The Comprehensive Evolution of American Comics
#605 - A firm heart
The Magik stood atop the high tree wall, the faint evening breeze stirring her waist-length hair, the golden strands shimmering even in the moonlight.
The massive Soulsword was plunged into the ground beside her, clearly indicating that even the tree wall, with its metal-like hardness, couldn't withstand the sharp Soulsword, but its owner was currently in no mood to pay attention to it.
Logically, the mutants arranged by Magneto were in groups of two or three to facilitate mutual support, but Illyana's situation was somewhat special.
This was not only because of her strength but also because of her teleportation ability, which made her the most agile of the mutants. If she wanted to escape, few could catch her.
Because of this characteristic, at her request, Magneto allowed her to guard a small area alone with the help of Stark Industries' drones.
Illyana's reasoning was that she was more flexible alone, but in reality, she just wanted some peace and quiet. What Yang Le had said to her last night, coupled with what she had seen and heard during the day, had messed with her head.
She was afraid of others noticing something was off, so she took the initiative to request solo action. Fortunately, everyone wasn't too familiar with her, and there were indeed many things to do, so few noticed anything amiss.
However, 'few' doesn't mean none. Besides Yang Le, who had been observing Magik from the start, a few others noticed her unease, such as the person currently flying towards her.
Watching Pixie, Megan, fluttering her wings in the air, Illyana gradually came back to her senses.
"What's wrong, Megan?" Illyana asked, picking up the Soulsword. "Did something happen on your side? Where are my brother and Ms. Grey?"
"They're fine, Illyana. Nothing has happened," Megan said, landing gently. "Harpy's tree wall is very reliable. No one can break through it in such a short time."
"Then why did you come to me?"
"Naturally, I noticed you have something on your mind, Illyana." Megan glanced at the ground beneath her feet and then sat down cross-legged. "Can we talk about it?"
"You noticed?" Illyana looked at the girl sitting in front of her in disbelief.
"Of course." Megan swayed. "It's not just me. Ms. Grey and your brother noticed too. As for the others, probably not?"
"Even you noticed? It seems like everyone might know."
Illyana smiled wryly, stuck the Soulsword behind her, and then sat down like Megan, leaning against the blade of her giant sword.
"It feels like you think I'm very unreliable," Megan frowned slightly. "Ms. Grey has her powers, telepathy makes her more sensitive to the emotional changes of those around her, Piotr is your brother, so he naturally cares about you, and me…"
Megan buried her head between her knees and said in a muffled voice, "I am your subject. Isn't it normal for a subject to notice the Queen's emotions?"
Illyana chuckled. She didn't expect Megan to remember what she had casually said. She had only wanted to comfort Megan, afraid that she would break down, and made herself a powerful figure she could rely on. 'Subject' and 'Queen' were just words that came out in a moment of urgency.
After all, she had only recently returned from Limbo, and there were still many habits she hadn't been able to change.
But seeing Megan's serious expression, Illyana was too embarrassed to correct her. She just treated it as playing a game with a child. When Megan grew up, the relationship brought about by this joke would naturally disappear.
"Thank you for coming to care about me, Megan. I'm much better now," Illyana said, ruffling the little girl's hair. "Now you can go back and report, my subject. The Queen has perked up again."
Megan shook her head and said, "I came here not just on my own accord. Ms. Grey and your brother both agreed that I should come. They thought you might need someone to confide in, so they asked me to come."
"But I'm fine now." Illyana still wanted to persuade Megan to go back, but gave up after seeing the other's stubborn eyes. Perhaps she really needed someone to confide in.
Illyana licked her lips, just about to speak, but felt something touching her Soulsword. She subconsciously wanted to turn around and draw her sword, but felt a slight change in the ground beneath her.
The originally hard tree wall had become a little softer, only a little, but enough for her to feel the difference. Connecting it to Yang Le's ability, Illyana immediately understood what Yang Le was reminding her.
He had been watching her? Reminding her? Reminding her of what? Why at this moment? Why not show himself directly?
Was it because of Megan? Probably not. Then there was someone he was wary of.
In a short second, Illyana went from asking questions to getting answers. She knew she should shut up or change the subject.
"Maybe it's because of the children's cries," Illyana said, half-truthfully.
"Looking at those children reminds me of myself when I was little. Being captured in Hell was so helpless."
What difference is there between here, now, and Hell?
Megan also showed a sympathetic expression and muttered, "Me too. I can't even eat when I think about those children. Many people think it's cruel, but Headmaster also arranged for Harpy to send some supplies in."
"For the future, we can only endure. So can they, Headmaster said."
There's nothing that should be gained by sacrificing children, never!
The confusion in Illyana's eyes disappeared. Perhaps she should do something. These things were dulling her sword, and leaving Hell had made her bloodthirst disappear.

The evening breeze continued to blow, carrying away the leaves from the top of the tree wall, stirring Illyana's hair, and taking away her confusion.
The fresh green leaves drifted further and further away, until they disappeared from sight, and finally slowly landed.
"Thud."
Magneto looked at the leaves at his feet, his eyes flashing, not knowing what he was thinking.
…
"Is this the one, Jimmy?"
"Wasn't this house empty before? You didn't lead us to the wrong place, Jimmy?"
Faced with the distrust of his companions, the young man named Jimmy flushed, but still tried to lower his voice and said.
"I guarantee with my reputation that people moved into this house before last week. I saw people going in and out before, but no one has come out of it since the registration."
What Jimmy didn't say was that he remembered it so clearly because he had seen that the residents of this house were two very beautiful girls.
Seeing that Jimmy's confident appearance didn't seem to be lying, everyone temporarily believed him, and then discussed who would knock on the door.
After all, there was a reward for reporting superhumans, but only if you were right. If you were wrong, the Sentinel robots wouldn't use your information next time, so even if you had money, no one dared to mess around.
