing in years. This is Phineas Nigellus, my great-great-grandfather, the most unpopular headmaster in Hogwarts history."
"Araminta Meliflua, my mother's cousin, tried to force through a Ministry of Magic decree to legalize the hunting of Muggles."
"And then there's my dear Aunt Elladora, who started the family tradition of beheading house-elves when they got too old to carry the plates. In short, these are the role models of the noble House of Black. Someone like me, an anomaly, is better off staying far away."
When talking about the others, the bit of nostalgia Sirius had shown earlier completely disappeared. After all, compared to his brother, all that remained of the others in his memory was a pile of stale pure-blood family rules.
"What's in those cabinets over there?" Seeing Sirius visibly agitated, Hugo immediately changed the subject and pointed to the dust-covered cabinets in the room, asking.
"Oh, those are some antiques and things collected by our family, many of which have various enchantments on them, and some even have magic that's very rare these days," Sirius said, looking in the direction Hugo was pointing.
"That's right, aren't you an alchemist? You can take a look and see if there's anything you like. You can take it all if you want. I was planning on throwing it all away anyway."
As he spoke, Sirius pulled open the tattered curtains, trying to brighten the room a little. As a result, several adult Doxies suddenly flew out from the folds of the curtains.
These little creatures buzzed their beetle-like, glittering wings, revealing needle-like little teeth, their petite bodies covered in dense black fur, and their four little fists clenched tightly in anger.
Seeing the Doxies rushing over, Hugo quickly took out his wand and drew a rune in front of him. Then, the golden rune that formed in the air quickly turned into an electric net, enveloping the Doxies.
With a few crackling sounds, the Doxies enveloped by the formed electric net all turned into clumps of black coke, crackling and falling onto the carpet.
"Well done, no wonder Professor Moody said you'd be suitable as an Auror," Sirius said, raising his eyebrows after seeing Hugo take action, and then praised, "To be honest, he rarely praises a young man like that."
After dealing with the little trouble caused by the Doxies, Hugo focused his attention on the glass cabinet in front of him. Because the cabinet was covered in dust before, the people present only saw what was inside after opening the cabinet door.
On the dusty cabinet shelves were all sorts of things, such as books bound in some kind of expensive leather with gold-stamped titles, a batch of rusty short swords, animal paws, a coiled snakeskin, and so on.
"It seems the House of Black does indeed have history," Hugo said, looking up after cleaning the dust off one of the books with his wand and opening it.
"For example, this book records how runic inscriptions should be made and how they can be applied in alchemy. Although the knowledge in it is not as good as the inheritance I have, it can be considered a top-notch inheritance if placed outside."
"I remember my father only put the books here to show off his knowledge. He probably didn't even flip through these books much. Compared to reading, I think he preferred to attend those pure-blood parties or something."
Hearing Hugo say this, Sirius Black leaned over to look at the book in Hugo's hand, and then, after thinking for a few seconds, revealed a look of disdain.
After hearing Sirius say this, Hugo immediately focused his attention on the book in his hand, and as expected, he found that the book looked very new overall, except for the yellowing of the paper due to being left for too long. It hadn't been touched much.
"What a pity," Hugo said, shaking his head as he looked at the book. As expected, the wizarding world was a world of extremes. Things that Muggle-borns and half-bloods could not find even with great effort were placed there as decorations in the homes of pure-bloods.
"Take it and read it if you like," Sirius said, looking at the books. "Anyway, this thing has never worked in my family. It's a good thing you're willing to read it."
Because the house had been abandoned for too long, it wasn't just books that were wasted. For example, the several bottles next to the books were filled with dried dragon blood, which had become worthless.
"Fortunately, this bottle can still be used after being cleaned," Hugo said, finding a way to recover the loss after looking at the bottles with heartache. "Compared to glass bottles, these natural crystal bottles are better for storing potions."
Hugo began to appraise the items in the cabinet one by one, while Hermione and several Weasleys helped to sort them into categories and put them together on the carpet.
Watching the two people busy there, Sirius said somewhat bored, "What's so good about these things? Wouldn't it be better to just throw them away?"
"Throw them away?" Hugo looked at Sirius in surprise, holding a music box in his hand that had almost made a sound but was interrupted.
"Many things here are valuable. For example, this music box in my hand can make people who hear the music doze off. So if you throw it out in battle, it can have some impact on the enemy."
"You know, we are now in a state of war with the Dark Lord. The core of the war is the competition of strength between the two sides, and resources are a very important part of it. Therefore, wasting things like throwing these away is not appropriate."
"You—you're right." After hearing Hugo's words, Sirius took the initiative to lower his head and apologize. He had never lacked money in his life, so his first reaction when he saw these things was to throw them away in order to get rid of the past he didn't want to look back on, without thinking about this aspect.
